二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、If you are thinking of putting your child in a private high school instead of a public one, you should do some research. You will find that most private schools offer some advantages.

One of the most important details of a good high school is small class size. Many public schools might have 30 or even 35 students in each class. However, many private schools limit the size to about 15 to 20 kids per class. This is a good thing because it allows each teacher to offer every student more attention.

Another thing to mention is the interesting classes. For example, while the typical (典型的) high school might only offer Spanish and French as foreign languages, private schools often have several other languages to choose from. This is especially important if your child is actually interested in studying a particular language that is not usually offered. Of course, many colleges also consider the various (各种各样的) classes as a good thing, since they can teach students more different subjects than usual.

Some colleges actually work closely with schools to make sure students are prepared well to get an advanced education. This means that teachers are careful to teach skills that can be used in college. Also, college teachers may be on-hand to talk to students and give them advice. If you think your child could use some help of this kind, which would likely help prepare him or her for college, you should look into schools offering these things.

A simple visit to the website or campus (校园) of a local private high school could give you the answers you are looking for. If you think your child would benefit from and appreciate these advantages, you should start researching. You are sure to find at least one that offers these benefits.

27、   These days, people who do manual (体力的) work often receive far more money than people who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as “white-collar workers” for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the honor of becoming white-collar workers. This can lead to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.

When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he left home dressed in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls (工作服) and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf’s wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another job. He will soon be working in an office. He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status (身份;地位) is well worth the loss of money. From now on, he will wear a suit all day and others will call him ‘Mr. Bloggs’, not ‘Alf’.

1What does the case of Alfred Bloggs show?

A. That people often care more about the status of a job than the income.

B. That “white-collar workers” usually wear a suit to go to work.

C. That manual workers prefer to keep their jobs a secret.

D. That office workers earn less than manual workers.

2What did Alfred Bloggs do for over two years?

A. He told his wife he worked for the Corporation, when in fact he did not.

B. He dressed himself as a dustman before leaving home every morning.

C. He lied to his wife about his job.

D. He earned twice as much as a white-collar worker.

3What does Alfred Bloggs think of his new job?

A. He feels it is a pity because he now earns less than before.

B. He thinks it is worthwhile for his rise in status.

C. He is proud because he earns much more than before.

D. He is satisfied because he no longer needs a shower before returning home.

4What’s the best title of the passage?

A. The Double Life of Alfred Bloggs.

B. Money or Status, Which Comes First?

C. The Story of Alfred Bloggs, a Dustman.

D. Truth Will Come to Light Sooner or Later.

28、Dogs are likely to have complex (复杂的) feelings such as jealousy (嫉妒) and pride, according to a new scientific research.

Dogs feel very jealous when they find that they are unfairly treated. And they do not like seeing their owners being kind to other creatures, especially other dogs. They often react negatively (消极地) when their owners bring home new pets, the research found. “Dogs show a strong dislike to unfair treatment,” Dr. Friederike Range of the Vienna University said.

At first, people believed most animals are short of the “sense of self” , which is needed to experience so-called secondary feelings such as jealousy. These are more complex than feelings such as anger or joy.

Besides dogs research, another research includes cows, horses, cats and sheep, and all the results have shown that animals have far more “sense of self” than we thought.

Dr Paul Morris, a psychologist (心理学家) at the University of Portsmouth who studies animal emotions, told The Sunday Times, “We are learning that dogs, horses, and perhaps many other species are far more emotionally complex than we ever realized. They can suffer simple forms of many emotions we once thought only primates (灵长类) could experience.”

In research among dog owners, Dr Morris found almost all of them reported jealous behavior by their pets. The dog often tried to keep their owner away from a new lover in the early days of a relationship.

Behavioral experts suggest that owners should keep a close relationship with the dog as usual when a new pet or child comes along in order to prevent jealous activity from the dog.

【1】What is true about dogs and humans according to the passage?

A.Dogs usually have more feelings than humans.

B.Dogs feel unhappy when their owners show kindness to other animals.

