二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、Teachers and parents usually call attention to the pictures when they read storybooks to preschool child. But a new study suggests that calling attention to the words and letters on the page may lead to better readers.

The two-year study compared children who were read in this way in class with children who were not. Those whose teachers most often discussed the print showed clearly higher skills in reading, spelling and understanding. These results were found one year and even two years later.

Shayne Piasta, an assistant professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State University, was an author of the study. She says most preschool teachers would find this method manageable and would need only a small change in the way they teach. They already read story-books in class. The only difference would be increased attention to the printed text. “If you get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word recognition and spelling.” But she says research suggests that very few parents and teachers do this in a systematic way.

More than 300 children aged four and five were observed in classrooms. They came from poor families and were below average in their language skills. For thirty weeks, the children took part in a program called Project STAR— Sit Together and Read. The project is based in Ohio State. It tests the short-term and long-term results of reading regularly to preschool children in their classrooms.

There are different ways that adults can talk to children about print. They can point to a letter and discuss it, and even trace the shape with a finger. They can point out a word and discuss the meaning of the print or how the words tell the story. And they can talk about the organization of the print-- for instance, showing how words are written left to right in English.

【1】What do we know about the ways preschool children are usually taught?

A. Preference is given to the shape of the letters and the organization of the print.

B. More attention is paid to the picture, with words and letters being ignored.

C. The focus of the teaching is on bringing them up to be good readers.

D. Equal attention is paid to the texts and the pictures.

【2】Shayne Piasta suggested that preschool teachers should _______.

A. read storybooks regularly in class.

B. learn to manage their class well

C. often discuss the printed words and letters

D. search for a better method of reading

【3】The children who joined in Project STAR were _________.

A. very poor in their reading

B. mostly cleverer than others

C. especially good at language skills

D. worried about reading problems

【4】Which of the following is TRUE about the study on language skills of preschool children?

A. Many teachers want to change their way of teaching preschool children.

B. Attention of the pictures has made the children uninterested in reading.

C. Teachers are often prevented from taking different approaches to language teaching.

D. Project STAR aims to research into the results of reading books to preschool children in the classroom.

【5】The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A. why we should discuss the meaning of the print

B. the shape of the letter is the focus of teaching

C. how we can teach children about print

D. English words are usually written from left to right

27、Robots have been around for six decades or so. Originally, they were simple devices which did as they were told, working on assembly lines (流水线) in a robotic manner. They were often kept in cags to stop people getting too close. Now, they are stepping out of their cages, equipped with advanced sensors and machine learning. Clearly, the pace of automation is likely to see up, for two reasons.

The first reason is that covid-19 has created social changes which look likely to continue. The “Great Resignation”, in which millions around the world have quit their jobs, may in part be a consequence of lockdowns creating new opportunities for home working. These so-called lifestyle choices about which jobs to do, together with creaking (岌岌可危的) supply chains and a boom in e-commerce, have left warehouses and many other businesses struggling to employ workers.

The second reason is that the robots are getting better. In factories, they are working alongside people. Such robots will increasingly help out in other places too, including hospitals, and in roles, such as caring for an ageing society — which, post-covid, has got used to a more technological future for health care, with “telemedicine” via remote doctors and health-monitoring mobile-phone apps.

Even so, the rise of robots makes some people fear for their jobs and ask how they will earn a living. There is a similar fear in health care that robots will destroy jobs. Indeed, instead of destroying jobs, robots can create them by making businesses more efficient, allowing firms to expand. As Dr. Christensen points out, for the past decade manufacturing employment in America has grown, even as the number of factory robots increased.

Although some experts believe robots will enhance human capability, one problem is that regulation falls behind technology. It seems an awful lot of meetings lie ahead for roboticists and regulators to determine how machines and people will work together.

【1】How is Paragraph 1 developed?

A.By providing an example.

B.By quoting a saying.

C.By making a comparison.

D.By explaining a concept.

【2】What is the result of the “Great Resignation”?

A.The tendency to work at home.

B.The broken-down supply chains.

