22、Todd Endris was surfing when a 15-foot shark hit him three times, but thanks to a couple of dolphins and a friend he survived.
The attack occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 28, just before 11 a.m. at Marina State Park off Monterey, Calif, where 24-year-old Todd Endris had gone with friends for a day of the sport they love.
“It came out of nowhere. There’s no warning at all. It was just a giant shark,” Endris said. The shark hit him fast as Endris was sitting on his surfboard. “The second time, he came down and clamped on my body --- sandwiched my board and my body in his mouth,” Endris said.
That attack wounded his back seriously. The third time, the shark tried to swallow Endris’ right leg.
The dolphins, which had been swimming freely in the surf all along, showed up then. They circled him, keeping the shark at bay, and enabled Endris to get back on his board and catch a wave to the shore.
His friend, Brian Simpson, is an X-ray technician in a hospital. He had seen Endris coming in and knew he was hurt. Blood was pumping out of the leg, which had been bitten to the bone, and Endris, who lost half his blood, became very pale. To stop the blood loss, Simpson used his surf leash(挽绳)as a tourniquet(绷带)which probably saved his life.
“Thanks to this guy,” Endris said, referring to Simpson, “once I got to the beach, he was calming me down and keeping me from losing more blood by telling me to slow my breathing and really just be calm. They wouldn’t let me look at my wounds at all, which really helped.”
Seven weeks later, he was well enough to go surfing again, and the place he went to was in the same spot where he almost lost his life. It wasn’t easy to go back in the water.
“You really have to face your fears,” he told a reporter from New York Times. “I’m a surfer at heart, and that’s not something I can give up easily. It was hard. But it was something you have to do.”

23、Name: Sam Champion
Hot job: TV Weatherman
Where: WABC-TV, New York City
When you were a child, did you plan to forecast wind, rain, and snow on TV?
I want to be a foreign journalist. I took courses in weather science at Eastern Kentucky University, but I majored in broadcasting news.
How did you finally become a weatherman?
My first job in the early 80’s was at the local TV station in Paducah, Kentucky. I did everything from turning on the lights in the morning to writing and delivering morning news. I put together weather forecasts, and become interested in them.
Back then, how did you forecast weather?
Independent companies collected computer information that showed, for example, how a single weather system might split into snow or snow mixed with rain. The information was often opposite and the job of a weather man was to study the information and make the best educated guess about the storm.
Has weather forecasting changed much with new technology?
Advanced computers, satellites, and Doppler radar(sound waves used to track storms) have made forecasting more exact. But we still know very little about how weather is shaped. So far, we just have theories.
Any advice for children who’d like to become weather scientists?
To me, weather is the most exciting field in the world. There are still so many more questions about weather than answers. After all, if we can’t foresee floods or hurricanes, how safe a society are we? Weather forecasting is wide open for scientists who love to solve puzzling problems. The next generation of meteorologists will unlock many of Earth science, and study meteorology in college.
Thanks, Sam

24、As city officials argue under the pressure to reduce urban violence, residents in some of the most violent neighborhoods in the U.S. have chosen instead to pull up a chair, and have a sit down. One such movement has been the 21 Days of Peace event in Minneapolis, a place where sometimes 11 violent crimes were seen a month. Here, community members are simply seating themselves in lawn chairs on street comers in the most dangerous neighborhoods, and acting as Violence interrupters—and police statistics show it's working. Compared to last summer, in June 2021 violent crime numbers took a dive during the 21 Days of Peace, and continued to stay low in the following months.
“Our group asked the Minneapolis Police Department to identify the most dangerous spots in our neighborhood, and then we went there, pulled out our chairs and sat down,” write Louis King and Jeny McAfee in the Washington Post, both being part of this new wave of violence interrupters.
Similar movements of violence interruption have broken out with success in Nashville, where similar groups are working through community outreach to rebuild trust and therefore decrease crime by 40%, while arrests dropped sharply.
“We thought that was going to make it safer, and what we ended up doing was breaking down trust in those communities,” said police Jason Picanzo. Now, he says, it is the community that has made these neighborhoods safer. Violence of any kind, whether it involves us or not, is a difficult situation to risk being caught up in, but desperate times also call on our “better angels”—and these Minnesotans are stretching their wings.
【1】Why is the 21 Days of Peace event carried out?
A.To create crime-free communities.
B.To reduce violent crimes in cities.
C.To place more chairs on street comers.
D.To admit more violence interrupters.
【2】What does the underlined phrase “took a dive” in Para 2 mean?
A.Decreased significantly.
B.Rose immediately.
C.Changed unbelievably.
D.Swam freely.
【3】What can be learned about the violence interruption movements?
A.Nashville has suffered failure.
B.Previous measures remain effective.
C.Jason has made great contributions.
D.The community has played a key role.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Violence Interrupters: Our True Heroes
B.Neighborhood Safety Is of Urgency
C.More Lawn Chairs, Less Violent Crimes
D.Better Angels Are Stretching Their Wings

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When I was eleven years old,I had a big accident.I get scared even now when I think about that time.I went skating near my house. There were many people, and I saw them falling on the ice.
It was my first time to go ice skating,so I was nervous.I was wondering how to skate.I went with a friend who was very skillful. He spent some time teaching me how to skate, but I didn’t learn much.He left me and skated all around. As soon as he left,I fell down.I envied other people because they could skate very well.
I was bored because I kept falling so I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold and my hands were frozen.
Suddenly,I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it? It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped there,I sank under the ice.I thought that I was going to die,but I did my best to grab something to get out from under the ice.I tried to grab the edge of the ice.But it was very difficult for an eleven year old.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me.He grabbed my arms and pulled me up.So,I lived and I’m still alive today.
I thanked him.At that time,my friend came back.I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of me,but he didn’t.He was embarrassed. When I took a taxi home, the taxi driver was surprised and asked what had happened.I didn’t want to say anything because I was tired and scared.Even now, whenever I think about that time,I feel uncomfortable.I don’t want to go skating again even now.
