四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、

Have you ever seen a streak (条纹) of light flash across the night sky? You might call it a shooting star. Scientists call it a meteor. A meteor is something that falls through the earth’s atmosphere (the air around the earth) and has a burning long tail. Usually, meteors are rocks that burn (燃烧) up as they fall. As they burn, the rocks shine brightly.

Most meteors burn up quickly in the atmosphere and never hit the ground. But if a meteor does fall down to the ground it is called a meteorite, this doesn’t happen very often but can one day bring the end of world. The rocks that we see as meteors come from different places of space. Scientists call these rocks meteoroids. Like planets, meteoroids travel in space, but they are much smaller than planets. Most meteoroids travel very far from the earth and we don’t see them.

However, some meteoroids can travel very close to us and get in the way of the earth. Gravity (重心) then pulls them through the earth’s atmosphere, turning them into the meteors that you see in the night sky. The largest meteorite ever found in the United States is the Willamette Meteorite. This rock got here thousands of years ago. Today, you can see the 15, 000-kilogram meteorite at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It has been on show there since 1906.

25、   One of the things I always believe is that no matter how bad something is, you can take something positive out of it. The one time I wasn't sure of that was on September 11.

I usually wake up at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. That day, I happened to wake up earlier. I turned on the TV and I saw that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. My first reaction was that it was a terrible accident. Then I saw another plane fly into the South Tower and I realized that I was witnessing an act of terrorism(目击恐怖袭击).

My wife and I spent the day watching the terrible pictures over and over again. When I watched family members looking for their loved ones, the pain in their eyes was something I would never forget. I couldn't understand how something this terrible could have happened. It wasn't until a few weeks after September 11 that I began to see that perhaps some good did come from this tragedy(悲剧). People seem different now, more understanding, more toleran(宽容的). Little things that seemed to be such a trouble before are no longer big things. Personally, I am more tolerant than I was. I realize life is too short to let myself get worried over small things.

People go to work and don't come back. One moment they're living and the next minute they're not. And, it doesn't matter who you are, there is nothing you can do about it. We never know when our time here will be over, so we all need to make the most of every minute we have.

You try to learn from what happened. You can't be used up by it. You can't live by it. All you can do is just live.

A. bad B. good C. real D. terrible

2When did the writer know it was an act of terrorism?

3What did the writer see after he turned on the TV that morning?

A. A fire starting. B. A plane flying.

C. A terrible accident. D. An act of terrorism.

4From September 11, the writer has realized that   .

A. he has become less tolerant towards others

B. he should get worried about little things

C. life is too short to care about others

D. people should make the most of every minute they have

5What's the best title of this passage?

26、   Playing video games can be a fun way to relax or spend time with friends. In some schools, teachers use games like Minecraft to encourage teamwork and communication.

But for some players, gaming is an unhealthy habit. They stay up late playing games. They do little or no homework. They give up other hobbies and pay little attention to their families and friends. The video-game world seems a friendlier place than the real one.

Mental health experts have taken notice of this problem. The WHO added game disorder (障碍) to its list of health condition. A person may have the disorder if games have done harm to his relationship with families and friends, or if it has influenced his daily activities. Clifford Sussman treats games addiction ().He says that children who have the game disorder often get angry when a parent stops them from playing games.

Then what makes video games addictive? Here is the answer. Playing video games makes players excited. After a while, the players become numb (麻木的).Then they lose control of themselves, so they play even more. Clifford says that players should take at least an-hour-long break after playing video games for an hour. Their brains need time to recover. Clifford advises young players should answer a simple question: “Are you in control, or is the game in control?”

1The writer develops his idea in Paragraph 2 by   .

C.giving some examples D.introducing the result of a survey
