二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、While psychologists have studied topics like happiness, optimism, and other human strengths for decades, positive psychology wasn’t officially identified as a branch of psychology until 1998 when Martin Seligman was elected president of the American Psychological Association (APA). Seligman suggested that psychology had become too focused on mental illness. While this had brought about valuable treatments that enabled psychologists to treat a number of diseases and disorders that made people less unhappy. It meant that psychology was neglecting what was good about life—and what the average person could improve.

Seligman called for research into what makes normal people’s lives positive and fulfilling and suggested that the field should develop interventions that could make people happier. He stated that psychology should be just as concerned with nurturing (滋养) the good things in life as it was with healing the bad.

Seligman made positive psychology the theme of his term as APA president and used his role to popularize the word. From there the field took off. It received a great deal of attention from mainstream media outlets. Meanwhile, the first Positive Psychology summit was held in 1999, followed by the first International conference on Positive Psychology in 2002.

Interest in positive psychology has remained high ever since. In 2018, a quarter of the undergraduate students at Yale University enrolled in a course devoted to the subject of happiness. In 2019, 1,600 individuals attended the World Congress of Positive Psychology and research in the field has generated tens of thousands of academic papers.

Psychologist Christopher Peterson pointed out that positive psychology is meant to serve as an extension of the areas of psychology that focus on mental illness and human weakness. Positive psychologists don't wish to replace or abandon the study of human problems, they simply wish to add the study of what’s good in life to the field.

22、   HOW TO GET THERE

BA and Royal Jordanian airlines fly direct between London Heathrow and Jordan’s capital city Amman (from £435; rj. com). Flight time is five hours.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Jordan is a joyfully easy country to travel around, in part due to its small size. You could drive from top to bottom in little over five hours if you wanted to. The national bus company has services between the main towns, and limited options to Petra and the Dead Sea. For full flexibility, you're better off hiring a car—roads are in good condition, and other drivers tend to be less manic (not stand up to free use of the car horn) compared to other countries in the Middle East. The traffic in Amman makes it frustrating, and nerve-wracking, to navigate, so pick up and drop off your car at the airport, a little outside of the city. The usual suspects have offices there (week’s hire from £235; hertz. jo).

HOW LONG TO SPEND

Given the short travel times between major sites, you could feasibly whip around Jordan in little under a week, spending a night in each location. However, it’s important to factor in the weather: your pace will slow in high temperatures, and you’ll find many Jordanians sensibly spending the hottest part of the day indoors, indulging in a long lunch. You’ll also want to devote a proper amount of time to each location: two or three nights in each of Petra and Wadi Rum will allow you to get to a few less explored corners, while two nights in Amman and one each at the Dead Sea and hot springs is about right. If you add in a side trip for some diving in the Red Sea, two weeks is plenty.

WHAT TO BUDGET

Staying in budget guesthouses, eating only from markets and street stalls, and using public transport, you could survive in Jordan on around £40 per day. Factor in a midrange hotel, car hire, guided tours and meals in local restaurants, and the figure could rise to £100-plus a day. The national currency is the dinar(第纳尔), and is available from ATMs at all the main sites.

WHEN TO GO

High season is September to October and March to May, when the weather is warm but bearable. Note that price hikes are common in this period, and hotels get booked far in advance. One of the most pleasant times to visit is winter, from November to February, though be aware the desert gets very cold at night during this period. If you can take the extreme temperatures of summer, it can be an excellent time to travel, with fewer tourists around.

HOW TO PLAN

See Lonely Planet’s Jordan and the Jordan tourist board’s official site, visitjordan.com, which has a wealth of information on general travel in the region and specific sites.

1Which of the following statements is True about travelling in Jordan according to the passage?

A.Drivers in Jordan use car horn more freely than those in other countries.

B.It's better to drive your own car since the traffic in Amman is frustrating.

C.Weather should be taken into consideration when you arrange holiday.

D.Diving in Red Sea is a must if you plan to travel in Jordan for one week.

2Which factor is NOT related with the budget according to the passage?

A.To choose what kind hotels.

B.To eat what kind of food.

C.Whether to use cash or not.

D.When to travel in Jordan.

3The word “hikes” in paragraph 5 can be best replaced by the word “   ”.

A.declines B.rises C.varies D.collapses

23、Could a new treatment developed by the US company Lilly mean “the beginning of the end” of Alzheimer’s? Could we even cure it some day? These are headlines and questions swirling (流传) around after news of a new drug, called donanemab, showed promising results in phase-3 trials.

The brain science behind Alzheimer’s is complex, but CT and MRJ scans suggest that poisonous changes occur in the brain, including the abnormal build-up of proteins called amyloid plaques and tau tangles. The damage starts in the parts of the brain essential for forming memories but then spreads throughout the organ, with brain tissue shrinking significantly.

Developing treatments for Alzheimer’s has been a challenge, with almost 20 years passing with no new drugs. But in the last year, two new ones have emerged: donanemab and lecanemab. Neither are cures or magic bullets for the disease, but they do address key symptoms. They target the amyloid proteins that can accumulate in the brain and damage neurons, slowing down its progression.

While this news is exciting, there are major caveats. One is whether it will ever become available on the NHS. The cost is estimated to be about £20,000 per person per year of treatment.

Another is the serious side effects: in the study, brain swelling occurred in 24% of participants and brain bleeding occurred in 31.4% on the drug compared with 13.6% in the placebo (安慰剂) group. There were also three deaths during the trial.

