二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、Going green is good for business. Consumers are often willing to pay more for eco-friendly products than other comparable products on the market. But not all environmental claims are created equally. “Greenwashing” is a form of misinformation often used to entice a green consumer. Companies promising to be environmentally conscious sometimes fail to meet the promises they make to consumers.

For example, a large retailer might launch a new line of products, such as jeans, that uses less water and therefore theoretically has less of an environmental impact than the other clothes the company sells. But that same company might ignore water usage in the rest of their products lines or do nothing to address their other products that might be harming the environment.

Is it possible to avoid falling victim to greenwashing? Learning about greenwashing and how it works is the most effective way for consumers to avoid giving their money to companies making false claims, according to a recent study. The researchers found people who received information on greenwashing ahead of time were more likely to question whether what the company did in fact benefited the environment.

In the meantime, experts have tips for how consumers can spot potential greenwashing. “You see a lot of products that use words like ‘sustainable’, and ‘better for the planet’ with pictures that make it look like it’s green,” says Todd Larsen, the director of Green America, a nonprofit aimed at helping consumers identify greenwashing. He recommends looking for descriptions that outline specifically how a product is green.

Another tip he offers is to shop small. “When in doubt, go smaller,” says Larsen. “Rethink shopping habits. The most sustainable thing you can do as a consumer is wear the things you have more.”

【1】What does the underlined word “entice” probably mean in paragraph 1?

A.Trick.

B.Inspire.

C.Restrict.

D.Protect.

【2】What can we learn from the example in paragraph 2?

A.Using less water is a required standard of producing jeans.

B.Large retailers are more aware of environmental protection.

C.Companies with environmental consciousness run smoothly.

D.Businesses claiming to be sustainable may mislead consumers.

【3】What can be inferred from the research findings?

A.Greenwashing is a new way to cheat people.

B.People are getting fed up with greenwashing.

C.Knowing about greenwashing helps identify the truth.

D.Consumers have the ability to distinguish false claims.

【4】What does Todd Larsen suggest people do?

A.Develop sensible shopping habits.

B.Look for pictures which look green.

C.Buy more clothes green for the planet.

D.Provide specific descriptions of products.

27、It’s one of the ultimate tests of willpower: you’ve been wandering around the market for hours and you’re tired and hungry. Then you catch a smell of something fragrant (香的) and delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening. Junk food companies are well aware that the smell of their product sets off a desire in your brain and that you’ll pay for that later. It is a response that has been researched, and you’d better believe your favorite fast-food chains have marketing teams that are using that research to their advantage.

Let’s take a closer look at this process. Have you ever noticed that whatever indulgent food (放纵型食品) catches your attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it? A couple of minutes later you are standing in line, and it isn’t quite inviting as it was just moments ago, but now you’ve invested time, so you trust your first feeling to treat yourself.

But a recent statement says that this is actually the right moment to walk away. Dipayan Biswas, a marketing professor, found there is a direct connection between how long a person is exposed to indulgent food smells and choosing healthier foods. “The results of a series of experiments show that extended exposure of more than two minutes to junk food smells leads to fewer purchases of unhealthy foods compared with no smell or a non-junk-food-related smell,” reads the summary of his study.

What appears to be going on here is that the brain doesn’t necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell and a pleasant taste. “Extended exposure to an indulgent food smell brings pleasure in the mind, which in turn reduces the desire for actual consumption of indulgent foods,” he explains. So next time you feel you don’t have the willpower to resist cookies, smell all that sweetness for just a minute or two. To your brain it’s the same as actually eating cookies, and the purchase desire would decrease.

【1】What can we learn about junk food smells from the first paragraph?

A.They can make a difference in marketing.

B.They hardly affect people’s food choices.

C.They are unlikely to fool wise customers.

D.They finally decrease people’s purchase desire.

【2】What does the second paragraph basically serve as?

A.An argument.

B.An example.

C.A comparison.

D.A comment.

【3】Which statement will Biswas probably agree with?

A.The brain can’t tell where sensory pleasure is from.

B.The senses of taste and smell are closely linked.

C.The influence of food smells changes over time.

D.The behavior of smelling food doesn’t equal eating it.

【4】Which of the following could the best title for the text?

A.Train Your Brain to Resist Junk Food

B.Watch Out for Tricky Marketing Tools

C.Food Addiction Is Never About Willpower

D.Smelling Junk Food Longer Can Keep You Off It

28、Johannes Gutenberg--the ploneer of the printing press

Johannes Gutenberg was chosen to be the most important figure of the past millennium(千年) by the media(媒体). You may not be familiar with him.1Gutenberg is praised for having invented the printing press and therefore preparing the way for printing books.

He was born into a wealthy family in the city of Mainz, Germany. His early training was in goldsmithing. In 1428, he moved to Strasbourg and lived there for almost 20 years.2Gutenberg used his skills in metalwork for the mass(大批量) production of books.3That means that each copy of the Catholic bible(圣经) and all of its 73 books were painstakingly handwritten by men. Gutenberg fashioned a font(字体) of over 300 characters, far larger than the fonts of today. To make this possible, he invented the variable-width mold(模具) and perfected the mixture of materials used by type factories up to the present century.

4The between 1450 and 1455,while preparing to produce a large Latin Bible, Gutenberg is thought to have printed a number of smaller books, a calendar, and a papal Letter of Indulgence. The Bible of 42 Lines, the oldest surviving printed book in the Western world, was completed by August 15,1456.

The invention of the modem printing press changed the way information was delivered.5Even today in the computer age, we rely heavily on the printed word or text for instruction, information, and for the pleasure of reading literature.

