26、We all have stress sometimes. Stress comes from good or bad things that happen to us. For some people, it happens before having to speak in public, while for others, it might be because of a first date. What causes stress for you may not be stressful for someone else.
When you are stressed, you feel as though you are in danger, which speeds up your heart, makes you breathe faster, and gives you a burst (迸发) of energy.
Sometimes stress is useful. It can encourage you to get things done quickly. For example, it helps you finish an important job on time. But if stress happens too often or lasts too long, it can cause diseases and bad feelings. That’s why you need to deal with it immediately when you feel the bad results of stress. The sooner, the better.
The first step to deal with your stress is to try to find out the cause of the stress. It is usually caused by too much work, money worries, or a bad relationship. If you know the cause of your stress, pull yourself out from it or change the situation. Even if you are only able to get away for a few seconds or minutes, the break is important for it can lead to the final disappearance of stress. If you can’t find out the cause of your stress, you need to discuss your situation with your family, friends, or someone who can help. Talking with others can help you find ways to relax and calm down. Listening to music and taking exercise are also of great help.

【3】To get stress under control, what should you do first?
A.Understand the bad results of stress.
B.Look for ways to pull you out of stress.
C.Find out what is making you stressed.

【4】The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A.the cause of stress
B.the ways to control stress
C.the role of music and exercise in reducing stress
D.the importance of discussing your stress with others
【5】Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.What happens when you are under stress?
B.What can you do about stress?

27、 I wanted to be a journalist when I was 12 years old. I used to sit in front of the TV in my family’s living room, imitating what the presenters said on the morning shows. I knew one day I would move to New York City to work in television.
So when I got a job at one of the three big networks in New York at the age of 24, I was elated. This was where I had always wanted to be. I spent the next 12 years in a variety of roles at the same company. I had the perfect arrangement that most people thought - a job for life. “You're so lucky” was what I heard over and over again. And I was.
But I also started to notice cracks (裂缝) in the media world I had come to love so much. A new kind of competition cropped up in the form of social media and new digital media. News was changing. I knew I couldn't stay where I was; I must accept the change and be part of creating it. When I told my colleagues that I was thinking about leaving the network and going to work at an online start-up, I got a lot of crazy looks. “Why would you make such a risky move?” “What if it fails?” “You can’t be seriously considering this.”
I didn't listen to their advice because I knew not every good experience is defined(定义) by success or failure. Sometimes it’s about running the risk pushing the limits and having faith in an idea. What would the world be like today if we only acted when we could see the outcome?
Our new online company, Huffpost Live, has been on the air for several months and is doing amazingly well. I didn't listen when people told me to take the safe route. I’m proud that I didn't take the advice of the so-called experts and chose to make the change.
【1】What does the underlined word “elated” in Paragraph 2 mean?

【2】Why did the author leave her previous job?
A.The boredom in the media industry. B.The rapid development of new media.
C.The bad relationship with her colleagues. D.The large amount of work in the company.
【3】What can we infer about the author?
A.She had no experience of failure. B.She didn't mind what others said.
C.She acted after knowing the outcome. D.She had a better understanding of success.
【4】What did the author think of her decision?
A.She wasn't sure of that. B.She had taken great risks.
C.She felt regret about that. D.She made a right decision.
28、Although people value intelligence-understanding, reasoning, the ability to learn-they also respect wisdom, or the knowledge and experience that we gain over a lifetime. In some ways, wisdom is like beauty: we value it, we desire it, we know it when we see it, but it is nearly impossible to pin down such a quality. 【1】
1.Working at being social
Studies show that people who stay connected to others show higher levels of wisdom than those who remain alone.【2】 Next time you're at a party or gathering, single out someone who's standing alone and strike up a conversation.

