21、The National Geographic Channel has unearthed a time capsule (时光宝盒) buried by late Apple chairman and co-founder Steve Jobs thirty years ago.
The time capsule was buried in Aspen, Colorado, in 1983, shortly after Jobs attended the International Design Conference being held in that city. Organizers called the device the Aspen Time Tube and contributed items like Rubik's cubes(魔方) and some iconic music. Jobs added his own items to the capsule, including the " Lisa" ( also known as an "Apple" ) mouse" he used for his presentation at the conference.
Younger readers may not recognize the name but the Lisa Apple mouse was one of the first commercial mice released to consumers. The mouse was specially designed for the Apple Lisa computer. It's also the first personal computer to offer users a graphical user interface(图形用户界面)
Initially, the plan was to dig up the time capsule in the year2000, but organizers forgot its exact location. Recently, they brought in researchers working with the National Geographic Channel show Diggers to find the device. Eventually they came across the 13-foot-long, 1.5-foot-diameter tube. Inside they found a lot of 1980s artifacts(人工制品)that are still being catalogued.
“When the end came off, literally things just poured out.” noted Diggers host Tim Saylor "There must be literally thousands of things in there.”
“They had the foresight to put a bunch of stuff in plastic bags." Saylor said. “I could see at least a dozen plastic bags and other items. But I know for sure there got to the photographs in there. People had hand-written things on the back of the photographs, so there will be some really interesting things inside.”
Among the artifacts researchers expect to discover inside: a Steve Jobs speech in which the Apple visionary outlines his predictions for future technologies. We should know more about the researchers, discoveries once the Diggers program airs this fall.

22、“Don’t answer it,” I said to Sam. Our door in the inner city is constantly knocked on; our previous door in the suburbs rarely so. Sam has a full-time job and cannot spend his days answering requests to fix leaking baths or carry cash to the bank.
Sam opened the door and it was Mervin.
“There's a bird on the second floor,” he said. “It’s in trouble.”
Sam followed Mervin upstairs. Mervin pointed and tuned to let Sam look. It was a pigeon. The most common of all birds; the bird most likely to foul your newly washed car. And it wasn’t flying away. It was stamping in circles. As Sam went to look, Mervin coughed, “Number two.”
Sam asked him to repeat that. “Number two.” Mervin said. “The pigeon has been sitting in his own number two, and now it's stuck to his foot.”
It had rained for five days and the bird was young. It could have been sheltering in a wet nest of its own waste, which had then dried on its foot, preventing it from flying away. The pigeon moved in a few more circles. Sam bent to take another look. Mervin said. “All right, then.” and walked away.
“Why does everyone think you must solve the problems around here?” I said to Sam when he returned with his story. “It’s a bird. Just leave it on the stairs, and let nature take its course.” Sam didn’t agree. Then he went to the garage and emptied the cardboard box containing our imported camping mats. He returned with the gray pigeon in the box. He showed the bird to our children and they decided to keep it.
They put its foot in the warm water bath and got rid of its waste. Immediately the pigeon erupted in a bomb of feathers and began flying.

