26、Zhang Chaofan, 24, was born without a left hand and forearm. Her father named her Chaofan, which means being extraordinary, as he hoped she would live a wonderful life despite (尽管) her disability.
As a child, Zhang dreamed of having a pair of hands. After she entered primary school, Zhang realized she would never have a left hand. At that time, painting helped her win confidence in life. Zhang performed well academically in high school. At the same time, her love of painting didn’t become weak and she dreamed of setting up her own art school. She won the school’s top scholarship every year.

27、A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.
A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.
There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar (奇怪的, 异常的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their cases were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl -friend.
No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.

28、As you are growing and changing, you have more responsibilities and also more freedom to spend time with other people. While you may feel ready to make your own decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find you are arguing with your parents more than you used to. The reason why your parents do this is that they care about you and want to protect you from danger.
Here are some tips for how to avoid and handle arguments with your parents:
【1】Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able to tell what they will say yes or no to before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you feel and suggest what you think are right rules. Your parents may be willing to listen to your ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.
【2】Try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your parents that you are responsible and mature(成熟的) by talking instead of shouting.
【3】Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount of time they spend with their friends. Communicate with each other and make some special family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend at home. Suggest activities that your whole family will enjoy together such as going on a hike, taking a bike ride, or going to the beach.
【1】Your parents limit your activity mainly because they ______.
A.are worried about your safety

29、Four days after Dad’s 67th birthday, he had a heart attack. He was lucky—he survived. But something inside him had died. His enthusiasm for life was gone.
My husband and I asked Dad to live with us on our small farm, hoping the fresh air would help him adjust. Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated.
One day I read an article about a nursing home. Several depressed patients’ attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given dogs. So, I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. As soon as I got there, a pointer’s(指示犬)eyes caught my attention. They watched me calmly.
A staff member said, “He got here two weeks ago and we’ve heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.” I turned to the man in horror. “You mean you’re going to kill him?”
“Ma’am,” he said gently. “We don’t have room for every unclaimed dog.”
The pointer’s calm brown eyes awaited my decision. “I’ll take him,” I said.
Glancing at the dog, Dad wrinkled his face and turned back towards the house. Then, suddenly, the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He sat down in front of Dad. Dad’s anger melted, and soon he was hugging the animal.
It was the beginning of a warm friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne. Together they spent long hours walking down dusty lanes and relaxing on the banks of streams.
Dad’s bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne went on to make many friends. Then, late one night two years later, I felt Cheyenne’s cold nose searching through my bed covers. He had never come into our bedroom before at night. I ran into my father’s room and found that he had passed away.
Two days later, my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad’s bed. As I buried him near their favorite stream, I silently thanked the dog for restoring Dad’s peace of mind.
【1】Why did Dad criticize everything the author did?
A. He didn’t like his daughter’s farm.
B. The disease took away his interest in life.
C. The state of his illness worsened.
D. His daughter couldn’t do things well.
【2】What was Dad’s attitude when he first saw the dog?

C. Excited. D. Satisfied.
【3】What was the dog’s greatest help to Dad?
A. It accompanied him on his walk.
B. It helped him make many friends.
C. It brought peace of mind back to him.
D. It improved the relationship between him and his daughter.

32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My Parents and I had been planning my brothers’ birthday party since the beginning of March. Johnny would be six years old in two days. My mom was going to bake a special chocolate cake. I wonder what I can do to make my brother’s birthday special.
I knew my parents had already bought a present for me to give to Johnny, but I wanted to buy him something I had chosen myself and with the money I had saved. After giving it some thoughts, I wanted to buy him the paint-by-number kit (数字涂色小套装) I had seen at the store around the corner.
I decided to empty my coin jar and see how much money I had saved. However, I was disappointed to find there was much less than I had imagined. “I only have about three dollars,” I said to myself. The set cost more than I have saved.
Suddenly a “great” idea came to me. I went into my parents’ bedroom where my dad kept loose change in a box. I carefully counted out what I needed to make up the difference. I’m sure Dad won’t mind just this once, I thought.
However, I was soon overcome by guilt (负罪感). Even though there was no one else in the bedroom, I felt like I was being watched. Mom was always telling us about the importance of honesty. Maybe my plan wasn’t such a great idea after all, I thought.
However, I ran to the store. Once I got there, I took the paint-by-number kit from the shelf.
“Can I help you, young lady?” the saleswoman asked.
“No. I’m just looking, thank you.” I said.
“That’s a really nice paint kit. We sell a lot of them and, as you can see, that’s the last one. ” she said.