C.The development of e-commerce.

D.The difficulty in employing workers.

【3】What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A.Experts’ arguments about robots.

B.Robots’ influence on employment.

C.People’s worries about losing jobs.

D.Improvement in business efficiency.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the current regulation?

A.Favourable.

B.Critical.

C.Indifferent.

D.Intolerant.

29、The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) reached milestone agreements to pay members of its men’s and women’s teams equally, making the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes matching money. The agreement comes after years of legal fights and heated bargaining.

The federation has been in difficult negotiations for years with the unions of the women’s national team and the men’s national team. On May 18, it announced separate collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), which are legal contracts between the federation and the soccer players’ unions. The contracts will last through 2028.

The deals grew partly out of a push by players on the more successful women’s team, such as stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe. They were at the forefront of the gender equity fight, demanding that women and men soccer players get paid the same.

“I feel a lot of pride for the girls who are going to see this growing up and recognize their value rather than having to fight for it. However, my dad always told me that you don’t get rewarded for doing what you’re supposed to do—and paying men and women equally is what you’re supposed to do, ” U.S. forward Margaret Purce said. “So I’m not giving out any gold stars, but I’m grateful for this accomplishment and for all the people who came together to make it so.”

Six years ago, five of women’s soccer’s most famous players, including Rapinoe and Morgan, filed a legal complaint against the federation for gender discrimination. They argued that men soccer players made far more money and got much better treatment from the federation. This was against the law, they contended. Twenty-eight women players then followed up three years ago with a gender discrimination lawsuit against the federation. They asked a U.S. court to force the federation to stop treating women unfairly.

Perhaps the biggest sticking point in the negotiations was World Cup prize money paid out by FIFA, the governing body of international soccer. While the U.S, women have been hugely successful internationally, differences in FIFA prize money meant the women took home far less than the men. American women received a $110, 000 bonus for winning the 2019 World Cup. The U.S. men would have received $407, 000 if they had won in 2018.

The unions have agreed to pool FIFA’s payments to them for men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments for 2022, 2023, 2026 and 2027. This means they will combine the total money into one pot, then each player will get matching game appearance fees. The USSF said it is the first federation in the world to pool prize money in this manner.

“I’m proud of you for never giving up and I commend U.S. Soccer for agreeing to do the right thing, ” President Joe Biden tweeted. “Let’s keep up the fight until we close the gender pay gap in every industry.”

The women ended their 6-year-long lawsuit over equal pay in February in a deal calling for the USSF to pay $24 million.

As part of the settlement, players will split $22 million, about one-third of what they had sought in damages. The USSF also agreed to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at the growth of the sport for women.

【1】The underlined word “pool” in paragraph 7 most probably means ________.

A.reject

B.increase

C.collect

D.reduce

【2】Which statement BEST represents Margaret Purce’s attitude toward winning the legal battle for equal pay in the article?

A.She does not want to overly praise the USSF for doing what is right.

B.She does not think FIFA agreed to pay nearly enough in World Cup bonuses.

C.She is concerned about the long-term sustainability of the agreement.

D.She is hopeful that soccer fans will now have more respect for the women’s team.

【3】Why did the author conclude the article with information about the $2 million fund?

A.to explain the difference between what was asked for and what was achieved in the settlement

B.to explain how the women’s soccer team convinced the USSF to agree to the settlement

C.to explain how other aspects of the settlement aim to strengthen the sport overall

D.to explain why soccer coaches will also be able to benefit from the settlement

【4】Which of the following statement BEST summarizes the author’s main argument?

A.FIFA’s bonuses for the U.S. women’s team are still not enough to ensure that women soccer players are equally paid.

B.It is unfair that the U.S. women’s soccer team has been paid less than the U.S. men’s soccer team when the women’s team has been enormously successful.

C.The U.S. women’s soccer team’s fight for equal pay would have been won much more quickly if more of the players and fans had actively supported the cause.

D.The USSF should provide significant back pay to the U.S. women’s soccer team players to make up for years of unfairly underpaying them for their work.
