21、King Canute couldn’t stop the ocean’s tide from rolling in — can Africa hold back the desert? That’s certainly what the continent is tying to do with its proposed “Great Green Wall”, 800km (almost 500 miles) worth of trees that officials hope will stop the advancement of the Sahara Desert, which has been rapidly expanding southward.
The idea was introduced in the 1970s when the once-rich region turned barren (贫瘠的) due to climate change and intensive land use. But it’s not a new idea; China has its own desert vegetation project to hold back the Gobi Desert! Thanks to the Chinese plan, the African project aims to plant 100 million hectares of trees by 2030 across the entire Africa. The initiative is a decade in, and around 15% completed, and there have already been benefits for many communities and wildlife. It’s bringing life back to the continent’s degraded landscapes at an unprecedented scale, providing not only food security and jobs but a reason to stay for the millions who live along its path.
The creators of the wall hope it will bring an urgently needed solution to the threats facing the African continent, creating 10 million jobs in rural areas, as well as preventing 250 million tons of carbon. The initiative is Africa-driven, which for those on the continent, is vital, and may hold the key to success. “The Great Green Wall…is about ownership, and that has been the failure of development aid because people were never identified with it,” said Elvis Paul Tangam, African Union Commissioner for the Sahara and Sahel Great Green Wall Initiative.“But this time they identify. This is the very thing of us!”
The wall may seem like a moonshot, but all the best ideas usually are. As Thomas Sankara, former president of Burkina Faso said in 1985, “You can not carry out fundamental change without a certain degree of madness. The courage to turn your back on the old formulas, the courage to invent the future.”

22、The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. That was not so bad—what really troubled me was that before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. 【1】 Anyway, who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. 【2】 Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. 【3】
On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. 【4】 The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I could hardly take my eyes away from that painting! 【5】 It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.
A.In it, a woman was reading to a child.
B.That felt almost as bad as being in school.
C.The two paintings were so similar to each other!
D.I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made!
E.I was immediately attracted by the strange way of painting faces.
F.Staring at those pictures, I still couldn’t see what was so great about art.
G.Unusual styles of art always attracted my brother, but I was not interested.
23、People have speculated (思索) for centuries about a future without work. Some imagine that the coming work-free world will be defined by inequality: A few wealthy people will own all the capital, and the masses will struggle in a wasteland. A different prediction holds that without jobs to give their lives meaning future people will simply become lazy and depressed.
But it doesn’t necessarily follow from findings like these that a world without work would be filled with dissatisfaction. Such visions are based on the downsides of being unemployed in a society built on the concept of employment. In the absence of work, a society designed with other ends in mind could provide strikingly different circumstances for the future of labor and leisure.
These days, spare time is relatively rare for most workers. “When I come home from a hard day’s work, I often feel tired.” says John Danaher, a lecturer at the National University of Ireland, adding, “In a world in which I don’t have to work. I might feel rather different — perhaps different enough to throw myself into a hobby with the enthusiasm usually reserved for professional matters.”
Daniel Everett, an anthropologist (人类学家) at Bentley University studied a group of hunter-gathers in the Amazon called the Piranha for years. According to Everett, while some might consider hunting and gathering as work, hunter-gatherers don’t. “They think of it as fun.” he says. “They don’t have a concept of work the way we do.”
Everett described a typical day for the Piraha: A man might get up, spend a few hours fishing, have a barbecue, and play until the evening. Does this relaxing life lead to the depression and purposelessness seen among so many of today’s unemployed? “I’ve never seen anything like depression there, except people who are physically ill.” Everett says. While many may consider work necessary for human life, work as it exists today is a relatively new invention in the course of human culture. “We think it’s bad to just sit around with nothing to do,” says Everett. “For the Piraha, it’s quite a desirable state.”
【1】How does the author introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A.By comparing wealthy people with the majority.
B.By giving a definition to inequality in society.
C.By listing different predictions of a work-free world
D.By picturing a lazy and depressed atmosphere.

B.people’s work-free future life will be full of charm
C.people don’t know how to balance work and life

24、We interviewed two people, one who went from the country to the city and one who did the opposite.
Janet Lincoln is a salesgirl who moved to St. Louis five years ago. Here’s what Janet told us:
“Five years ago I used to live in a small town called Lemon Falls. I grew up and went to high school there. After I graduated I worked in a supermarket. Lemon Falls had a population of about 800 people, and I knew every single one of them. They all knew everything about me, too. You couldn’t do anything without everyone in town knowing about it. The first chance I got I moved to St. Louis and I love it. I don’t know as many people now as I used to, but that’s OK. I have a few good friends, and I see them when I want to. I kind of like being anonymous. I’d never go back to Lemon Falls.”
Troy Henson had the opposite experience. He and his wife, Darla, and their two children moved from St. Louis to Bloomfield three years ago. Here’s what Troy told us:
“The best thing we ever did was get out of St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong; St. Louis is as good a place as any other city, I suppose — if you like cities, that is. We don’t. Both Darla and I grew up in St. Louis. We met at college and got married. Then the kids came along and life got difficult. We didn’t know any of our neighbors. We both had good jobs, but it always seemed like there was never enough money. That all changed when we moved to Bloomfield. I don’t make as much money as I used to, but then we don’t have as many expenses as we did. We know our neighbors. Life is good. We’d never leave Bloomfield.”
【1】What troubled Janet when she was in Lemon Falls?
A.She had no friends.
B.There was no privacy.

D.knows little about his new neighbors
【4】What is Troy’s opinion on living in Bloomfield?
A.It is a little boring.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day last December, Flores Gonzalez, the mother of a four-year old girl Luna, came up with the idea of having the girl send a letter to Santa by balloon, saying that Santa would grab the balloon while he flew through the air on his sled.
The girl was excited. Flores helped her compose the letter, writing down all the things she dreamed Santa might bring her, and then put the notes into festive red balloons. Flores then took her outside to release the wish to the universe. “Bye, balloon!” the girl called waving as the balloon floated away, sailing above the trees and into the sky.
Some days later, Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana when something drew his attention. Caught in a fallen tree, it looked like litter. But Bamburg couldn’t help picking it up. “God just told me” he said.
As Bamburg approached, he saw that the object was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child’s Christmas wish list.
“Dear Santa” the handwritten note read. “My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll, puppy, My Little Pony. With love Luna.”
Bamburg’s heart pounded in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scene. “Years ago,” he says,“classes at school released balloons with notes. I’ve always wanted to find one.” He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he was going to make Luna’s wish come true too. He just wasn’t sure how. Liberal, Kansas, is more than 350 miles from Grand Cane, Louisiana. But Bamburg’s wife, Lee Ann, was not discouraged by the distance. As a keen Internet user, she had seen other people find all sorts of connections on the Internet and thought it might help her husband find Luna.
