二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Online shoppers often feel they are being watched. Put an item in your basket but fail to buy it, and it may follow you around the Internet for days. Announce your engagement on social media and you will be hit with advertisements for the honeymoon.

On April 26, Apple, which supplies one-fifth of the world’s smart phones and around half of America’s, introduces a software update. Its latest mobile operating system forces apps to ask users if they want to be tracked. Many will decline. It is the latest privacy move forcing marketers to rethink how they target online advertisements. Stronger privacy protections may make their advertisements less effective. In 2018, the EU imposed its General Data Protection Regulation and California in USA introduced the California Consumer Privacy Act. Both made it harder to harvest users’ data. Since 2020 Apple’s Safari web browser has blocked the “cookies” that advertisers use to see what people get up to online.

Apple’s latest change makes explicit an option that was previously hidden deep in its phones’ settings. Users can forbid apps to access their “identifiers for advertisers” (IDFA) code, which singles out their device, and from tracking their activity across other firms’ apps and websites.

The platforms best-placed to survive the shake-out are those with lots of consumer data of their own. Google’s $147 billion advertisement business gets most of the information it needs from the terms users type into its search bar. Amazon has the advantage of being able to track what people buy after seeing advertisements on its site—a “closed loop”, as marketers call it. Apple knows where iPhone-users go, what time they wake up and much besides.

Not every platform will be able to adapt as easily. Smaller publishers with fewer data and resources will suffer. Publishers that rely on third-party cookie will be hit hardest. The day Apple launched its new policy, a group of German publishing companies submitted a legal complaint with Germany’s antitrust authorities. Small platforms may also find it harder to persuade phone users to trust them with their data.

【1】After you announce your engagement on social media, you’ll probably ________.

A.have to answer questions about privacy

B.be visited by salesmen from different companies

C.be frequently tracked in your daily work and life

D.receive large quantities of advertisements on honeymoon

【2】What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.California is the largest state in the USA.

B.Apple users were not disturbed by advertisements.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “singles out” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Picks out.

B.Gives out.

D.Puts out.

【4】What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Apple’s users will no longer worry about their privacy.

B.Platforms relying on third-party cookies will close down.

C.Many physical stores have been affected by Apple’s new move.

D.Apple’s new policy makes it hard for marketers to target online advertisements.

22、   The COVID -19 pandemic has changed life as we knew it just a few weeks ago. Millions of people worldwide are now under required or voluntary lockdowns. All public attractions, including museums and aquariums, are closed, and the usually crowded streets of popular tourist destinations are empty. An unexpected silver lining during these challenging times for humans is that many animals are finally getting a chance to leave their normal habitats and move about freely.

The first animals to take advantage of human absence were Annie and Edward, two penguins who live at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. A video released on March 15, 2020, showed the couple eagerly duckwalking around, exploring the aquarium's various exhibits. The video, which instantly became popular, inspired other institutions to share short videos of their four-legged creatures playing as well.

The Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio joined the fun trend on March 16, 2020,with a “Home Safari” live-stream series-the first staring its adorable baby panda,Fiona. “Let us help make your children's hiatus from school fun and educational,” zoo officials announced. “Join us for a Home Safari Online Live each weekday at 3 pm,where we will highlight one of our amazing animals and include an activity you can do from home.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Safari Park has kept their webcams(网络摄像头)rolling, allowing fans to enjoy lovable animals without leaving home. Animals in the wild are also lively as humans stay indoors. The absence of cruise ships is bringing large numbers of dolphins to a port in Cagliari, while groups of wild turkeys are happily walking on the streets of Oakland.

Though the animals indeed appear to be having a good time, the heartwarming videos and images shared on social media, are also bringing much -needed cheer to millions of humans worldwide. Stay strong and healthy! We are all in this together!

23、We often hear friends ask why they should read fiction. There is so much to learn from history, from what is going on at the frontiers of science, and from contemporary studies of human behavior. Why should they spend their scarce "free time" reading fiction, the purpose of which, at best, is only entertainment?

We are disappointed about such comments. Yes, we respond, we do find pleasure in reading fiction. But we also learn much about how to best live our lives in ways that can only be captured by fiction. We recognize that some novels are entertaining, but leave no lasting impression. What makes a novel more than entertainment?

Our answer is that we don't just read great books - they read us as well. The human condition is complex and contradictory, layered like an ice-cream dessert, with flavors mixed among the layers. A great novel reflects that complexity. We may read it several times, as we do with our favorites, and each time it is like finding an old friend and gaining new insights from that friend. We put it down with new understandings of the world around us and, most important, of ourselves.