C.Humans are angry about their dogs’ negative feelings.

D.Dogs are often treated unfairly by humans.

29、The lack of sea ice around parts of Antarctica because of global warming may be good news for one species of penguin, a new study suggests. Surprisingly, Adelie penguins appear to prefer reduced sea-ice conditions, meaning that the species could be “a rare global warming winner”, according to a statement.

“It turns out that these penguins are happier with less sea ice,” said Yuuki Watanabe, lead researcher from Japan’s National Institute of Polar Research. “This may seem strange, but the underlying mechanism(原理)is actually quite simple.” He explained that in ice-free conditions, penguins are able to travel more by swimming than by walking. For penguins, swimming is four times faster than walking.

Researchers from Japan’s National Institute of Polar Research tied GPS trackers and video cameras to 175 penguins to track their behavior over several years. In seasons with heavy sea ice, penguins got tired as they walked to find food. But when there was less sea ice, penguins were able to dive anywhere they wanted, often just entering the water right by their nests, Watanabe said. This is more energy- and time-efficient and it expands their foraging(觅食)range, the study suggests. In fact, the researchers found that the penguins may save an average of 15% to 33% energy per trip compared with ice-covered seasons, putting that saved energy into growth and reproduction. Since climate models predict that the Antarctic will rapidly lose sea ice as the 21st century progress, the results suggest that Adelie penguins may experience a population boom in years to come.

【1】What may be the good news to Adelie penguins?

A.The reduced sea-ice conditions.

B.The reduction of ocean pollution.

C.The end of the global warming.

D.The rise in the penguin species.

【2】What makes penguins happier with rising temperature?

A.They can walk much faster.

B.They can move more freely.

C.They can find more big fish.

D.They can drink sea water easily.

【3】What will happen to the Adelie penguins if they swim more?

A.They will store more food.

B.They will become healthier.

C.They will have a larger population.

D.They will have difficulty drinking.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

A.Penguins Are Good at Swimming

B.Some Penguins Benefit from Global Warming

C.Global Warming Causes the Loss of Sea Ice

D.Researchers Discover a New Species of Penguin

In Times of Crists, We Need Classical Music

It’s still lying in front of me on my desk. The booklet, entitled Time for Outrange(愤怒) , was written by the 93-year-old French diplomat(外交官) Stephane Hessel. “The power of money,” Hessel says, filled with anger, “has never been as great and selfish and 1 as it is now.”

But what does the outrage of this Frenchman have to do with classical music and , ultimately, with me, music director of the Orchestre Symphenique de Montreal(蒙特利尔交响乐团) ?

A lot, I, too, am outraged by the direction of industrial society, with materialism and consumerism leading the way. I want to show that, because of its powerful impact, classical music can play a(n) 2 role right now.

We all sense that our society is experiencing an almost revolutionary 3. Life is getting faster, competition is fiercer and social cohesion(凝聚力) is reducing. Like most people, I have no idea how liberty and civil rights would develop in the era of globalization and ever-evolving technological advancement.

But I see this as an opportunity for a(n) 4 to classical music. The great symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are not museum pieces we should listen to only if we want to 5 ourselves with some music history. Now are they a decoration or a relaxation exercise for the quickened pace of life.

They are more than what a radio station for classical music once promised - “your oasis(绿洲) of well-being.” They are timeless compositions that 6 all the uncertainties and insecurities of this new period. They can support us in our search for meaning. Beethoven, for example, was convinced that man had the capacity to change for the better and to go throughout life. This is why there is so much hope in his music. His symphonies was mean to 7 people forward.

Classic music 8 our senses and emotions in such a way that we were thrown back onto ourselves. It 9 to listeners to make use of their own reason and reflect on their actions. Music’s sole purpose is to be experienced. That experience, in turn, is why music can change our perceptions(认知) of ourselves and thereby our interactions with others.

10 to explain this powerful impact of music will always remain unsatisfying, but this much is certain: aesthetic(审美的) experiences can transform people.
