21、 The annual Canadian commercial seal hunt is the world's largest hunt of marine mammals. A few weeks old, the seal pups(幼崽)are prized primarily for their skins and also for the omega-3-rich oil used in food supplements--products that are shipped around the world.
This month, the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland, is expected to announce whether products from commercial seal hunting can be marketed in Europe. At present, they cannot. Such products have been banned by the European Union (EU) since 2009 to protect ‘public morals’ Canada and Norway have asked the WTO to overturn the ban — the first of its kind -- and the trade body will soon deliver its final decision.
As an official observer, I have seen the hunt from the ice and from helicopters. The details are grisly. That is why the WTO originally agreed that the EU could act to limit trade on the grounds of public morals — the first time that such a restriction had been put in place.
When they are born, seal pups have white fur. They are abandoned by their mothers at about 12 days of age. Stranded on the unstable ice, they remain alone and unfed for up to six weeks, and during this time their fur changes from white to grey--and the hunters arrive.
The pups are either shot from boats, or clubbed with a wooden bat or an iron-tipped pole called a hakapik. Some shot and injured seals slide into the water and are lost. Many shot and injured animals could potentially suffer for several minutes while the hunters drive their boats close enough to club them unconscious. If the ice is too unstable for the hunters to cross, shot and injured but conscious and reactive seals can be dragged into the boats with long hooked gaffs (鱼叉) before being clubbed.
As a human and as a scientist I consider the hunt to present real and significant welfare concerns. The available scientific evidence supports that opinion. But science, of course, is only one of the factors at play. Perhaps the final word should go to a statement attributed to Mahatma Gandhi: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

23、 It was the beginning of 2011. I had just finished filming the first season of Game of Thrones(《权利的游戏》). With almost no professional experience, I had been given the role of Daenerys Targaryen. The show was so successful that young girls would dress themselves up as Daenerys for Halloween.
And yet, terrified of the attention, terrified of trying to make good on the faith that the creators had put in me, I worked much harder.
On the morning of February 11, 2011, I was getting dressed in a gym when I started to feel a bad headache. I was so exhausted that I could barely put on my sneakers. I tried to ignore the pain, but I couldn’t. I reached the toilet and sank to my knees. A woman came to help me. Then everything became unclear. I only remember the sound of an ambulance.
That operation lasted three hours. When I woke, the pain was unbearable. After four days, they moved me out of the I.C.U. (重症监护室). But one day when a nurse asked me, as part of a series of cognitive (认知的) exercises, “ What’s your name?”, I couldn’t remember my name and I felt terrified: I am an actor; I need to remember my lines. Now, I couldn’t recall my name.
The phenomenon is called aphasia. Then I was sent back to the I.C.U. and, after about a week, I was able to speak and know my name. And I was also aware that there were people in the beds around me who didn’t make it out of the I.C.U. I was continually reminded of just how fortunate I was.
I rarely gave a thought to my health. Nearly all I thought about was acting. I thought of myself as healthy. Once in a while, I would get dizzy. When I was fourteen, I had a migraine (偏头痛) that kept me in bed for a couple of days. But it all seemed manageable — part of the stress of being an actor. Now I think I might have been experiencing warning signs of what was to come.
Anyway, there is something pleasant about coming to the end of Thrones. And I’m so happy to be here to see the beginning of whatever comes next.

24、Members of an elephant family wandering in southwestern China have become international stars! The group left a wildlife reserve in the southwest of Yunnan province more than a year ago and has traveled around 500 kilometers north to the suburbs of the provincial capital city of Kunming.
Along their way, the family visited farms and wandered down city streets. They even dropped in a car shop and showed up at a retirement home. At the home, some elephants attempted to visit rooms, leading a frightened old man to hide under his bed.
Wherever the family goes, they have received official red-carpet receptions. Each day, 2.5 tons of food has been laid out along their way by the local governments. Emergency workers, vehicles and drones have been deployed to follow their movements and keep away the people.
The 15 member family's excursion has also been constantly documented by major social media in China and abroad. YouTube and Weibo are full of short videos showing interesting behaviors of the animals as they continue their path across farmlands, villages and around cities. One of the most popular clips showed two baby elephants being helped out of a ditch by older members of the group. The pictures of the group sleeping received 25,000 posts and more than 200 million views.
It remains unclear why the elephants left their home, although Evan Sun, manager of World Animal Protection, says that possible reasons could include lack of food supply and, most importantly, loss of habitat. But many experts think they are just lost.
Anyway, this is a great opportunity to educate the public about the challenges that wild animals face for survival and the need for better protection from government, industry and society levels.
