When the dog is two years old,it starts training with the blind person it will live with. The dog and its new owner make many trips from downtown to where the blind person lives so the dog becomes familiar with the normal atmosphere.During the training,a sighted trainer always remains with them. A blind person who is getting a guide dog for the first time will train for about a month. 22、   In 1973, Mark Granovetter, a sociology professor at Stanford University, published a paper entitled The Strength of Weak Ties. It went on to become one of the most influential sociology papers of all time. Until then scholars had assumed that an individual’s well-being depended mainly on the quality of relationships with close friends and family. Granovetter showed that quantity matters, too. He categories a person’s social world as “strong ties” and “weak ties”. His central insight was that for new messages and ideas, weak ties are more important to us than strong ones. As Granovetter pointed out, the people whom we often talk to swim in the same pool of information as we do. We depend on acquaintances whom we see infrequently to bring us news of opportunities.

This was the idea behind the Pixar building, the design of which was made by Steve Jobs. The building has a large central hall through which all employees have to pass several times a day. Jobs wanted colleagues to run into each other, grab coffee and have a chat. He believed in the power of these seemingly random conversations to fire up creativity.

Encounters with weak ties can be good for our mental wellbeing, too. Gillian Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex, investigated the extent to which people get happiness from weak-tie relationships. She found that on days when a participant had a greater number of casual interactions with weak ties — say, a neighbour, a member of yoga class – they experienced more happiness and a greater sense of belonging.

For all these reasons, we should continue to try and find ways to cultivate weak-tie relationships. Sandstrom adds that we can also engage in more weak-tie-style interactions with our strong ties. The goal is to let others know you are thinking of them without asking for a  great deal of time, energy or attention.

【1】Why does Granovetter think weak ties are more important?

A.They are smaller in number.

B.They form same circle of friends.

C.They are sources of new information .

D.They are related to close friends and family.

【2】Which of the following can be categorized as weak ties?

A.Neighbors.

B.Best friends.

C.Parents.

D.Husband or wife.

【3】What is the function of the central hall in Pixar building?

A.It helps staff build friendship.

B.It allows staff to have a break.

C.It encourages staff to meet and chat.

D.It helps Jobs communicate with staff.

【4】What does Sandstrom want to convey in the last paragraph?

A.We can develop weak ties into strong ties.

B.We should spend more time with strong ties.

C.We should balance weak ties with strong ties.

D.We can apply casual interactions to strong ties.

23、   Much of the public debate around early childhood education comes down to which matters more academics or play. That's a false dilemma. Play is really the way that young children learn and guided play is the key. It's a way that they experience the world, and it helps them learn more deeply.

We should be concerned that the“skill and drill”approach to teaching academics is most  frequently used in classrooms serving at-risk preschoolers, in an attempt to close the gap on school readiness. Unfortunately, these teaching methods can turn young kids off to school and introduces the possibility of shame and anxiety. 46 Skill and drill” doesn't teach kids the curiosity and critical (批判的)thinking skills that they need to develop in early childhood.

However, pure free play—an approach advocated more frequently by wealthier groups—also misses the mark. “I hear a lot about just ‘free play classrooms’. ” But Suzanne Bouffard, an education researcher, said if it only involves setting out materials and not thinking about learning goals, there’s a real missed opportunity. For example, she said, researchers have found that children used more complex language about building activities when they had a goal in mind.

What effective preschools aim for is “guided play”in which adults create a purposeful play environment that encourages students to exploreFor example, in setting up blocks, a teacher might put up pictures of buildings to inspire kids. They may ask students, “What are you doing?” and gently push kids’ thinking by offering new information.

Of course, the ability to find this balance rests with teachers. Good teachers make it look really easyThat's why it's really important that we invest(投入)in teachers and give them the training to guide play without overly controlling it and to encourage kids to develop an understanding of letters and numbers without “skill and drill”.

1Which of the following matters most in early childhood education?

A.Having guided play. B.Learning after play.

C.Seeing the world. D.Studying academic courses.

2What do we know about the “skill and drill” approach?

A.It works best for preschoolers.

B.It helps develop kids’ curiosity.

C.It limits kids’ development.

D.It bridges the gap on school readiness.

3Which of following best explains “misses the mark” underlined in Paragraph 3?

A.Meets learning goals. B.Loses points in exams.

C.Troubles the classroom. D.Fails to achieve the goal.

4Why does a teacher put up pictures of buildings?

A.To encourage the kids to copy.

B.To offer extra information.

C.To share the teaching purpose  with the kids.

D.To inspire the kids to explore.

24、Potted house plants are commonly thought to clean indoor air, often finding themselves in homes and offices for this reason. But scientists now believe their power might be wildly overestimated.

Plants are thought to absorb volatile (易挥发的) organic compounds (VOCs), a type of indoor pollution. But simply opening a few windows or fitting an air handling system in an office can clean the air faster than plants, according to researchers at Drexel University, Pennsylvania.

Depending on the size of the space, the researchers calculated it would take between 10 and 1, 000 plants per square meter of floor space to clean the air at the same level as an open window or specialized equipment.

As people in developed countries spend up to 85 percent of their time indoors, it is important to understand the sorts of pollutants we encounter in these enclosed spaces and find effective ways to control them, the authors of a study on the subject argued.

Co-author Michael Waring, professor in Drexel’s College of Engineering, told Newsweek, “We noticed that there was a common understanding on the Internet that potted plants improve air quality.”

“Though many of us in the indoor air quality field had come to the conclusion that this assumption was not true, there was no definite study to prove that plants were ineffective on VOC removal. ”

Waring told Newsweek he partly traced the exaggerated (夸张的) idea back to a frequently quoted 1989 NASA study, which looked at how to purify the air of space stations. The research is thought to be significant enough to have its own Wikipedia page.

For their study, published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, Waring and his student Bryan Cummings looked over 12 existing studies relating to indoor plants and air quality conducted over the past three decades.

【1】Why are potted house plants often used in homes and offices according to the text?

A.They can improve people’s mood.

B.They can beautify homes and offices.

C.They are commonly thought to make people more relaxed.

D.They are usually thought to be able to clean the air.

【2】What does “this assumption” in the sixth paragraph refer to?

A.Potted plants improve indoor air quality.

B.Potted plants are ineffective on absorbing indoor pollutants.

C.Opening a few windows in an office can drive pollutants off.

D.Specialized equipment in an office can handle indoor pollution.

【3】What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.The causes of indoor bad air quality.

B.The influences of bad air quality on people's health.

C.The effective methods of controlling indoor pollution.

D.The significance of controlling indoor pollution.

【4】What can we infer from Michael Waring’s words?

A.Potted plants are quite effective on removing VOCs.

B.The idea that potted plants can purify air is overestimated.

C.Potted plants can improve air quality to a great degree.

D.There is no evidence to prove that potted plants can purify air.