Let's look at the novel Frankenstein, written in 1818 by Mary Shelley. Frankenstein is not the monster, but a young man seeking out the secrets of the universe. He collects body parts and charges it with life. When the dull yellow eyes open, however, Frankenstein, shocked by what he has done, abandons the creature, which ultimately kills Frankenstein's brother, his bride, and his best friend.

On one level, Frankenstein is entertaining - a good horror story, though a little dated. But Shelley writes more than just that. On a deeper level, her book forces us to ask whether humans reach too far to gain knowledge that is as forbidden as the fruit of the Garden of Eden. This theme, as old as the legend of Prometheus (普罗米修斯),dominates Frankenstein. Shelley, of course, knew nothing of genetic (遗传的)engineering that happens today. She was deeply troubled by what human beings might discover about themselves, and the effects of those discoveries on society. Our reading of great literature can also be enriched by understanding the author's personal interests and anxieties.

【1】How does the author feel about fiction reading?

A.It is a window to a whole new world.

B.It helps us discover the frontiers of science.

C.It offers insight into how to live best lives.

D.It holds some clues to understanding our memory.

【2】Why does the author say great books read us as well?

A.Because they deserve reading several times.

B.Because they lead us to a rich and colorful life.

C.Because they explore humans' complex reality.

D.Because they improve the writer-reader relationship.

【3】What do we know about the novel Frankenstein!

A.It is based on a grand theme.

B.It is a record of a historic event.

C.It is merely a great horror story.

D.It is about the legend of Prometheus.

【4】What is the best title of the text?

A.Why should we read fiction?

B.Can novel reading last long?

C.Read for fun or read for none?

D.Is Frankenstein really entertaining?

24、   In industry and medicine, robots routinely build, break down and inspect things; they also assist in surgery and pharmacies. Neither they nor “social” robots-which are designed to engage with people and to establish an emotional connection-behave like The Jetsons’ maid, Rosie, or other beloved robots of fiction. Even so, expect social robots to become more complicated and popular in the next few years.

Like most robots, social robots use artificial intelligence (AI) to decide how to act on information received through cameras and other sensors. The ability to respond in ways that seem lifelike has been informed by research into such issues as how perceptions (认知) form, what constitutes social and emotional intelligence, and how people understand others’ thoughts and feelings. Advances in AI have enabled designers to translate such psychological and neuroscientific (神经学的) insights into algorithms (演算) that allow robots to recognize voices, faces and emotions; interpret speech and gestures; respond appropriately to complex verbal and nonverbal cues; make eye contact; speak conversationally; and adapt to people’s needs by learning from feedback, rewards and criticisms.

In consequence, social robots are filling an ever expanding variety of roles. A 47-inch humanoid called Pepper (from SoftBank Robotics), for instance, recognizes faces and basic human emotions and engages in conversations via a touch screen in its “chest.” About 15,000 Peppers worldwide perform such services as hotel check-ins, airport customer service, shopping assistance and fast-food checkout. Social robots have particular appeal for assisting the world’s growing elderly population. Japan’s PARO Therapeutic (治疗的) Robot, which looks like a lovely seal (海豹), is meant to stimulate and reduce stress for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other patients. Mabu (Catalia Health) engages patients, particularly the elderly, reminding them to take walks and medication. Social robots are also gaining popularity with consumers as toys. Early attempts to incorporate social behavior in toys, such as Hasbro’s Baby Alive and Sony’s AIBO robotic dog, had limited success. But both are resurging, and the most recent version of AIBO has complicated voice and gesture recognition, can be taught tricks and develops new behaviors based on previous interactions.

Worldwide sales of consumer robots reached an estimated $5.6 billion in 2018, and the market is expected to grow to $19 billion by the end of 2025. This trend may seem surprising given that multiple well-funded consumer robot companies, such as Jibo and Anki, have failed. But a wave of robots is lining up to take the place of defunct robots, including BUDDY (Blue Frog Robotics), a big-eyed mobile device that plays games in addition to acting as a personal assistant and providing home automation and security.

1Paragraph 2 mainly tells us ________.

A.what the features of social robots are

B.what promotes social robots’ engagement with people

C.how algorithms are improved to adapt to people’s needs

D.how psychological and neuroscientific insights are translated

2According to Paragraph 3, social robots ________.

A.have a wide range of applications

B.have the ability to deal with emergencies

C.have a tendency to take the place of humans

D.have successfully gained psychological insight

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Social robots are designed as personal assistants.

B.Robots in industry and medicine need improvement.

C.Consumer robots have been successful all these years.

D.Social robots are popular due to great interactive abilities.

4What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To predict the prospect of social robots.

B.To introduce the advances of social robots.

C.To report the application of AI in social robots.

D.To show the influence of social robots on our life.
