About a week after Glenda and Raphi Savitz welcomed their daughter Samantha to the world, they learned that she was deaf. “We knew right away that we had to start learning American Sign Language,” Glenda says.
What the new parents didn’t know was that their neighbors in Newton, Mass, would decide they needed to start learning sign language, too.
The Savitzes had moved to their neighborhood—a community of about 100 houses, on a peninsula(半岛)in the Charles River—just three months earlier. It’s a place where most families have lived for many years. When they moved in, Glenda says a neighbor stopped by to send him a directory(电话号码簿)of everyone who lived in the neighborhood. She says their next-door neighbors called themselves “newcomers” to the area—and they had been there for 17 years. “It makes you think that this is a place people don’t want to leave,” Glenda says.
When young Samantha was out and about with her parents, neighbors like Jill McNeil were sad that they couldn’t talk to her. Soon McNeil with three other neighbors quietly attended local adult education classes in American Sign Language. “I asked our teacher Rhys McGovern if he would come here and teach more neighbors,” McNeil explains. “So that’s how it started.” 20 neighbors immediately went to the class.
The classes have been so popular that there are now two offerings, on two different weeknights, bringing the number of neighbors learning the language to about 40. Many of the students are older neighbors. But there are also younger parents, and two school-age girls.
As a result of that neighborly effort, Samantha, now 3, moves easily around the neighborhood. “It’s amazing that they’re signing to her,” says Raphi. “We’re just so thankful that we’re living around these wonderful people,” he says.
And they’re not the only ones who say they’re thankful. “We are really enjoying the whole process, not only the learning of American Sign Language, but the learning together,” says MeNeil. “It’s made our neighborhood a closer place.”
【1】What did Glenda think of the new community at first?
A.It’s giving special attention to education.
B.It’s mainly made up of newcomers.
C.It’s a community where sign language is used.
D.It’s attractive to the people living there.
【2】Who started the program of learning sign language in the neighborhood?
A.Jill McNeil.
B.Raphi Savitz.

【3】Why did the neighbor give Glenda the directory?
A.To ask for her family’s information.
B.To show the history of the neighborhood.
C.To help her family know neighbors better.
D.To continue a tradition in the neighborhood.
【4】What can we say about the class?
A.It needs old neighbors’ support.
B.It is difficult for most neighbors.
C.It is popular among the neighbors.
D.It mainly attracts younger students.
【5】What did learning American Sign Language bring to the neighborhood according to McNeil?
A.Better living conditions.
B.Stronger ties among neighbors.
