二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   My brother and I were like most people, I imagine, who find themselves trying to do the right things for a parent suffering from the symptoms of dementia (痴呆). Though there was useful advice available from various online sources, nothing prepared us for the reality or the effects the symptoms had upon Mum's loving, kind, caring nature.

The greatest shock for me was seeing Mum being violent and aggressive with a carer. At times the aggression was directed at me too and I never really knew what to expect as Mum could go from being a loving Mother to this violent stranger in a flash. It was as though Mum had been possessed at times and all I could do was to constantly attempt to distract her from her fears at any moment.

One of the many challenging aspects of the dementia symptoms is that the sufferer often doesn't know that they're ill. In Mum's case, the main thing was to carry on as though everything was just as it always was. Many were the nights where she'd be convinced that friends and relatives were coming round for a party and she'd rush around setting the table, preparing snacks and getting everything ready until she was exhausted. I got to see first hand just how the anxieties that came with the illness would really stay with her until she fell asleep.

Mum longed for reminders of her early life in Liverpool and once travelling there had become too difficult, we found great comfort in local history books and a DVD about many of the places and landmarks Mum remembered from her childhood.

I learned to go with whatever experience Mum was having. I would always be with her. If I could pass on any guidance for those about to care for a loved one, it is the above I found that really helps.

A.Her mother's longing for her childhood photos.

B.The sudden distinct shift in her mother's temper.

3Why does the author tell the story of Mum's preparing for a party?

A.To prove her mum is not aware of her illness at all.

B.To explain how to help her mum come over her anxiety.

C.To regret that she failed to help her mum with her problem.

D.To look for a better medical treatment for her mum.

4What may the author suggest to those who have a parent with dementia?

A.Hard work pays off. B.Where there is a will, there is a way.

C.Company is the best medicine. D.Look before you leap.

22、   You’ve heard the old advice that skipping meals is a sure-fire way to ruin a weight loss plan, but a new study presented this week at the annual Obesity Society Meeting in New Orleans suggests that perhaps we've overlooked the benefits of selective fasting. According to the research, eating during a smaller window of time each day and skipping your evening meal could have a positive health effect.

The study concluded that overweight individuals who ate during the day and fasted during the evening reported fewer hunger swings and burned more fat at night, WebMD reported. However, although this diet plan results in more fat burned in the evenings, it did not seem to increase fat burning overall. Due to this, at this moment it’s still unclear as to how this eating schedule can affect general weight loss.

“At this point, we are not sure whether or not total fat burning is increased,” study lead author Courtney Peterson told Medical Daily in a recent email. “We will need to do a larger study to find out for certain whether or not time-restricted feeding improves fat burning.”

Still, although the results do not indicate a clear association between nighttime fasting and weight loss, they are still important for the world of nutrition. For example, Peterson told Medical Daily that she was surprised to find that participants did not report being hungrier than average, or have above-average swings in hunger levels, despite fasting daily for 18 hours.

“So we overturned the belief that fasting for longer period each day when the same number of total calories are eaten makes a person hungrier,”wrote Peterson.

While the effects of fasting and time-restricted feeding have been studied and proven to work in a rodent(贴齿动物)modelresearch on human subjects is still in its early stages. For this reasonPeterson explained that it is far too early to saywith factual evidence as backingthat time-restricted feeding will improve weight loss in humans. StillPeterson explained that practicing this eating behavior does have obvious benefitssuch as reducing overall food intakeand suggested that practicing time restricted eating a few times a week could be both practicable and healthy.

“It could be used for short-term goals or longer-term goals"concluded Peterson." As far as we knowit is safe for adultsalthough pregnant women and children should not try it.”

23、   Ronald Reagan ever said, “It’s true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?” To some extent, extra effort seems to be self-defeating. Studies suggest that, after 50 hours a week, employee productivity falls sharply.

