21、   The first Earth Day took place on April 22,1970. Twenty million Americans, about 10% of the US’s population then, demonstrated(示威) against the widespread attitude at the time of ignoring environmental issues. Now, 50 years later, Earth Day remains an important event to draw attention to necessary actions to protect the planet. Unfortunately, threats to the environment also continue, including at least one that certainly wasn’t as apparent in 1970.

The first Earth Day, notes EDN (Earth Day Network, the global organizer of Earth Day), caused a wave of action, including the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States such as the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts, as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many countries soon adopted similar laws, it adds.

Today, EDN works with more than 75,000 partners in over 190 countries. The theme of 2020 Earth Day is climate action. Thanks to groups like EDN, public awareness and demands for better environmental management have grown dramatically and prompted great progress is many areas.

One problem that hadn’t surfaced much in 1970- the harm of unwanted plastics -has become a major environmental issue. It is drawing increasing attention and is stimulating efforts both to find productive uses for the waste materials and to develop more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Among the recent coronavirus global pandemic (流行病), EDN marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with the first Digital Earth Day, a global digital mobilization (动员) on April 22 to address the most urgent threats to people and the planet.

“At Earth Day Network, health and safety of volunteers and participants in Earth Day events are our top concern. Among the recent outbreak, we encourage people to rise up but to do so safely and responsibly-in many cases, that means using our voices to drive action online rather than in person,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network.

A.The environmental pollution wasn’t obvious in 1970.

B.People have managed to prevent the planet from being polluted.

2What is the purpose of the Earth Day Network?

C.To promote public environmental awareness.

D.To improve health and safety of the public.

3What can we learn from the Earth Day Network?

A.The first Earth Day caused many countries to make laws to protect he earth.

B.The Earth Day Network has cooperated with 75, 000 partners in America.

C.EDN called on people to take part in person during the recent outbreak.

D.People showed concern about their health and safety in Earth Day events.

4Which word best describes the author’s attitude to EDN?

A.Doubtful B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Conservative.

22、I wonder if I'm getting to be transparent. I can see waiters, but they can't see me. Ticket agents look right through me at the person next in line. I have the same feeling when I try to catch the attention of salesgirls, taxi drivers and my wife.

I'm substantial enough, maybe a little too substantial in places. And there's an undeniable air of authority about the way I stride (阔步) into a restaurant, pull my neck tie into place and signal the headwaiter. The headwaiter's glance sweeps my way, then comes to rest on a section of flowered wallpaper directly behind me. He considers it for a moment, and looks away. Five minutes later I manage to catch his eye. He strides in my direction, takes a menu from the pile at my elbow (肘) and walks back across the room. Another 10 minutes pass, and our eyes meet head-on. His face lights and he hurries toward me, saying to the couple right beside me: "This way, please."

Maybe I could arouse interest by pulling off the tablecloth. Maybe the best plan is to get up and start out of the restaurant without paying---a trick which never fails to earn me the whole attention of every waiter in the place.

On the other hand, people have no trouble making me out when I don't want them to. I never can avoid a friend who's been having a little bad luck lately and who would like to borrow some money. I'll spot him half a block away, and cross the street to the other side. He crosses at the same time. I stop and stare at a store window until he has passed, but his eye encounters mine in the reflection of the glass. I lend him the money, but from the moment on he can't see me.

【1】What can we learn about the author from paragraphs 2 and 3?

In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a “gap year,” a year off between high school and college. This idea never gained a big following in America.Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing, though there are no official numbers.

Charles Deacon,Dean of Admissions at Georgetown University in Washington,D.C.,estimates that in the current first-year class of 1,600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off.He says this number hasn’t changed much over the years.

Mr.Deacon says the most common reason for taking a “gap year” is to have a chance to travel, but he says international students may take a “gap year” to meet requirements at home for military duty.

Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education, but it can also give students a chance to explore their interests.Students hoping to be doctors, for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering in a hospital.

Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission.Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy.

The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its Web site called “Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation.” It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experiences outside the pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time.

Of course,a gap year is not for everyone.Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college, and parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off.Another concern is money.A year off, away from home, can be costly.

Holly Bull’s job is to specialize in helping students plan their gap year. She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability of information on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off,and she points out that many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.

A.2   B.3   C.4   D.5.

A.every student must take a“gap year”before applying for a famous university

B.some famous universities encourage students to gain more life experiences

D.the stress of studies does harm to the students’ health

B.Books and media have contributed to the students’ interest in school learning.

C.Parents might disagree with the program, concerned about their children’s future.

D.Experts agree taking a year off will benefit the students emotionally and physically.

24、 Culture is one of the most challenging elements of the international marketplace. This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by set of dynamic variables: language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics, technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience.

The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn cultureone has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald’s. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging.

The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant; the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia or even blindness.

Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue(税收) overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know your adversary, know your audience, and know your customer.

【1】According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. All international managers can learn culture.

B. Business diversity is not necessary.

B. who have connections to more than one type of culture.

C. who want to travel abroad.

D. who want to run business on International Sale

【4】 According to Fortune, successful international companies___________ .
