26、Going green seems to be fad(时尚)for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.

With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.

27、   In the last few years. “bike-sharing” companies like oBike, ofo, and Mobike began flooding (挤满) streets in places like China, Japan, Australia, and Singapore with bikes. But I didn’t take long before there were too many companies and too many bikes on the streets. Soon many companies went out of business, leaving behind thousands of unused rental bikes. Many of them were completely new.

Businessman Mike Than Tun Win realized that though these bikes didn’t have any value where they were, they could do a lot of good for schoolchildren in Myanmar. Some children in Myanmar travel an hour or more on foot every day to get to school. Soon. Mr. Than Tun Win had raised around $400, 000 for the LessWalk project. About half of the money was his own, and the other half was given by companies.

The LessWalk project bought thousands of new rental bikes from failed companies and shipped them to Myanmar. Once in Myanmar, the bikes are changed to make them more useful for students. The rental bikes used to require a smartphone app to unlock them. LessWalk changed this for a lock with a key. They also added a second place to sit at the back of the bikes, allowing two children to ride to school on one bike. Recently they’ve added another change—they’re using special tires that don’t go flat to take the place of the bike’s regular tires. With all the changes, Mr. Than says each bike costs Less Walk about $35.

Giving out the bikes takes a little longer, since Less Walk wants to make sure that the bikes go to the students who need them the most. The project is working with Myanmar’s government and schools to focus on poor students who walk close to two hours a day to school.

Though Less Walk only began in March, the project has already brought around 22, 500 bikes into Myanmar and has given out over 1, 000 bikes. Mr. Than Tun Win hopes to bring in as many as 100,000 bikes and expand the program to Laos and Cambodia.

28、   Hanging stocking(长袜) by the chimney(烟囱) with care is one of the most popular Christmas traditions, but many families wonder why.

A popular origin(起源) tale starts with none other than St. Nicholas, who was thought to be the original Father Christmas. In the third and fourth centuries, St. Nicholas was a Christian bishop in modern-day Turkey who made helping others his life purpose, and he caught wind of a family in need.

As the story goes, a single father was raising three daughters but realized he didn’t have enough money to pay for their dowries(嫁妆), without which they couldn’t get married. As a poor man, the father wouldn’t be able to support his daughters for long.

St. Nicholas heard of the family’s trouble but knew they were too proud to accept handouts. To make sure they didn’t refuse his generosity(慷慨), he anonymously sent them gold at night. Some people say he dropped gold down the chimney, and the gifts landed in the stockings that were laid by the fire to dry, while others say St. Nicholas himself climbed down from the chimney. Someone --- either the father or the daughters, depending on the tale--- caught St. Nicholas in the act and thanked him for his help. The gifts were enough for the daughters to marry and live happily ever after.

St. Nicholas’ feast day was on December 6, and finally, the tradition of leaving gifts in stockings was paired up with Christmas celebrations.

Some other scientists say the stocking tradition might have started even before Christianity in Scandinavian cultures. The Norse god Odin was said to come during Yule, riding on an eight-legged horse. Children would leave sugar and carrots in their shoes to feed the horse, and Odin would leave them gifts in return.

We’ll never know for sure the true origin of the stocking tradition, but stockings have a strong foothold in Christmas tradition. The gift-giving origins show generosity and kindness as long as you’re on St. Nicholas’ nice list, of course.

29、   Nzulezo in Jomoro district of western Ghana has coexisted with nature for many centuries. Here, all of life’s chores (家常杂务) from the preparation of meals to children going to school take place on water.

The first people in Nzulezo came from Mali in the 15th century. Many centuries after, people in Nzulezo still live in wooden buildings. Though there are glaring challenges, some of Cudjoe’s students have left Nzulezo for further education, including university, and they are thriving, he says. “I have a lady, she’s now a nurse, and I have a man who is now in university. Plenty of them are now in senior high outside the village. They are doing well.”

But while people in Nzulezo are open to satisfying some modern needs, they still feel strongly about keeping their traditional lifestyle. “Our life here is very comfortable for us. We cook here, we enjoy ourselves, we entertain ourselves, the children also. We prefer to stay,” says a local elder, John Arthur.
