21、An IT company from Finland has developed a new font(字体) which uses machine learning to rewrite bad language into kinder words.
More than a third of bullying takes place online, and the numbers are on the rise, according to a report by the United Nations' educational organization UNESCO. TietoEVRY developed the Polite Type font as a new tool to deal with online bullying among kids, pointing out harmful language and causing users to pick kinder words.
As users try to write hurtful English words, the font will automatically replace them. Writing "I hate you" would, for example, result in the milder "I disagree with you" when Polite Type is used on the computer. Sentences such as "you are ugly" is replaced with "you are not traditionally beautiful" while rude words are blurred(使模糊) completely. The company says it is the first example where a blur has been used as a symbol in a font package. Racial slurs(种族歧视语) are replaced with the racial group the slur is related to, rather than blurring the word entirely.
The vocabulary of the font was co-created with teenagers from Finland. The font's library of words was chosen to include language from different origins, religions, and world views, and will make adjustments as more people and businesses use it. In the future, TietoEVRY suggests that machine learning could be used to teach the font to understand how language is used. Polite Type can be now downloaded and used for free.
"We want bullies to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them," said Kia Haring, global head of communication and sustainability at TietoEVRY. "I hope that our cause acts as a wake-up call for all audiences to consider how bullying could be handled."

22、A glass a day keeps obesity at bay.Alcohol has always been thought to cause weight gain because of its high sugar content, but new research suggests a glass a day could form part of a diet.Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put on weight;those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight.
A spokesman for the research team at Navarro University in Spain says,“Light to moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain”.The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularly that current data do not clearly indicate if moderate drinking increases weight.
Boston University’s Dr.Harvey Finkel found that the biologic mechanisms(生物学机制)relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of moderate drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes(糖尿病),which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very obese people may be at lower risk of diabetes if they are moderate drinkers.
The group says alcohol provides calories that are quickly absorbed into the body and are not stored in fat,and that this process could explain the differences in its effects from those of other foods. They agree that future research should be directed towards assessing the roles of different types of alcoholic drinks, taking into consideration drinking patterns and including the past tendency of participants to gain weight.
For now there is little evidence that consuming small to moderate amounts of alcohol on a regular basis increases one’s risk of becoming obese. What’s more,a study three years ago suggested that resveratrol,a compound present in grapes and red wine, destroys fat cells.

23、 30 St Mary Axe, commonly known as the Gherkin, was designed by internationally noted architect, Lord Norman Foster. Built in 2004, London’s first environmentally sustainable sky-scrapper was constructed for Swiss-Re, the largest re-insurance company in the world. The Gherkin, which is the sixth tallest building in London, was sold for over £600 million in 2007, making it the most expensive location in Britain to have an office. Since its completion, 30 St Mary Axe has won many architectural awards including in 2004 the Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize and in 2006 the BD World Architecture the “most admired new building in the world”.
Lying in the heart of the city, Foster’s building is on the site of London’s historic Baltic Exchange which was severely damaged in 1992. Constructed exactly 100 years before completion of the Gherkin, surviving parts of the Baltic Exchange building were sold and are being re-constructed in Tallinn, the capital of the Baltic country Estonia. The Baltic Exchange, which trades in the sale of merchant vessels and transportation of industrial bulk commodities and originates back to 1744, was started by ship owners and brokers meeting in a coffee house.
At the top of the Gherkin, on the 40th floor, there is a private bar featuring a 360° panoramic view of London. Despite the building being rounded, the “lens” (镜头) shaped glass roof above the bar is the only curved glass in the building, and is similar in design to the glass dome which covered part of the ground floor of the old Baltic Exchange.
The smooth clean lines of the building cover a high tech and environmentally designed interior. To reach the roof bar there is a hydraulic lift, pushed from below, which doesn’t require any machinery above it. Double-glassed gaps in each floor create vertical corridors that help keep warm in the winter and improve air flow in the summer. This, coupled with all the natural light flooding in through the windows, results in the building needing much less energy.
【1】What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.Foster isn’t an English architect.
B.The Gherkin is very famous in the world.
C.The Gherkin is the tallest building in London.
D.The Gherkin is the first sky-scrapper in London.
【2】When was the Baltic Exchange building constructed?
A.In the mid-19th century. B.In the late 19th century.
C.In the early 20th century. D.In the mid-20th century.
【3】What is at the top of the Gherkin?
A.A coffee house. B.The Baltic Exchange.
C.A private bar. D.A private office.
【4】How does the Gherkin manage to save energy?
A.By being equipped with double glass.
B.By stopping people using electricity.
C.By opening all the windows in the summer.
D.By asking people to use less air-conditioning.
24、I still occasionally find myself amazed at the details our ears and brains can pick up on. My quiet work time was recently interrupted by a person in the room next door. I couldn’t see them, but I knew exactly what they were doing: cracking their knuckles(指关节). It’s such a distinctive sound, but what’s really surprising is that it’s so loud. The sound generated is noticeably different from that of creaking hips or knees--it’s specific to fingers. What’s going on? Joint cracking is the sort of thing that everyone has an opinion on and mine is: I can’t do it, and I wouldn’t want to. I have occasionally made the mistake of mentioning this during talks to school kids. 【1】
The usual suspect in the infraction is the joint at the base of each finger. People pull their finger away from the rest of their hand until there’s a deep, muffled click. When medical imaging finally improved to the point where it could spy on the inside of a finger during the process, the true culprit was revealed: a bubble.
At the joint, one bone has a curved bulge(凸起)which sits snugly in a shallow cup forming the base of the next bone up. 【2】 It’s viscous and sticky, and it keeps the joint running smoothly. If you pull on a finger this gap gets gradually wider so that the fluid is now in tension because it’s pulled in both directions.
For those with the right sort of joint to make the cracking sound, the drama is sudden. X-rays and MRI scans show that at the moment of cracking, a gas-filled cavity pops into existence in the synovial fluid(滑液),relieving the tension in the liquid. Gas which had been dissolved in the liquid comes rushing in to fill this new gap. Once the bubble exists, it just sits there until the gas redissolves into the surrounding liquid. 【3】 A bubble already exists, and it’s easy to stretch it as the joint extends without making another one.
【4】 This has been revealed, both by systematic scientific studies and by allergist Donald L. Unger. For his lifelong effort on the subject, Dr. Unger was awarded the 2009Ig Nobel Prize. As a child Dr. Unger was criticized for his cracking habits, so he conducted his own stubborn experiment, cracking the knuckles on his right hand--but not on his left-every day for 60 years. By the time he was 83, neither hand had arthritis. But the dissenting relatives were mostly long gone, depriving him of his “I told you so” moment.
A.This is why you can’t crack a knuckle twice in a row.
B.Bubbles are extremely efficient at making sound, which explains the loudness.
C.Gas bubbles in finger joints make the annoying sound, but it’s unclear why some people form them and others don’t.
D.The reliable result is a deafening flood of clicks as 500 children succumb to irresistible temptation.
E.The space in between them is around a 10th of an inch wide and filled with synovial fluid, the body’s equivalent of engine oil.
F.Most joint crackers have perfectly healthy joints, although there has been a persistent myth that regular joint-cracking can cause arthritis(关节炎)
