二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   On the first day of school, all the excited students walked into the room expecting to start: everyone but David.

He had had a hard summer. His father was in jail (监狱). His mother had to work nights, so she wasn't at home in the evening and was sleeping when he woke up.

As the weeks went on, David slowly gave up doing his homework and staying on task, and began to get into more troubles out on the playground. He was going downhill quickly. It was clear that he was looking for any kind of attention—even if it was negative. I also knew that he was not getting much support at home. If David was going to pass the fifth grade, I need to come up with a plan.

One day, David and I sat in the library and just talked. I told him that I knew that he was not an “F” student and that I was not going to let him fail. It was my job to teach him, but his job was to try. We talked about home and what he did after school. He knew what I expected him to do and that I respected him as a person. As a result, his behavior in my room improved. From then on David and I periodically sat in the library and just talked. He told me that his goal was to pass the fifth grade and not be suspended (停学). Finally, the last day of school arrived. David had met his goal.

During Teacher Appreciation (感谢) Week, the students had written about any teacher they wanted. In my booklet, on a wrinkled piece of paper, it reads. “You never give up on me and focus on the silver lining because you know I am smart. And for that I not only appreciate you, but admire you”, signed David. After reading that, I sat down with tears rolling down my face. We, as teachers, never know when or how we affect our students. But it's the note like this that makes all we do worthwhile.

1According to the passage, we know the writer is_____________.

A.talented B.brainless C.patient D.selfish

2Why did David like to make troubles in school?

A.Because his father was put into prison.

B.Because he was disappointed to the society.

C.Because he was laughed at by classmates.

D.Because he wanted to attract attention.

3Which of the following quotes can express the writer's feeling?

A.Teachers appreciate being appreciated, for teacher appreciation is their highest award. —William Prince

B.Teach the children so that it will not be necessary to teach the adults.—Abraham Lincoln

C.What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.—Karl Menninger

D.The very spring and root of honesty and virtue lie in good education.—Plutarch

27、If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.

Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.

They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?

Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.

28、A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty

The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.

The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”

The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents. Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James’ parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.

The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie. It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there.

The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.”

29、Kenya has been at the forefront of the global war on plastic since 2017, when officials outlawed plastic bags. In 2020, the government raised the demand with a ban on single-use plastics. Unfortunately, tons of industrial and consumer plastic waste continue to get poured into landfills daily. However, if 29-year-old Nzambi Matee has her way, the unsightly plastic garbage mountain will soon be transformed into colorful bricks.

The materials engineer’s search for an effective solution to controlling plastic pollution began in 2017, when she set up a small lab in her backyard. It took her nine months to produce the first brick and even longer to convince a partner to help build the machinery to make them.

She says, “I wanted to use my education in applied physics and materials engineering to do something about plastic waste pollution. But I was very clear the solution had to be practical, sustainable and affordable. The best way to do this was by channeling the waste into the construction space and finding the most efficient and affordable material to build homes.”

Her company, Gjenge Makers, now hires 112 people and produces over 1,500 bricks a day, which are made using a mix of plastic products that can’t be reprocessed or recycled. The collected plastic is obtained directly from factories or picked by hired locals from landfills and mixed with sand, heated at very high temperatures, and compressed (压缩) into bricks that vary in color and thickness. The resulting product is stronger, lighter, and about 30 percent cheaper than traditional concrete (混凝土) bricks. Most importantly, it helps repurpose the lowest quality of plastic.

Matee, recognized as one of the Young Champions of the Earth 2020 — the United Nations’ highest environmental honor — is far from done. Her dream is to reduce rubbish by increasing production and expanding her offerings. She says, “The more we recycle plastic, the more we produce affordable housing…the more we create more employment for the youth.”

【1】Which word best describes Kenyan government’s measures against plastic?

A.Temporary.

B.Effective.

C.Fruitless.

D.Unreliable.

【2】Which of the following do we know about Matee?

A.She turns knowledge into actual products.

B.Her company’s funded by the government.

C.She produces brick-making machinery herself.

D.Her bricks are made from recyclable plastic waste.

【3】What’s the greatest strength of Matee’s resulting product?

A.Its low cost.

B.Its wide range of uses.

C.Its economic benefit.

D.Its environmental value.

【4】What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A.Matee’s achievement.

B.Matee’s greater ambition.

C.Multiple challenges Matee faces.

D.Innovative solutions to plastic waste.
