21、When Maria Beall sees trash on the ground, she picks it up with joy. “It's your workout as well as keeping your community clean,” says Beall, a sports exercise physiologist. She and her husband, Mike, recently moved to Richmond's Manchester neighborhood. While walking their dog, she noticed someone had dumped(倾倒)a sofa and a microwave in an alley, and she saw fast-food wrappers(外包装) and plastic bottles on the sidewalks. Beall was concerned about the impact on the environment. So she decided to organize a regular cleanup to keep Manchester beautiful.
Beginning in March, volunteers began meeting at Legend Brewing Co. for a monthly Saturday-morning cleanup. Open to everyone, the effort has attracted 20 to 75 people monthly. On a recent Saturday, volunteers wearing gloves and carrying trash bags were divided into smaller groups, and for two hours, spread across all parts of Manchester.
“I've always found that getting involved with projects like this is a win-win," says Ann Kramer, one of the volunteers, who moved to Manchester in 2019. “I meet great people, and my community gets stronger.”
“I think the cleanup sends a message to new residents that Manchester is a neighborhood that cares,” Kramer adds. “This area is exploding in growth, with many new people moving in each month, so we hope that the regular commitment to ensuring Manchester's streets are clean will be another reason why people would choose Manchester.”
New businesses are also opening here, and some are monthly cleanup sponsors, including Dandelion Health Direct Primary Care. Family physician Joe Fields-Johnson says he opened his practice in Manchester "because of the critical need for primary care access in this neighborhood”. Fields-Johnson says beautiful green spaces and clean neighborhoods benefit people's health.
Beall feels grateful to live in Manchester and appreciates how neighbors come together for the cleanups. “I like the sense of community,” she says. “I'm also hoping it inspires other neighborhoods and that there will be more cleaner neighborhoods, because we're all in this together.”

22、The phone ID flashed, “Emergency Vet”. “Oh no” I whispered. I could not lose Merlin now.
Ron and I had tried to have children for a long time with depressing results. I threw myself into my work. Any maternal feelings I had were spent on Merlin.
I couldn’t wait to get home from work each night. I wanted to pick up that warm bundle of loving fur and nestle him. I wanted to sing “Rock-a-bye Merlin”, as I did every night as he would put his paws around my neck.
Merlin was my comfort especially at times when I wondered if God was listening. But last night something had changed. Not only did I sing “Rock-a-Bye Merlin”, but I asked, “What will I do after you’re gone?”
Although Merlin was 19 years old, a senior in the age of a cat, he didn’t look or act that way. I didn’t want to accept the fact that he was nearing the end of his lifetime. My job at the law firm was so demanding and stressful that I couldn’t imagine getting through the day without Merlin waiting to greet me at home.
I dialed the vet’s number. I asked for my husband but he already left. Then I took a breath and asked the question that no one wants to ask, “Is my Merlin still alive?” The nurse said “yes.”
Ron came home and said that Merlin had almost no red blood cells left. White blood cells were replacing them. Merlin would need expensive transfusions most likely on a monthly basis. We both knew Merlin was running out of time. I asked Ron to drive me to the vet so I could say goodbye to my little boy cat but he was beat tired and it was late. Ron said if Merlin was still alive the next morning then he would take me to the vet.
The next morning I called the vet. Merlin had survived the night.
After driving to the vet, I went into the examining room. The nurse brought Merlin and placed him on an examining table on his side. His eyes were tightly shut. I thought he died already. I carefully edged my hand to reach his body. His body felt warm, but when I spoke his name there was no response. No response to his name or that I was there and that I loved him. I was extremely sad.
In that examining room I felt helpless. I wondered how many people in an examining room felt as helpless as I did.
Feeling driven to prayer I yelled, “God this isn’t good enough. I need to see my Merlin the way I remember him, I need a miracle and I need it now!”
At that moment, God granted a miracle. Merlin’s favorite compliment entered my mind. I said, “Merlin, You are Beautiful and You are Gorgeous, do you hear me?”
One eye opened.
I said “Gotcha”. I kept repeating those words.
Merlin opened the other eye and, one limb at a time, got up. He was waiting for that phrase. He wanted to hear that he was beautiful and gorgeous again.
Then I experienced another miracle.
There was no sound in that examining room until Merlin started walking to me. From out of nowhere, or maybe from heaven, I clearly heard a song we sung in church often: “It Is Well With My Soul.” I remembered thinking, “Yes, it is well with my Soul. I got to see my little boy cat one more time.”
Merlin walked to me. He put his face in mine, which he had never done before. He rubbed a circle around my face twice. Merlin said goodbye with his face and marked me for life.
Ron appeared shocked that Merlin was up and had walked to me. I said to Merlin, “Tell God you are a good boy and how much we love you” and then handed him back to the nurse.
Tears of gratitude poured forth in memory of a miracle. You see for nineteen years God spoke to me through a special cat named “Merlin.” On Merlin’s last day, God proved he heard me when he granted a miracle. That miracle gave me time to say goodbye.