But that doesn’t stop some managers from demanding that workers stay chained to their desk for long periods. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, recently praised the “996” model, where employees work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 6 days a week, as a “huge blessing”. Apparently, presenteeism (出勤主义) is the curse of the modern office worker.

There will be days when you do not have much to do: perhaps because you are waiting for someone else in a different department, or a different company, to respond to a request. As the clock ticks past 5 pm, there may be no purpose in staying at your desk. But you can see your boss hard at work and, more importantly, they can see you. So you make an effort to look busy.

Some of this may be a self-continuing cycle. If bosses do not like to go home before their employees, and employees fear leaving before their bosses, everyone is trapped. Staff may feel that they will not get a pay rise, or a promotion, if they are not seen to be putting in maximum effort. This is easily confused with long hours. Managers, who are often no good at judging employees’ performance, use time in the office as a measure. The consequence is often wasted effort. We pretend to work and managers pretend to believe us. Rather than work hard, you try to make bosses think that you are. Leaving a jacket on your office chair, walking around purposefully with a notebook and sending out emails at odd hours are three of the best-known tricks. After a while this can result in collective self-delusion that this pretence is actual work.

But presenteeism has more serious consequences. It is perhaps most common in Japan, where people attend the office even when they are in discomfort. In doing so, they are doing neither themselves nor their employers any favours. As well as reducing productivity, this can increase medical expenses for the employer. According to a study in the Journal of Occupation and Environmental Medicine, these costs can be six times higher for employers than the costs of absenteeism among workers. Those workers were more likely to experience greater pain and to suffer from depression.

In the evolution of humanity, presenteeism is a recent phenomenon. In the industrial era, workers were paid not for their output but for their time, and were required to clock in and out. But modern machinery like smartphones and laptops is portable. Turning an office into a prison, with prisoners allowed home for the evenings, does nothing for the creativity that is increasingly demanded of office workers as routine tasks are automated. To be productive you need presence of mind, not being present in the flesh.

1What can we learn from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?

A. Employees often have to work extra hours.

B. Extra effort improves employees’ productivity.

C. “996” model is well received around the world.

D. Both bosses and employees are devoted to their jobs.

2What does the underlined “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. Hoping to get a pay rise. B. Going home after the boss.

C. Putting in maximum effort. D. Judging employees’ performance.

3Which of the following is one the results of long-time presenteeism?

A. Reducing medical costs of employees.

B. Making employees more hard-working.

C. Increasing the competition among employees.

D. Worsening employees’ physical and mental condition.

4What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Employees should be treated as prisoners.

B. Productivity can’t be measured by presenteeism now.

C. Office tasks usually can’t be carried out automatically.

D. Office workers should be allowed to be absent-minded.

24、From the lush green hill you can see Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, in the distance. Populations of deer, rabbits and turtle live here. The air is stinky and the only signs that we are standing above a 24-metre (79 feet) deep landfill are the methane gas pipes rising from the grass.

Ljubljana is the first European capital to commit to going zero-waste. But fifteen years ago, all of its refuse went straight to landfill. “And that is expensive,” says Nina Sankovic of Voka Snaga, the city’s waste management company. “It takes up space and you’ re throwing away resources.”

So the city decided to change course.

It began in 2002 with separate collection of paper, glass and packaging in Roadside container stands. Four years later the city began collecting biodegradable waste door to door; separate collection of biowaste is set to become mandatory across Europe in 2023, but Ljubljana was nearly two decades ahead of the curve.

In 2013, every doorstep in the city received bins for packaging and paper waste. And, most controversially, scheduled collections of the residual waste were cut by half-forcing people to separate their rubbish more efficiently.

The results have been impressive. In 2008, the city recycled only 29.3% of its waste and was lagging behind the rest of Europe. Today that figure is 68%, and its landfill receives almost 80% less rubbish, putting it at the top of there cycling leader board of EU capitals. The Slovenian capital now produces only 115kg of residual waste per capital annually(the European city with the lowest figure is the much smaller Treviso, Italy, at 59kg).