Opening your mind means realizing that everyone has a life story that influences their actions. During the course of every day, make a note of the issues that bother you, and take a moment to see them from the other side.
3.Learn how to say, "I could be wrong".
A wise person understands that it is impossible to know everything and that life is capable of taking unexpected turns.【4】 Admitting that there are times when you could be mistaken will go a long way in solidifying your fame.
4.Reading the news 【5】 If you don’t already read a daily paper or news online, start by going through a single front-page article from a major respected news source.
Almost everyone has the potential to become wiser, particularly if you strengthen these habits.
A.Practice being open-Minded.
B.Sharing good news with your friends.
C.But researchers have tried-and here's what they've found.
D.Recognizing your errors can lead only to greater wisdom,
E.Make an effort to join a new club, or invite an old friend for coffee.
F.You do not have to admit your mistakes if you are really unwilling to.
G.You cannot make balanced choices unless you understand world circumstances.
29、 The belief that new technologies are causing the death of work is the idea that never goes away. Despite evidence to the contrary, we still view technological change today as being more rapid and dramatic in its consequences for work than ever before. But this is nothing new. People have always viewed the technological changes that take place during their lives as the most dramatic and dangerous that ever happened in history.
In the 1930s, the British economist(经济学家) John Maynard Keynes predicted the widespread use of electricity would produce a world where people spend most of their time doing nothing. In the United States during the 1960s, the government repeatedly investigates fears that automatic machines would permanently reduce the amount of work available. In 1988, one Australian historian claimed that at least a quarter of the workforce would be without jobs within 10 years because of computers.
Of course, none of these disasters came to pass in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, or anywhere else.
Yet today, we are seeing the return of these predictions, with some experts claiming the world of work is once more undergoing radical(激进的)and unprecedented(前所未有的) change. They argue that robots and other workplace technologies are causing a reduction in the total amount of work available, or are bringing a more rapid pace of substitution of machines for humans than has been seen previously.
But there is a little evidence to support such beliefs. Statistics show that the percentage of people in work, the number of hours they work, and how frequently they change jobs have remained remarkably constant over the past 20 years.
This stability should not come as a surprise. There are good reasons why we should not expect new technologies to cause the death of work. New technologies always cause job losses, but that is only part of the story. What also needs to be understood is how they increase the amount of work available.
One way this happens is through the increases in incomes that accompany the use of new technologies. With the introduction of these technologies, goods and services can be produced faster, which results in higher real incomes for workers. Higher incomes then increase demand for other products and consequently more workers are needed to make them. Additionally, while new technologies are likely to substitute for some types of workers, they will also increase demand for other types of workers, especially those with higher level skills and expertise.
So, the end of work is no closer today than at any time in the past. But there is still a need to keep disproving the prediction, to reduce people’s fears.
【1】What is the function of the second paragraph?
A. To explain the importance of developing new technology.
B. To show how technology affected employment in the past.
C. To argue that technological dangers are becoming more serious.
D. To give historical examples of unnecessary fear about new technology.
【2】How can employment statistics over the past 20 years best be described?
A. Confusing B. Steady
C. Reliable D. Variable
【3】According to paragraph 7, why does demand for products often increase after new technology is introduced?
A. There are more goods for people to choose from.
B. There is more demand for new skills in the economy.
C. Productivity improvements help raise workers’ salaries.
D. Higher quality goods at lower prices encourage consumption.
【4】What is the author’s opinion about the introduction of new technology?
A. It does not have an effect on most people’s jobs.
B. Its benefits are usually not worth the introduction.
C. It usually leads to a significant increase in employment.
D. Its danger to people’s employment possibilities is overstated.

