21、Five Nutrition Myths and What Health Experts Want You to Know Instead
If you’re looking to improve your diet and achieve your health goals, keep reading to find out what you need to know.
MYTH 1: All fat is bad.
By the 1980s, doctors, government health experts, the food industry and the media were reporting that a low-fat diet could benefit everyone. As a result, many people replaced calories from fat with calories from refined carbohydrates such as white flour and added sugar. 【1】 Examples of those include monounsaturated (单元不饱和的) fats found in olive oil, certain nuts and seeds.
MYTH 2: 【2】
While the nutrition of plant-based drinks can vary, many have more added ingredients which can contribute to poor health than cow’s milk. Typically, cow’s milk has about eight grams of protein per 250 millilitres. Almond drinks on the other hand, typically has one or two grams in the same amount.
MYTH 3: Potatoes are bad for you.
Potatoes have often been defamed in the nutrition community because of their high glycemic index (血糖指数), which can increase your blood sugar sharply. 【3】 They are also inexpensive and available year-round in grocery stores.
MYTH 4: “Calories in, calories out” is the most important factor for maintaining weight.
【4】 But research does not suggest that eating more will result in becoming overweight or obese. Rather, it’s the types of foods we eat that may be the long-term drivers of those conditions.
MYTH 5: Fresh fruits and vegetables are always healthier than canned, frozen or dried varieties.
Research has found that frozen, canned and dried fruits and vegetables can be just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts. 【5】 However, some canned, frozen and dried varieties contain added sugars, saturated (饱和的) fats and sodium, so be sure to read nutrition labels, especially on prepared foods.
A.All drinks are nutritious.
B.They can also be a money saver.
C.Plant drinks are healthier than dairy milk.
D.In reality, healthy fats help reduce your risk.
E.It’s true that extra-processed foods can lead to weight gain.
F.However, they are rich in vitamin C, fibre and other nutrients.
G.If you burn more calories than you consume, you will probably lose weight.
22、A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below l6℃. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world.
In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources(资源):land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example,a lot of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now,but in the long run it actually reduces the world’s wood supply.
Rainforests are often called the world’s drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than l%of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world’s shrinking rainforests.
【1】Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they
A.reflect more heat into the atmosphere
B.bring about high rainfall throughout the world
C.rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than l6℃
D.reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth
【2】What does the word “this” underlined in the third paragraph refer to?
A.We will lose much more than we can gain.
B.Humans have begun destroying rainforests.
C.People have a strong desire for resources.
D.Much carbon dioxide comes from burning rainforests.
【3】It can be inferred from the text that
A.we can get enough resources without rainforests
B.there is great medicine potential in rainforests
C.we will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained land
D.the level of annual rainfall affects wind patterns
【4】What might be the best title for the text?
A.How to Save Rainforests
B.How to Protect Nature
C.Rainforests and the Environment
D.Rainforests and Medical Development
23、It has been found in South Australia that a worm-like creature about the size of a grain of rice is the oldest ancestor on the family tree that includes humans and most animals. The creature lived about 535 million years ago. It is considered to be an evolutionary step forward for early life on Earth.
Researchers have been working hard to find evidence of the common ancestor of most animals. Developing its body structure and organization successfully allowed life to move in specific, purposeful directions. This includes everything from worms and dinosaurs to amphibians(两栖动物) and humans. But for our common ancestor, they knew that fossils(化石) of the tiny, simple creatures they imagined would be nearly impossible to find because of its size and soft body. Then, they turned to fossilized burrows(动物洞穴), dated to the Ediacaran Period, found in South Australia.
For 15 years, scientists knew the burrows were created by the creature. There was no evidence of what made the burrows and lived in them until researchers decided to take a closer look at the burrows. Geology professor Mary Droser spotted impressions shaped like ovals(椭圆形) near the burrows.
A 3-D laser scan revealed the impressions containing evidence of a body shaped and sized like a rice grain, with a noticeable head and tail which suggested it had muscles. The muscles would have enabled the creature to move and create the burrows, like the way a worm moves. And the size of the creature matched with the size of the burrows they found.
【1】What does the underlined word “It” mean in the first paragraph?
A.A family tree.
B.A grain of rice.
C.A worm-like creature.
D.An evolutionary step.
【2】What did the researchers do during the study?
A.They developed the creature in the expected way.
B.They studied a large number of worms and dinosaurs.
C.They observed the burrows close up.
D.They went back to the Ediacaran Period some years ago.
【3】What inspired the scientists to explore the origin of the burrows?
A.3-D laser scan.
B.The impressions.
C.Some good ovals.
D.More burrows.
【4】What does the text mainly tell us?
A.The researchers worked very hard in the burrow.
B.The worm-like creature may be animals’ ancestor.
C.It is very difficult to name a new kind of creature.
D.Australian people like fossils of many creatures.
24、 One evening last summer, when I asked my 17-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response took me by surprise. “What’s a colander (漏勺)?” he asked.
I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for. I felt confident that I’d raised a self-reliant boy, as we all try to do. But could he boil water? Suddenly it hit me: He’d be leaving the house in a year to attend college. No way was I going to send a spoiled prince into the world.
As parents, while we focus on our children’ s confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.
Grandparents being tailors, Ray was genetically programmed to quickly master the basics like refastening a button. One day we covered Advanced Laundry, in which I taught him never to mix a red sweatshirt with white or put sweaters in the dryer. I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother — he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive — but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate what you do as a mom,” he told me one day.
Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子气概的) about being helpless. Not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man.

C.disappointed D.calm
【2】What can we learn from the text?
A.Ray made great progress in cooking.
B.Ray preferred sewing to cooking.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly expected the great day of gift-giving.
Each day the children made some new wonders-strings of popcorn, hand-made decorations, and German bells made from wallpaper samples, which we hung from the ceiling. Through it all she stayed indifferent, watching from a distance, seemingly miles away. I wondered what would happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now so suddenly unsociable. I hoped the celebrations would light her up. But nothing did. We made cards and gifts for mothers and dads, for sisters and brothers, for grandparents, and for each other. At home the students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃弹子) and competed with one another to bring in the prettiest ones. As my gift to them, I made each of my students a little bag for carrying their fried marbles. And I knew they had each made something special for me.
The day of gift giving finally came. We oohed and aahed over our handwork as the presents were exchanged. But she sat quietly watching. I had made a special bag for her, red and green with white lace, hoping very much to see her smile. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she turned away. I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had built around herself.
After school the children left in little groups, but she hesitated, watching them go out of the door. I sat down in a child-sized chair to catch my breath, hardly knowing what was happening when she came to me reaching out her hands, holding a small white box unwrapped and slightly soiled, as though it had been held many times by unwashed, childish hands. She said nothing.
