二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Gautam Shah had spent 20 years working in IT—and his whole life caring about nature. He saw advances in conservation that got mentioned only in science journals, “but the story lines within that data are amazing; they’re fascinating,” Shah says. ‘They’re absolutely things that can engage an audience. ”

Eager to use his techie skills for wildlife conservation, Shah—a National Geographic explorer—founded a game company called Internet of Elephants in 2016. The Kenya-based start-up designs digital experiences to tell real conservation stories based on real data. One example: Wildeverse, an improved reality mobile app like Pokemon Go, launched in April 2020. In the game, players can “track” apes (类人猿) by collecting environmental samples such as fruit and animal waste. Rather than putting lots of high-tech tricks in a game, Shah says, the company prioritizes (优先) telling an interesting, true story through whatever technology is best suited to it.

Shah believes that gaming has a unique ability to connect audiences with wildlife in a deep, personal way that will show much concern and advocacy. His goal is for Internet of Elephants to reach more than 50 million people by 2027.

Hopefully, he says, “we can create an entire industry where creating games and these types of digital experiences about wildlife conservation becomes as common things as creating a wildlife documentary. ”

C.Find apes by following their movements.

D.Have “conversations” with many animals like apes.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Gautam Shah?

A.Considerate and ambitious.

B.Creative and responsible.

D.Curious and generous.

22、 The thing is,my luck’s always been ruineD. Just look at my name: Jean.Not Jean Marie,or Jeanine,or Jeanette,or even Jeanne.Just Jean.Did you know in France,they name boys Jean? It’s French for John.And okay,I don’t live in France.But still,I’m basically a girl named John.If I lived in France,anyway.

This is the kind of luck I’ve had since before Mom even filled out my birth certificate. So it wasn’t any big surprise to me when the cab driver didn’t help me with my suitcase.I’d already had to tolerate arriving at the airport to find no one there to greet me,and then got no answer to my many phone calls, asking where my aunt and uncle were.Did they not want me after all? Had they changed their minds? Had they heard about my bad luck—all the way from Iowa—and decided they didn’t want any of it to rub off on them?

So when the cab driver, instead of getting out and helping me with my bags, just pushed a little button so that the trunk (汽车后备箱) popped open a few inches,it wasn’t the worst thing that had ever happened to me.It wasn’t even the worst thing that had happened to me that day.

According to my mom, most brownstones in New York City were originally single-family homes when they were built way back in the 1800s.But now they’ve been divided up into apartments,so that there’s one—or sometimes even two or more families—per floor.

Not Mom’s sister Evelyn’s brownstone, though.Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Ted Gardiner own all four floors of their brownstone. That’s practically one floor per person, since Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Ted only have three kids,my cousins Tory,Teddy, and Alice.

Back home,we just have two floors, but there are seven people living on them. And only one bathroom. Not that I’m complaining.Still, ever since my sister Courtney discovered blow-outs,it’s been pretty frightful at home.

But as tall as my aunt and uncle’s house was,it was really narrow—just three windows across.Still,it was a very pretty townhouse, painted gray. The door was a bright, cheerful yellow. There were yellow flower boxes along the base of each window, flower boxes from which bright red—and obviously newly planted, since it was only the middle of April, and not quite warm enough for them.

It was nice to know that, even in a sophisticated (世故的) city like New York, people still realized how homey and welcoming a box of flowers could be.The sight of those flowers cheered me up a little.

Like maybe Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Ted just forgot I was arriving today, and hadn’t deliberately failed to meet me at the airport because they’d changed their minds about letting me come to stay.

Like everything was going to be all right, after all.

  Yeah.With my luck,probably not.

I started up the steps to the front door of 326 East Sixty-Ninth Street, then realized I couldn’t make it with both bags and my violin.Leaving one bag on the sidewalk,I dragged the other up the steps with me.Maybe I took the steps a little too fast, since I nearly tripped and fell flat on my face on the sidewalk.I managed to catch myself at the last moment by grabbing some of the fence the gardeners had put up…

【1】Why did the author go to New York?

A. She intended to go sightseeing there.

B. She meant to stay with her aunt’s family.

C. She was homeless and adopted by her aunt.

D. She wanted to try her luck and find a job there.

【2】According to the author, some facts account for her bad luck EXCEPT that ________.

A. she was given a boy’s name in French

B. the cab driver didn’t help her with her bags

C. her sister Courtney discovered blow-outs

D. nobody had come to meet her at the airport

【3】The underlined phrase “rub off on” in Paragraph 3 probably means _________.

A. have an effect on

B. play tricks on

C. put pressure on

D. throw doubt on

【4】From the passage,we can know that _________.