29、Reading poetry can be challenging, but learning how to carefully move through a poem is also very rewarding. 【1】 However, by following the tips below, anyone can have the deeply rewarding experience of connecting to a great poem.

Feel various sounds. Poetry is made to be heard. You’re probably familiar with rhyming poems but there are many sound elements that poets use not only to make the poem sound beautiful, but to enhance the meaning or intention of a poem. 【2】 What do you notice about how it sounds? How does the sound enhance an overall theme, mood, or message?

【3】 Many poems may use words or reference places or times in history that may be unfamiliar to you. Be curious enough to look up all the words and references by various means. You should also gather information about the poet and his life background. All of these can offer essential context to bring the poem to life.

Analyze the figurative (比喻的) language in the poem. Figurative language could be words that are repeated often in the poem or words that rhyme in each stanza (节). To get more into the figurative meaning of the poem, you should look at how the poet uses literary methods like metaphor (隐喻), simile, and imagery. 【4】

Finally, you don’t have to fully understand it. If you like the way a poem sounds when you read it aloud, but don’t know what it “means”, that’s OK! 【5】 The great thing about art is that it can have lots of different meanings or seemingly no meaning at all and can sill be enjoyed. The same goes for poetry.

C.They are often used to add deeper meaning to the poem.

D.Maybe it makes sense in a way that you can’t necessarily express.

E.Once you find a poem that interests you, read it out loud several times.

F.You should also pay attention to how the poet opens and closes the poem.

G.Unlike painting and music, poetry requires much extra effort to harvest its full effects.

三、完形填空(共1题,共 5分)

30、   “We didn’t really find a good role model of any country doing things sustainably,” says Daniel O’Neill at the University of Leeds, UK. “We need to do things in a completely different way if we are to have any hope of achieving a good life for all people on the planet.”

O’Neill and his colleagues _______ each country’s sustainability by adding up how it used, produced or affected seven things. These were water, phosphorus, nitrogen, carbon dioxide emissions, landuse change, ecological footprint and material consumption.

The team also used 11 measures to assess whether citizens had good lives. Some were basic needs or expectations like nutrition, access to energy and long life expectancy. The others_______ social stability, like income, education, equality, social support and employment prospects.

A(n) ideal country would score zero for resource overshoot and 11 for citizen well-being: everyone’s needs would be met and no natural resources destroyed.

Rich countries overshoot their limits to feed their lifestyles. “The USA transgresses(超越) all seven planetary boundary indicators, but … scores relatively_______on the social targets, achieving nine out of 11,” says team member Julia Steinberger at the University of Leeds. The UK did_______breaking five boundaries, but reaching eight social targets. “They could be described as ‘well-off over-consumers’,” she says.

However, South Africa transgresses the same natural boundaries as the UK, but_______only one social target: nutrition. It is a “dysfunctional over-consumer”, says Steinberger, “because its consumption doesn’t seem to result in a better life” Some poor countries, like Malawi and Senegal, keep within planetary- boundaries, but reach none of the social targets.

A few countries are better at balancing well-being and_______.They include Sri Lanka-which goes beyond no natural limits -Vietnam and Moldova._______, none meets all the well-being targets.

“The_______provides a critical reminder of the tremendous challenge facing humanity,” says Johan Rockstrom of Stockholm University in Sweden.

“We can no longer balance that simply letting the market decide what is best for us will lead to anything but disaster,” says Steinberger.

O’Neill’s team says poorer countries should_______basic needs, which can be met without overshooting limits.Citizens of rich countries should rethink what they need.“Life satisfaction” scores improved only marginally for every ecological limit broken, so scaling back on luxuries could have big environmental benefits.

“Some of the strongest determinants of life satisfaction are good health; strong family and community relationships; economic security in the form of employment or higher incomes; and relative rather than absolute________with respect to the rest of one’s society,” says Steinberger. “There’s a lot we can learn about how to move to lower material forms of life satisfaction.”

五、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ariana Porter was very excited. The next day would be a new day and a new beginning, well, kind of. The next day Ariana would go to a boarding school! There would be no little sister to share a room with, with peace and quiet. She ate her favourite homemade curry(咖喱粉) for the last time that year. Then, she curled up(蜷缩) in her clean bed and shut her eyes.

The next day, Ariana woke up, jumped into her best clothes and flew downstairs. After a quick breakfast, the whole family lined up and said goodbye to her. Ariana’s little sister tried to hug her, but she shrugged off(不予理睬) Liliana. And off she went to boarding school happily.

However, when Ariana got there, everyone looked unwelcoming. A teacher showed her to her dorm(宿舍). It was cold and dark! A few days later, Ariana got several letters. The rainbow one was from her little sister and another from her parents. Ariana couldn’t even be bothered to open them. She just threw them into the main hall’s fireplace when nobody was around.

Every day, Ariana tried to make friends. It was an all-girls school. Unfortunately, she had no luck. She tried to give girls gifts, she tried to be friendly, but they shrugged her off just like she did to her sister. Two months had passed since she began trying to find new friends, but without success. Ariana felt more and more lonely. Something was missing in her life. Something indescribable. Something, or maybe someone.

Week after week went by and then, one day, holding yet another batch of mail, Ariana’s heart trembled. She realized what she was painfully missing, her FAMILY. Whenever she was down, whenever she needed help or comfort, they were there for her. Always. This time she opened the little rainbow envelope and smiled. Reading it filled her heart with joy. Ariana couldn’t reply, for the school didn’t allow that, so she decided to hide the letters under her pillow. The pile grew larger and they were so important to her, for the letters gave her the greatest comfort when she was away from home.

Months passed and then she was eagerly waiting for the day when the school year ended. No more dorm life and unfriendly girls. Ariana skipped to math class excitedly, but couldn’t concentrate. She dreamed about going home.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
