二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、You can remember the face, but can’t put a name to it.【1】But researchers say it is often easier to remember someone’s name than what they look like.

Twenty-four volunteers were shown 40 pictures of strangers, paired with random names. They were given time to memorize the faces and names before being tested on which they thought they had seen before.【2】When they were shown a different picture of the same person, the participants could recall only 64 per cent of faces, according to the study, led by the University of York.

【3】When people were shown famous people, they also remembered their names more accurately than their photographs. The study suggests that, while many people may be bad at remembering names, they are likely to be even worse at remembering faces. 【4】We used to think that it is very easy to make out the familiar faced from a group of people.

Study also indicates that remembering names gets harder with age. It may lead to many uncomfortable moments for middle-aged people when they run into acquaintances. 【5】

Much worse with time going by, aged people with much worse memory will be even harder to well match faces with their names.

But to study whether names are harder to recall than faces, the researchers, whose findings are published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, used a “fair test” where the participants were presented with strangers’ names and faces.

A.Few of us used to think that remembering is much easier.

B.Many of us have been caught in this embarrassing situation.

C.This will surprise many people as it is against our initial understanding.

D.The participants could remember 85 % of the names but only 73 % of the faces.

E.Therefore, old people is a group of people who cannot remember faces or names.

F.So middle-aged tend to be in a situation where they think they have a very bad memory.

G.That may be because faces are only recognized visually, while names can be written or heard.

27、Not everyone feels a connection with their cultural heritage, but many people do. What is it about cultural heritage that draws these people to it? Some may think traditions are old and no longer relevant, and that they are unnecessary during these modern times. But for others, exploring cultural heritage offers a variety of benefits.

Culture can give people a connection to certain social values, beliefs, religions and customs. It allows them to identify with others of similar mindsets and backgrounds. Cultural heritage can provide a sense of unity and belonging within a group and allows us to better understand previous (先前) generations and the history of where we come from.

Another benefit that comes from preserving cultural heritage as a whole is the communal support. Those that identify strongly with a certain heritage are often more likely to help out others in that same community. Real estate mogul (房地产大亨) Carl Mattone and his family are often sighted at fundraisers for local Catholic schools. Mattone was raised Catholic and attended Holy Cross High School in New York.

Cultural heritage is made up of many things large and small. We can see it in the buildings, townscapes, and even in archaeological remains. Culture can be perceived through natural sources as well: the agriculture and landscapes associated with it. It is preserved through books, artifacts, objects, pictures, photographs, art, and oral tradition. Cultural heritage is in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the religions we follow, and the skills we learn. Sometimes we can touch and see what makes up a culture; other times it is intangible.

【1】What can we learn about cultural heritage in paragraph 2?

A.It is unnecessary in modern times.

B.It can offer people a sense of belonging.

28、Have you ever wondered why you spend so much of your life sleeping? Just like electricity charges the battery of a mobile phone, sleep recharges your body and your mind.

Sleep is a natural and temporary state of rest, brought on by your “body clock”—a system inside your brain that helps you sleep at night and wake up in the morning. Even though you are not aware of your surroundings when you sleep, your brain remains active.

Humans could not function without sleep. According to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, sleep helps people learn by strengthening their memories. It has physical benefits, too—like maintaining a healthy weight and boosting your immune system. Too little sleep can make you tired and bad-tempered. Your brain becomes foggy, making it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. That’s why you may be told to “sleep on” a choice you’re uncertain about.

Dreams usually occur during a stage of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In REM, the eyes move quickly back and forth and brain activity increases. Scientists are not sure why people dream. Some say it is a process that helps store memories; others say it helps people process emotions. Everybody dreams for around two hours a night but not everyone can remember them.

Doctors say sleep is especially important for children and teenagers because their minds and bodies are still developing. Most adults need around eight hours of sleep, but Mandy Gurney, who runs the Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic, says that children need more. “An eight-year-old requires around 10 to 10-and-a-half hours of sleep each night, dropping to around nine hours a night in your teen years.” A good night’s sleep will get your day off to a great start. As Mahatma Gandhi, who was an Indian politician and activist, was quoted as saying, “When I wake up, I am reborn.”