A. the author left home without informing her mother

B. the author arrived in New York in a very warm season

C. her aunt’s family lived a much better life than her own

D. her aunt and uncle were likely to forget about her arrival

23、He had two armed guards protecting him until his death aged 55. He also had two massive tusks(象牙)and, just as important, he had a name. Ahmed the elephant received the special treatment until his death in 1974, under an order from Kenya’s then-president Jomo Kenyatta. The name helped give Ahmed and, by extension, the cause of elephant conservation greater recognition.

With Ahmed the elephant in mind, Kenya last week launched the Elephant Naming Festival in which people get the chance to adopt an elephant after contributing money toward their chosen animal’s conservation.

The initiative gives the adoptive parent priority when it comes to choosing the first name of the elephant. The second name will be a Maasai(马赛族)one based on the animal’s profile, history, role in the family and physical attributes like the state of its tusks.

Launching the program, Najib Balala, a top official at the Ministry for Tourism and Wildlife, said the elephant-naming initiative will bring greater awareness of the need for conservation and promote tourism. Balala said the event will be held each year on Aug 12, observed as World Elephant Day.

“We feel that this is a great opportunity for everyone to be part of the sustainability of tourism and wildlife in Kenya for future generation,” Balala said.

“Wildlife is a big part of Kenya’s heritage and ensuring that future generations enjoy this resource should always remain the most important. The launch of the Magical Kenya Elephant Naming Festival builds on the good work that the Kenya Wildlife Service and other partners have been doing over the years.”

【1】What has the special treatment to Ahmed brought about?

A.More people are willing to protect elephants.

B.More people are anxious to collect tusks.

C.More elephants are guarded by armed soldiers.

A.Adopt an elephant according to its role in the family.

B.Take priority for giving their elephant’s first name.

C.Contribute money toward launching the initiative.

D.Consult the elephant’s profile to give it the second name.

【3】Why was the Elephant Naming Festival launched?

A.To be in memory of the dead elephant Ahmed.

B.To raise money for the cause of elephant conservation.

C.To contribute to wildlife protection and sustainable tourism.

D.To offer people a chance of naming and adopting an elephant.

【4】What is Najib Balala’s attitude to the elephant-naming initiative?

A.Supportive.

B.Objective.

C.Doubtful.

D.Disapproving.

24、Eight films are named for Best Picture at the 2021 Oscars. Here are my favorites.

The Father

The Father is the best writing I've seen this year. It reminds me of a diamond, through which light reflects in unpredictable directions. It is a movie about a man named Anthony (played by Anthony Hopkins) who becomes confused and unhappy when he needs to move into his daughter Anne s flat because his health is getting worse. Anne played by Olivia Colman) can't bear the thought of putting her father in a nursing home.

Minari

Minari is the story of Korean immigrants Jacob (played by Steven Yeun) and Monica( played by Yeri Han), who move their two small children from California to Arkansas in the 1980s, to realize Jacob's dream of farming. Minari is both a family drama seen through the eyes of a Korean American boy and a moving tale of love and loss in the American heartland.

Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal is a moving, and sometimes heartbreaking drama. I love its sound design in particular. In the drama, Riz Ahmed plays Ruben, a hard rock drummer who tours with his girlfriend Lou (played by Olivia Cooke), a singer. Both are former addicts, and both have stopped drinking for years. But then Ruben's hearing starts to disappear and ends up living at a center for deaf adults who are adjusting to life without hearing.

Mank

Mank leads the Oscar nominees (被提名作品) , with 10 nods in all. It is the tale of Herman Mankiewicz (played by Gary Oldman), the man who co-wrote Citizen Kame, which is still widely considered one of the greatest movies of all time.

【1】Which movie is best loved by the author for its writing?

A.Minari.

B.Mank.

C.The Father.

D.Sound of Metal.

【2】Who is played by Riz Ahmed?

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As mountains go, 1,642-foot Squaw Peak isn't particularly impressive. But its inviting views of western Massachusetts have tricked hikers into becoming content among its steep, slippery cliff's (悬崖), resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.

Henry Grant, a week shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak's record. As such, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day in August 2019. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the splendid view; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was peeking over the lip of the high cliff with her husband.

When Grant's mother rejoined him, the two headed down the trail. Suddenly, he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!" a man yelled. Grant wheeled around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. She'd fallen off the side of the mountain.

Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant decided to lend a hand. After assuring his mother that he would be safe, Grand walked off the trail alone.

After 15 minutes of climbing over very large rocks, pushing past sharp brush, and slipping down patches of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and crumpled in a kneeling position on a small rocky outcropping (露出地面的岩石). The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Incredibly, she was alive.

“Paula!" Grant shouted.“ Paula. Is that you?"

The woman hardly responded. Grant called 911 to report her location. He waited where he was for a bit, but she kept trying to move, and every time she moved, she slipped a little more. Afraid that in her confused state of mind she might fall off the outcropping to her death, Grant crawled on all fours up a tight, narrow path, gaining traction (牵引力) by digging into the dirt with his fingers and feet until he reached Paula.
