二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   Although the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have English as an official language, the United States does not have an official language. This is how it’s possible to become a US citizen without speaking English. Canada also has French as an official language, though it is mostly spoken in the province of Quebec. Because many of the English speakers who originally inhabited (居住) Canada came from the US, there is little difference in the American and Canadian dialects of English. Similarly, Australian and New Zealand English have few differences, except Australia was originally settled as a penal colony (流放地) and New Zealand was not.

British colonialism has spread English all over the world, and it still holds prestige (影响力) in South Africa, India, and Singapore, among other nations. In South Africa, English became an official language, along with Afrikaans and 9 African languages, in the 1996 constitution (宪法). However, only 3% of the country’s 30 million people are native English speakers. Twenty percent are descendants (后代) of Dutch farmers who speak Afrikaans, and the rest are native Africans.

India became independent from Britain in 1947, and the English language was supposed to be phased out (淘汰) by 1965. However, today English and Hindi are the official languages. Indian English is characterized (具有的特征) by treating mass nouns as count nouns, frequent use of the “isn’t it?” tag, use of more compounds, and a different use of prepositions. In Singapore, Chinese, Malay and Indian languages have an effect on the form of English spoken. Everyone is taught English in the school system, but there are a few differences from British English as well. Mass nouns are treated as count nouns, “use to” means usually, and no articles (冠词) are used before occupations (职业).

1Why can people become a US citizen without speaking English?

A.Different languages are spoken in the US.

B.The US doesn’t have an official language.

C.They can speak their own language there.

D.They can learn English there.

2Compared with Australian English, the English spoken by New Zealanders   .

A.is closer to American English B.is a kind of old English

C.is very similar in many ways D.is different from British English

3What do we know about South Africa?

A.It has 11 different official languages.

B.English is its only official language.

C.20 percent of its people are native English speakers.

D.English is becoming less important there.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The Indians are poor with English grammar.

B.Singaporean English is similar to Indian English.

C.People in Singapore tend to misuse count nouns.

D.English is a required subject in Singaporean schools.

27、   Children grow quickly, especially their feet. But many families cannot afford new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot(赤脚的). Those children risk picking up diseases from the soil. An American man may have a solution for those barefoot kids—a shoe that grows with the child.

Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it’s able to last so long. “It grows in three places; the front, on the side, and on the back. It can last up to five years. The bottom is like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather.”

The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14.

Lee got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in Kenya. However, it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office, he kept a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise.

Because International works with several partner organizations. Together, they’re sent more than 50,000 pairs of shoes to 70 countries. Most are going to East Africa. And then also a lot of shoes go to Haiti, some of the Central American countries as well. Many of these areas do not have good sanitation(卫生设备), and illness spreads easily.

A pair of shoes, he says, gives more than protection. It gives a child self-worth and more chances to succeed. Because it’s a small thing that really makes a big difference to keen them healthy and happy and having more chances to succeed. Kenton Lee adds that his goal is to help get The Shoe That Grows to as many children as he can around the world.

1Why are so many children around the world barefoot?

A.They grow so quickly that their families can’t buy proper shoes.

B.Their families are too poor to buy them enough new shoes.

C.They don’t like wearing new shoes.

D.There are no shoes at all now.

2We can know from the text that ________.

A.the shoes are designed for adults.

B.the shoes just grow in two places

D.Because International was founded to make much money

3Kenton Lee kept a pair of his own shoes in the office to ________.

C.a small thing can really make a big difference

D.the shoes can make children succeed easily

31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Scientists have proved what students have long suspected: Maths equations can actually trigger physical pain.

Regions of the brain linked with the experience of physical 1 were activated in those fearful of maths when they were presented with a tough equation, researchers have found. The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more it 2 activity in regions of their brain associated with visceral (内脏的) threat detection, and often the experience of pain itself.

However, the researchers say their study examines the pain response associated with anticipating an anxiety-provoking event, rather than the pain associated with a 3 event itself. A maths task itself is not painful but 4 the thought of it is highly unpleasant to certain people.

“Maths can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMAs), math is associated with tension, apprehension (忧虑) and fear,” the researchers said in their paper titled. When Math Hurts. “5, this relation was not seen during math performance, 6 that it is not that math itself hurts, rather, the anticipation of math is painful. These results may also provide a potential neural mechanism to explain why (people with) HMAs tend to 7 math and math-related situations, which in turn can bias (使有偏见) (those with) high levels of mathematics-anxiety away from taking math classes or even entire math-related 8 paths. We provide the first neural 9 indicating the nature of the subjective experience of math-anxiety.

Other forms of psychological stress, such as social 10 or a traumatic break-up, can also elicit feeling of physical pain.”
