二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Would a faster reading speed mean that we could learn more? Some people claim that it’s possible. In July last year, the six-time speed reading champion Anne Jones sat down to read Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman. Just 25 minutes and 31 seconds later, she finished it — which equals a reading rate of around 3,700 words per minute. Jones runs training courses teaching speed reading, recall and concentration techniques and there are numerous speed reading apps that have appeared on the market over the past few years. But do they actually work?

First, we need to understand how we read. The human eye movement system is central to our reading ability. Read over that sentence again, and think about how your eyes scan across the words. They don’t move smoothly over them. Instead, they make a series of short, sharp jumps, skipping over a few characters before briefly landing on a word. The movements are known as saccades (扫视) and the pauses are called fixations.

Reading isn’t just about seeing the words — you need to comprehend them to build up a picture about what the text means. People are able to get through a block of text faster, but at the cost of accuracy and understanding. In other words, if you use a speed reading app, then you’ll probably get the gist (主旨) of a piece of text, but you’ll struggle to recall details about what you’ve just read.

So, does speed reading work? Well, yes and no. It really depends on what you’re reading and why you need to read it. As yet, there isn’t a trick that enables you to read a piece of text both quickly and accurately — there’s always going to be a trade-off.

1What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Speed reading is bad at times.

B.Speed reading is a waste of time.

C.Speed reading can work sometimes.

D.Speed reading is always enjoyable.

2What can we know from the passage?

A.Reading apps ensure we read much faster.

B.Fast reading makes us learn more knowledge.

C.Reading is no more than seeing the text words.

D.Reading ability is related to the eye movement system.

3What does the underlined word “trade-off” most probably mean in the last paragraph?

A.Balance. B.Change. C.Business. D.Bargain.

4What might the writer continue to talk about?

A.The advantages of faster or slower reading.

B.The reasons why to do faster or slower reading.

C.The cases where to do faster and slower reading.

D.The methods for making use of faster or slower reading.

22、Wildfires have captured headlines around the globe in recent years. These intense and widespread fires worry scientists. Besides causing billions of dollars in property damage, wildfires can erase the habitat of valued wildlife. They also fill the air with choking pollution. And when they burn near cities, they put the lives of whole communities in danger.

But scientists are interested in these fires for another reason. The black carbon-rich smoke from their flames is made of the ash from burned trees, grass and shrubs. The intense heat of some wildfires can cast this ash to high altitudes and it can travel around the globe. And the warming sunlight absorbed by dark particles(微粒)at high altitudes won't reach Earth's surface.

Scientists refer to those tiny particles of ash, dust and more as aerosols(气溶胶). One important trait is how well they reflect light. Snow and white ice reflect the most light. Dark things absorb the sun's light, mostly as heat. So the color of aerosols is important. Those aerosols can either warm or cool the air. Overall, researches showed that smoke aerosols cool the atmosphere. As intense fires cause dark ash aerosols high into the air, they mix with clouds and mostly prevent the sun's energy entering the earth.

The warming climate that can lead to wildfires may experience a temporary cooling when serious wildfires do erupt. Meanwhile, fire aerosols also can have bad effects when they fall back to Earth. And that fallout can sometimes be up to half a world away from where a fire took place.

Many studies show that intense wildfires are becoming more common, partly because of global warming. As the planet warms and new fires occur, scientists will continue to explore the big impact of tiny fire aerosols that temporarily occupy our atmosphere.

23、   My sister and I were taught at a very early age to write thank-you letters for birthday and Christmas gifts. We carefully copied addresses from our mom’s address book into our own pretty little books, and a new box of stationery(信箋,信封)was always among my gifts under the tree. We wrote our letters on December 26 at the latest every year. It was an important tradition in our home, and it has turned me into an avid(热情)thank-you-letter writer as an adult.

I still send a great deal of personal mail, and I am extremely interested in all of the trappings of letter writing: unique stamps, beautiful stationery, fountain pens(自来水笔). I feel a mad rush of satisfaction sticking a stamp on a carefully penned thank-you letter and sending it off in the mail.

Several years ago, I even sent my mom a thank-you letter to thank her for teaching me to count my blessings on paper. Sending letters of thanks out into the world has made me more grateful for the love, support and kindness I receive daily.

My father died when I was twenty-seven. Even then, I found comfort in writing letters of thanks for the gifts of words I received. At a time when all I wanted to do was retreat(退缩)into my own sadness, the act of giving thanks forced me to stay connected to the world and to the lives of the living.

And while it may seem unimportant, my belief in well-written thank-you letters has protected my popularity. Since real thank-you letters are extremely few and far between, my social graces(风度)are considered as a charming difference from other people, and my friends and family always seem truly moved by my efforts.

1What can we learn about the author’s family?

A.Her family liked to collect stationery.

B.Her family had a thank-you-letter writing tradition.

C.She often copied addresses for her mother.

D.They wrote thank-you letters on Dec 26.

2How did the author feel when writing thank-you letters?