33、 Working on holidays has always presented something of a class divide. From the 1870s through the 1920s, middle-and-upper-class Americans often lived with “the help”—mostly women of color whose job was to cook and clean and care for others, day and night. While shows like Dowton Abbey seek to give ________ to servants, they also sanitize (粉饰) what was a cruel, back-breaking existence. It was common for a housemaid’s day to begin well before the family rose and extend until after they ________ for the evening. They did so seven days a week: working more than 80 hours a week - more than the 65 hours most factory workers worked at the time. While we often imagine that these women were young and single, Evelyn Nakano Gleen’s research on such care providers has shown that over 30% of them were married many with children. As they worked very hard for families not ________, they left their children, parents, siblings and husbands behind. Thanksgiving or Christmas was no doubt one of the hardest times of the year, and their own families felt their ________.
The labor movement was ________ to changing this sorry state of affairs. Unions raised wages, lowered hours, instituted worker protections, guaranteed a minimum wage and ________ holidays off for workers. Those who did have to work on national holidays were guaranteed overtime pay. When unions were strong, such benefits even ________ to non-unionized workers.
But as unions have ________, part-time work has increased. And this has meant lower wages and greater ________. Working at $11 an hour for 25 hours a week means making 14,300 a year. For most retail workers, that’s one of the better jobs that are available. And ________, it’s a job without health insurance, or a retirement plan, with constant scheduling changes that make it hard to take additional ________. Most of these workers wish they could work more, but employers would rather hire other part-timers. So when the boss says, “Can you work Thanksgiving?” workers have no real choice but to be ________.
Today, working on holidays carries no guarantee of extra pay, and not working can mean losing one’s job. Some workers are ________; Walmart employees have planned over 1,000 Black Friday strikes because of unchanging wages and health care premiums (保险费) that will soon triple. Americans have a choice of helping these workers regain the ________, or walking past them in order to shop more. And that is the irony to the trend of stores opening on Thanksgiving. On the same day that we give thanks for all we have, why must we also rush out to buy more? Observers might say, “It’s just the logic of the market!” But the logic of the market is not some mystical process. It is the result of the ________ that we make.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 【1】 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.
Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 【2】.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 【3】 supporting.
The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 【4】 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 【5】.
If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 【6】 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 【7】 of all resources.
And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 【8】 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 【9】 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 【10】 human being.
35、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high【1】 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an【2】 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the【3】 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an【4】 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.
From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?
The answer is yes. The first artwork【5】 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its【6】 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.
Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.
Art is a way in which human 【7】 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 【8】 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain【9】 traits of old master paintings be called art?
For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as【10】. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.
Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.
It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Smell the flowers before you go to sleep and you may just end up with rosy dreams. Have a whiff of rotten(腐烂的)eggs during the night and your dreams may be【1】(pleasant). So says researcher Dr. Boris Stuck, 【2】invited sleeping volunteers to a rose vs. rotten egg test in the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany. The subjects didn’t dream about roses【3】eggs, but rather he found that what they smelt affected the emotions of【4】(they) dreams.
And if you think【5】(smell) have a say in dreams, wait for what TV tells us. A UK study reveals that people exposed【6】black-and-white film and TV in their youth are to have monochromic(单色的)dreams throughout their life more【7】(probable). The biggest threat posed by the covid-19 outbreak is,of course, the health risks it poses. But that is not the only risk: Avoidance, social distancing and panic may have great economic consequences, large enough to significantly slow growth, push up unemployment and ever drag the economy into a decline.
In this respect, people who suffer most are low-waged workers in low income households without paid leave. Many employers are already telling their white collar workers to work home. But low wage workers such as cleaners, food service workers and cashiers can’t work remotely. If these workers are temporarily free by specific quarantines(隔离), they won’t get paid. Their families tend to have little savings and live in a terrible state . Without work, these families face risks of intense economic hardship.
So we need a quickly effective policy that will maintain earnings for those who most depend on them. Many of these workers will be employed but temporarily free;others may lose their jobs as their employers try to manage shocks to their own business.
A better solution is for employers to continue paying workers directly during shutdowns, In most cases, employers will want the workers back once the threat of the viruses weaken, According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, about 40 percent of private company workers paid below the median lack laid leave benefits.
As this crisis unfolds, the government in the world will be forced to launch some sort of quick response to reduce the effect of the virus. The question is: Will the measures be targeted to those who need them, or will it adopt the tax-cut mode? Millions of economic despair depend on policymakers getting this right.
