21、Growing up in Philadelphia, Lieberman started cooking with his dad when he was seven. His family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying local food in France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties, single-handedly cooking while making drinks for many friends. Just for fun, he and some friends decided to tape a show about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing his classmates how to do things like making drinks. That helped the show become very popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the show were passed around, and then his name went to the Food Network.
Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says Lieberman’s charisma(号召力) is a key. “Food TV isn’t about food anymore,” says Flay. “It’s about your personality (个性) and finding a way to keep people’s eyeballs on your show.”
But Lieberman isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show, Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. An airline company was looking for someone to make tasteful, cheap and easy-to-make food to serve on its flights. Lieberman got the job.

22、When I was looking for a Christmas present for my daughter in a toy store, a nicely dressed little girl, with some money in her little hand, was looking at some beautiful dolls. When she saw a doll she liked, she would ask her father if she had enough money. He usually said yes.
At the same time, a boy, with old and small clothes, was looking at some video games. He, too, had money in his hand, but it looked no more than five dollars. Each time he picked up one of the video games and looked at his father, he shook his head.
The little girl had chosen her doll, a very beautiful one. However, she noticed the boy and his father. She saw the boy give up a video game with disappointment (失望) and walk to another corner of the store.
The little girl put her doll back to the shelf and ran over to the video game. After she talked to her father, she paid for the video game and whispered (耳语) to the shop assistant.
So the boy got the video game that he wanted for free-he was told it was a prize from the store. He smiled happily, although he felt it was so incredible.
The girl saw all this happen. She smiled, too.
When I walked out of the store to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I would never forget their short talk. “Daddy, didn’t Grandma want me to buy something that would make me happy?”
He said, “Of course, she did.”
“Well, I just did!” With that, the little girl started skipping (蹦跳) towards their car happily.

23、Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents. However, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

I was busy. I wanted to say no, but I saw that their shoes had holes in them and they were wet. “Come in and I’ll make you a cup of tea.” They came in, saying nothing. Their shoes left prints (脚印) on the floor. I gave them tea and bread to protect them against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started my housework again.
The silence in the living room surprised me. I looked in. The woman held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The man asked me in a low voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
Am I rich? Oh, no! I looked at my old things in my room. The woman put her cup back in its saucer (茶碟) carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.”
Then they left, holding their papers against the wind. They didn’t say thank you. They didn’t need to. They had done more than that. They had reminded me that I had so much to thank for. The blue cups and saucers were simple. But they matched. The potatoes and meat before me, a roof over my head, my husband with a job—these things matched too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The prints of their shoes were still wet on my floor. I let them there. I didn’t clear them from the floor. I wanted them there to remind me how rich I was.