23、 Have you heard of Creative Growth? The Oakland institution offers a professional studio space where adult artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities can create work. It also provides gallery exhibitions, representation, guidance, a community of likeminded artists and a safe space in which to grow. The late Judith Scott, whose artwork lit up the Brooklyn Museum in a retrospective(回顾展)last year, was a Creative Growth artist who suffered from down syndrome(唐氏综合症)and hearing loss.
“It’s the best facility for local adult artists living with disabilities,” Jonah Olson, an artist and former teacher in Creative Growth’s printmaking studio said. “ The amount of work they produce and the quality of it are remarkable.”
Olson, who now lives in Los Angeles, is a member of the band L.A. Takedown. Along with his bandmates, Olson decided to use the opportunity to expose Southern California to lesser known contemporary outsider artists, living and working just a few hours up north.
“I’ve had an interest in outsider art for a long time,” Olson explained. “You make art as a child and the reasons for doing it now, in my case, are no different now from what they were then. It’ s very basic. Intrinsic (本质的). I think that’s what drew me to art made by people with developmental disabilities.”
The show, a survey of the space’s better-known and lesser-known names, loosely revolves(围绕) around themes of art and music. “Not a lot of the recent artwork specifically is about music, but we are grouping the work around the idea of being in the cities of L.A. and Oakland.” Olson said.
The artists of Creative Growth will be on view throughout the month of August, coupled with musical performances and film screenings organized by L.A. Takedown. All proceeds from the month will benefit the artists and space. The money will be used to improve the condition of the studio and for the development of the artists. “L.A. doesn’t really have a place like Creative Growth,” Olson said, discussing his hopes for the show.
【1】What do we know about Creative Growth?
A.It was founded by Judith Scott.
B.It hosts exhibitions of famous artists’ works.
C.It offers professional service to physically disabled people.
D.It provides an artistic environment for disabled adult artists.
【2】Why does Olson like outsider art?
A.It is created by children.
B.It focuses on the art itself.
C.It is different from contemporary art.
D.It shows the feelings of disabled people.
【3】What does the underlined word “proceeds” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Activities. B.Work
C.Profits D.Arrangement
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.An art show brings music along.

24、Around 1975 books were written about strange occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle, a part of the Atlantic Ocean off the southeast coast of the U.S. They told the stories of planes and ships that disappeared for no understandable reason and were never found again. They told about ships which were found undamaged but with no one on them. According to the books, more than 1,000 people disappeared in the Triangle from 1945 to 1975.
According to some writers, there were no natural explanations for many of the disappearances, so they suggested other explanations. For example, some strange and terrible power exists in the Triangle. According to another writer, people from space are living at the bottom of the Atlantic, and sometimes they need human sailors and airmen for their research. These ideas were not scientific, but they were good advertisements. The books about the Bermuda Triangle were immediate successes.
However, the books give little evidence to support their unusual ideas. In addition, they ignore at least three important facts that suggest natural reasons for many of the occurrences. First, messages from some of the ships and aircraft which later disappeared give us evidence of problems with navigational instruments. Similar stories are told by officers who were on duty on planets and ships which finally managed to come through the Triangle without disaster. Second, the weather in this part of the Atlantic Ocean is very unpredictable. Dangerous storms that can cause problems even for experienced pilots and sailors can begin suddenly and without warning. Finally, the Bermuda Triangle is very large, and many people, both experienced and inexperienced, sail and fly through it. Perhaps the figure of 1,000 deaths in thirty years shocks some people, but, in fact, the figure is not unusual for an area of ocean that is so large and that is crossed by so many ships.
The evidence which exists, therefore, supports one conclusion about Bermuda Triangle: We do not need stories about people from space or strange unnatural powers to explain the disappearances.
【1】What was strange about the occurrences in the Bermuda according to Paragraph 1?
A. Ships survived but with no passengers on board.
B. Not only ships but planes went missing as well.
C. There were as many as 1,000 deaths from 1945 to 1975.
D. They happened across none other than the Atlantic waters.
【2】Why were the books about Bermuda Triangle unscientific?
A. The books were written by unknown writers.
B. Nearly no supporting evidence was given.
C. The books were written as advertisements.
D. The writers pursued immediate success.
【3】What reason for the disappearances may the author agree with?
A. The sailors and airmen were taken away by strange species.
B. People aboard could not stand the weather and died of diseases.
C. The sailors and airmen were to blame as they were inexperienced.
D. Navigational instruments going wrong caused the sink or the crash.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Bermuda Triangle Disappearances, Mystery Or Misreading?
B. The Deadly Problems With Machines Of Last Century
C. One Hundred Lives Lost In Thirty Years!
D. New Discoveries In The Bermuda Triangle