A.Satisfied. B.Tired. C.Excited. D.Bored.

3What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?

A.The author felt happy to receive gifts from others.

B.The author’s father died when she was very young.

C.Writing thank-you letters made the author lead an active life.

D.Writing thank-you letters forced the author to talk with others.

4What does the author intend to tell us?

A.Expressing thanks can protect what we have.

B.Receiving thank-you letters is truly moving.

C.Writing thank-you letters is difficult work.

D.Being grateful can help gain the respect.

24、Roberto Novo has styled the hair of a lot of stars. But during COVID-19, he’s turned his gifts to the heads of lesser-known, older New Yorkers- and he’s done it for free.

The Argentina-born stylist welcomes them to his Manhattan apartment or visits them in their homes. His two dogs keep everyone company. He calls his project “Free haircut and puppy love.”

It started last summer when he and his dogs visited a client who had been isolated (隔离) for months due to COVID-19. Seeing how happy it made her, he asked if she had friends in her apartment building who might be interested in a free hairdo.

“It doesn’t get any better than that — bring some joy to senior citizens in these hard times,” Novo said. “People are really suffering in this situation right now. So if I can help them with a simple haircut, that’s a gift.”

On a recent day, Novo and his dogs walked into Madelon Spier’s apartment and quickly turned the living room into a salon (美发厅). Sitting in a black chair, Spier waited to get her hair styled. “I think he’s an amazing artist. And we’re all pictures that he’s painting,” Spier said. “There’s his personality (特色), and his way of cutting — a way of looking at a person and knowing what’s right for them,” said Spier.

Neighbor Andrew Langerman said Novo also gave him his first haircut in months. “I’ve just been so lonely during COVID-19,” he said, and now, “I feel a lot better. I wasn’t really feeling very well when I came here but then I felt great just being with everybody. And I had a good haircut.”

As Novo finished a cut, he ordered pizzas that the group later shared. They talked and laughed.

“I always tell people if I die and I’m born again, I’ll do everything exactly the same way,” said Novo.

【1】Why did Novo visit older New Yorkers?

A.To take care of them.

B.To give them haircuts.

C.To communicate with them easily.

D.To inspire them to fight against diseases.

【2】What did Langerman say about Novo’s visit?

A.It created good feelings.

B.It strengthened his family ties.

C.It excited his interest in painting.

D.It helped him get to know his neighbors.

【3】How would Novo feel about what he did for the old?

A.It is challenging.

B.It is unexpected.

C.It is amusing.

D.It is beautiful.

【4】Which of the following can best describe Novo?

A.Generous and sporty.

B.Creative and courageous.

25、Nature Therapy

We need the tonic of wildness... At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.

—Thoreau

One major difference between our current lifestyle and those of our evolutionary past is an increasing _________ from natural settings with increased urbanization. But does this change have a major impact on our mental health? ________ , a remedy for ill health or low spirits, if the means were available, would be to send someone to the quiet of the country or seashore and away from the bustle of city. The popularity of vacations to beautiful national parks, camping, outward bound, and even breaks for a picturesque walk in a ________ greenspace to clear the mind would speak to some empirical(经验主义)________ that nature does soothe the savage beast. And recently, scientists have been studying the idea of nature therapy with a bit more seriousness than a dashed-off prescription (处方)for a ________.

We are now far _________ from the natural world of our ancestors.... more than 50% of people live in urban areas (increasing to >70% by 2050) increased urbanization is associated with increased levels of mental illness, particularly anxiety and depression. Growing up in a setting correlates with a _________ severe stress response, and exposure to greenspace _________ correlates to a positive effect on well-being in a large two-decade study. Images and sounds of a natural environment can decrease stress in people exposed to negative stimuli. A large survey of mental health and neighborhood greenspace in Wisconsin showed significant correlation between the _________ of nature and lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. There are many studies showing a similar relationships between nature exposure, relaxation, and well-being. But how does exposure to green space help us relax and ________, exactly?

Dr. Gregory Bratman’s group at Stanford has published a couple of papers following a small group of healthy volunteers told to for a 5 kilometer walk in the San Francisco Bay area. Half walked along a busy street while the other half went for a/an ________ walk with beautiful views of the mountains and the bay. The nature walk compared to walk along a busy street. Later, the same researchers did MRIs and measured blood flow in brain areas of healthy people who went on a 90 minute walk in the same urban vs. more natural setting. They found that the nature walkers had ________ activity in a particular brain region, the subgenual prefrontal cortex. This area of the brain is associated with rumination, or worrying on the same issues over and over, a problem described often in depressive and anxiety disorders.

So there we have it in a world and environment where our brains are working overtime and we think and ________ ideas and worry, exposure to nature seems to get us out of our heads, with likely positive longitudinal benefits. In the hyper-urban world to come, designing accessible, safe _________ may help the mental health of the population, and preserving our natural landscapes to be enjoyed by our descendants will continue to be a national must. ________, a prescription for a nice weekend hike could have some real measurable brain benefits.