Part of the problem for me, as an academic, in assessing the drug is that the full results of the trial haven’t yet been shared publicly or published in a peer-review journal. We cannot access the full data or examine the trial yet, and there is always a motivation for private companies to overstate the effectiveness of new drugs. Trial results need to be assessed by an independent body of experts.

While it is unlikely to change clinical practice until at least 2025, the news of donanemab is again an indication that science is continuing to make progress when it comes to treating the major causes of illness and death, even one related to the highly complex inner workings of the brain, So, there are caveats and the need for caution, but these new drugs are indeed the grounds for that rare thing these days: hope.

【1】What can we learn about Alzheimer’s from the passage?

A.There exists a new drug to cure it completely.

B.Most people will develop Alzheimer’s when they are old.

C.It is caused by the accumulation of some proteins in the brain.

D.It results from the loss of memories as people get older.

【2】What does the underlined word “caveats” mean in paragraph 4?

A.Warnings.

B.Discussions.

C.Debates.

D.Weaknesses.

【3】What is the problem of the new drug according to the author as an academic?

A.It has serious side effects such as brain bleeding and deaths.

B.The effectiveness may be blown up without fair assessment.

C.The cost of the new drug is out of reach for ordinary people.

D.There is no possibility for new drugs to be admitted into the NHS.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the new drug?

A.Approving.

B.Doubtful.

C.Unclear.

D.Indifferent.

24、   The mind is a wonderful thing. It’s also excuse-making machine that frequently tries to convince us not to take action we know are good for us.If we hadn't learned about these excuses, or how to overcome them, we would never have succeeded in making these positive changes.

So why does the mind mess with us and make unreasonable excuses? Because the mind wants comfort, that's the reason. It’s afraid of discomfort, pressure and change. The mind is absorbed in its comfort zone, and anytime we try to stretch that zone too far, for too long, the mind tries desperately to get back to "ground zero" at any cost. These damaging excuses, such as "I can't do it", "It is too hard for me", "It’s too late now" and so on, are no strangers to our minds.

It seems too difficult at first, so you think you can't stick to the positive change you're making. This excuse can be countered (对抗)by looking at the fact that other people were no more capable than you thought you were. For example, my 60-year-old next-door neighbor finished running a marathon, so I told myself, "If she can do it, so can I !" Truth be told, the only person who tells you "I can't" is yourself. If you hear those words echoing in the back of your mind, tune them out.

I've witnessed people reinventing themselves at all ages 48-year-olds starting families, 57-year-olds graduating from college for the first time, 71-year-olds starting successful businesses, and so forth.

Another common excuse is that "I've already failed too much." If you break down, it's fine, because you are only human.Just don't stay down; take a rest, and then pick yourself up so you can go to where you'd rather be.As Winston Churchill said, "Success is never final; failure is never fatal .It is courage to continue that counts."

Some people feel like quitting when they have almost reached their goal, while others attain  goals through their efforts until the last second. So make some necessary adjustments to get rid of the bad habit of making excuses.Keep going! No excuses! Think, work, and climb, that's how you'll move your life forward.

1Why does our mind make excuses?

A.It tends to seek comforts rather than suffering.

B.It needs rest and relaxation .

C.It is preparing for the difficult times.

D.It is the way it tries to find a solution.

2What might "ground zero" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The lowest spot. B.The safest place

C.The original place D.The proper position

3Knowing his neighbor finished the marathon made the author realize________.

A.completing a marathon was not too difficult

B.people often neglect their abilities

C.looking down upon the others is wrong

D.people shouldn't let negative thoughts step in their way

4For someone who fears failure, the author advises him to_______.

A.learn from those good examples

B.stop for a while and examine himself

C.try to adjust himself, and get back on his feet

D.look for new directions and keep trying

5What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?

A.To tell readers how to make a change.

B.To help readers develop a new view of life.

C.To encourage readers to leave their comfortable zone.

D.To tell readers to stop making excuses and keep fighting.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a recent Saturday evening, my wife, my son Jack and I were having dinner when we heard the sounds of a group of kids talking in the street, outside our home. Then out of the blue came two loud thuds (闷响) above our bedroom window, followed by the noise of laughter and lite kids running away down our street.

I turned on the external lights and rushed outside, unsure of what had caused the two thuds or what damage I could expect to see. The silence of the night was broken by the distant laughter of the neighborhood kids. At that moment I wanted to run after them. However, running barefoot on the road in the dark wasn’t a wise thing.

The light above our garage helped me to identify just what had happened. Our home had been the victim of “an egg bombing”! Faced with the need to clean up this sticky mess, I was annoyed with the kids’ bad tricks. I decided to remove the mess the next morning.

The next morning, I walked out to check the stains left by the two eggs, followed by little Jack with a book in his hand. “Where are the egg stains?” he asked. I soon found them and pointed to them. Two patches (小块) of yellowish egg stains were on the wall above a large and wide metal awning (雨棚). Right below the awning was our front bedroom window. Our metal awning had a strong ability to protect this window from rain and other heavy things that could possibly fall down.

After I pointed to the egg stains, Jack angrily said, “Bad kids.” Then, as usual, he walked to the bench below the front bedroom window and sat down to read his storybook. Jack liked reading there each morning. While Jack was reading, I carried a mop and placed a ladder on the front wall beside the bedroom window. I was ready to wash off the dry egg stains. I knew the task was challenging. My annoyance with the bad kids reached the level of the night before. Angrily, I climbed the ladder. Minutes later, I cleaned up the first egg stain.

注意:

1.续写词数应为150左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Just then, I was surprised to find one piece of glass in the window just below the awning badly cracked.