23、For as long as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Growing up, I was skinnier than the other kids and at five I was told I wasn’t attractive and that I must put on some weight. But no matter how much I ate, I stayed thin for years until adolescence. Then I started putting on weight almost immediately. I remember feeling happy as I began to fill out. However, my joy didn’t last long.
I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbours would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around.
I entered adulthood thinking I wasn’t “enough”—an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that “skinny” is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight—self-improvement, discipline—all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined. Consumed by thoughts of the way my body looked, I didn't notice the other ways my body needed attention. I failed to realize, for example, that my period was much heavier and more painful than ever before. Actually I developed a rare disease and later I had two surgeries.
I was always made to feel that my weight was the root of a lot of problems in my life; I have learnt this is not true. After a lot of self-reflection and some professional help, I realized I never learnt to like myself. While two decades of selfhatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance.
I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck’s back.
【1】What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A.She could change her weight at will.
B.She had different beauty standards from others.
C.She tried to love others to build her confidence.
D.She was greatly influenced by others’ opinions.
【2】Why did the author think she wasn't “enough”?
A.She was poorly disciplined.
B.She failed to celebrate “skinny”.
C.She was labeled as lazy for her weight.
D.She put on more weight after entering adulthood.
【3】What caused the author to make a change?
A.Her lighter body.
B.A troublesome illness.
C.Popular beauty standards.
D.Others’ critical comments.
【4】What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Beauty matters.
B.Opinions vary.
C.Worth your weight.
D.Beyond your limits.
24、 Today, widespread social pressure to immediately go to college together with increasingly high expectations in a fast-moving world often causes students to completely overlook the possibility of taking a gap year. After all, if everyone you know is going to college in the fall, it seems silly to stay back a year, doesn’t it? And after going to school for 12 years, it doesn’t feel natural to spend a year doing something that isn’t academic.
But while this may be true, it’s not a good enough reason to condemn gap years. There’s always a constant fear of falling behind everyone else on the socially perpetuated (长期存在的) “race to the finish line”, whether that be toward graduate school, medical school or successful career. But despite common misconceptions, a gap year does not hinder the success of academic pursuits. In fact, it probably improves it.
Studies from the United States and Australia show that students who take a gap year are generally better prepared for and perform better in college than those who do not. Rather than pulling students back, a gap year pushes them ahead by preparing them for independence, new responsibilities and environmental changes — all things that first-year students often struggle with the 「most. Gap year experiences can lessen the blow when it comes to adjusting to college and being thrown into a brand new environmental, making it easier to focus on academics and activities.
If you’re not convinced of the value in taking a year off to explore interests, then consider its financial impact on future academic choices. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 80 percent of college students end up changing their majors at least once. This isn’t surprising, considering the basic compulsory high school curriculum leaves students with a poor understanding of themselves listing one major on their college applications, but switching to another after taking college classes. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but depending on the school, it can be costly to make up credits after switching too late in the game. At Bost on College, for example, you would have to complete an extra year were you to switch to the nursing school from another department. Taking a gap year to figure things out initially can help prevent stress and save money later on.
【1】High-school graduates don’t take a gap year probably because ________.
A.they think it academically misleading
B.they have a lot of fun to expect in college
C.it seems silly to take courses off the campus
D.it feels strange to be different from others
【2】The underlined word “hinder” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.achieve B.prevent
C.develop D.compensate
【3】What can we learn from the text?
A.Switching to another major won’t cost freshmen a lot.
B.All freshmen find it difficult to adapt to the new environment.
C.Taking a gap year helps freshmen concentrate more on studies.
D.High school students know nothing about how to choose a major.
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.The Benefits of the Gap Year B.The ABCs of the Gap Year
C.The Gap Year Comes Back D.The Gap Year: A Dilemma

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My wife, Kay, looked quite worried as I said goodbye at 6:30 a.m. that Sunday morning in December 1963. Two hours later, I was standing on the cliff at Aldinga Beach, 55 kilometres south of our home in Adelaide, South Australia.
Forty of us—each with black rubber suits and flipper (蛙鞋), glass-windowed face masks, snorkels (呼吸管), lead-weighted belts and spearfishing guns—were waiting for the judge’s 9:00 a.m. whistle to announce that the annual South Australian Spearfishing Championship competition began. We all had five hours to bring the judge a bag of fish. The winner would be determined both by the total weight and by the number of different species.
I was confident because I’d taken the 1961-1962 competition and was returning as the reigning champion.
At the whistle blast we waded (跋涉) into the surf. Each man dragged a float (鱼漂) behind him, attached to his lead-weighted belt. We would attach our fish to these floats immediately on spearing them, hoping their blood wouldn’t attract the always hungry and curious predatory sharks that swim the deeper water off the South Australian coast. Still, as a precaution (预防措施), a patrol (巡逻) boat crossed our hunting area, keeping a lookout.
By 12:30, when I dragged a heavy catch of parrot-fish, snapper, boarfish and magpie perch to the beach, I could see from the other piles that I must be well up in the competition.
Suddenly, something huge hit me with huge force on my left side, pushing me forward with wild speed. I became immediately nervous. The pressure on my body seemed to choke me. I tried to shake myself but found that I was trapped as if in a vise. When my mind came into focus, I realized my predicament (困境): a shark had me in its jaws.
Although shocked with the horror, I still felt no pain. As I pulled my arm loose from the shark’s teeth, I felt pain I could have never imagined. But I had succeeded in freeing myself.