29、My mother has a dining table which sits right in the middle of her dining room. It was once buried beneath piles of papers—magazines, articles, copies of schedules for vacations she took back in the 1990s, and baby pictures of grand children who are now paying off their college loans.

My brother Ross and I recently flew to New York to visit my mother. “Mom, why don’t we go through all that stuff?” Ross said. “No. Don’t touch it!” My mother said. The next afternoon, when she couldn’t find a bill she needed, Ross suggested it might be put somewhere in the dining room and that we find it together. “Besides,” he said, “all those papers are clearly stressing you out.” However, my mother just said, “Are you boys hungry?” And then she seemed to have lost herself in deep thought.

On our last night there, my mother walked up to us with a small pile of unopened mails, which she had collected at the western edge of the dining table, and said, “Help me go through these.” “Sure,” I said. When we had succeeded in separating wheat from chaff (谷壳), I asked, “Would you want to deal with another little pile of papers?”

My mother led the way, walking into the dining room the way an animal manager might be while entering a cage with tigers in it. Ross and I came in behind her and suddenly he reached for a pile of the papers on one side of the table. “No!” my mother said sharply. “Let’s start at the other end. That’s where the older stuff is.” Finally, we threw 95 percent of the stuff into paper shopping bags. Then I asked what she wanted us to do with them, she surprised us all by saying, “Put them in the incinerator (垃圾焚化炉).”

When I returned home, inspired by the visit to my mother, I sorted out my own accumulated(累积的) piles of papers, sold or gave away half of my possessions, and moved into a smaller house. It seems that my life has been cheaper and easier since then. And it proves that a small change does make a big difference.

【1】What did the mother ask her children to do with these unopened mails?

A.To burn them.

B.To read them for her.

C.To collect them together.

D.To pick out the important ones among them.

【2】When the mother walked into the dining room, she was________.

C.impatient

D.careful

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards his mother’s cleaning up the dining table?

D.Unknown.

【4】What might be the best title of the passage?

A.The precious mail

B.A visit to my mother

C.A happy family reunion

D.The lesson of the dining table

三、完形填空(共1题,共 5分)

30、Four years ago, Chris Nagele did what many other technology CEO have done before—he moved his team into an open concept office.

His staff had been working from home, but he wanted everyone to be together. It quickly became clear, though, that Nagele had made a huge mistake. Everyone was distracted, productivity(生产率) suffered and the nine employees were unhappy, not to mention Nagele himself.

In April 2015, about three years after moving into the open office, Nagele moved the company into a 10,000-square foot office where everyone now has their own space — complete with closing doors.

Numerous companies have accepted the open office. But we’re 15% less productive, we have great trouble concentrating.

Since moving, Nagele himself has heard from others in technology who say they long for the closed office lifestyle. It’s unlikely that the open office concept will go away anytime soon, but some companies are following Nagele’s example and making a return to private spaces.

There’s one big reason we’d all love a space with four walls and a door that shuts: focus. The truth is, we can’t multitask(多任务化) and small distractions can cause us to lose focus for upwards of 20 minutes.

What’s more, certain open spaces can negatively impact our memory. We retain(保留) more information when we sit in one spot, says Sally Augustin, an environmental and design psychologist in La Grange Park, Illinois. It’s not so obvious to us each day, but we offload(卸下) memories — often little details — into our surroundings, she says.

Beside the cheaper cost, one main argument for the open workspace is that it increases teamwork. However, it’s well documented(记载) that we rarely brainstorm brilliant ideas when we’re just talk casually in a crowd.

1How did Nagele feel three years after moving into the new office?

A. He felt satisfied with it   B. He felt doubtful about it

C. He regretted his decision   D. He was confused about it

2What made Nagele more the company in April 2015 again?

A. The suggestions from his friends   B. The cheaper cost of the new office

C. The complaints from his employees   D. The negative results of the open office

3What can we learn about offices from the text?

A. The majority of US companies choose open offices

B. Nagele influenced some companies to move offices

C. Many US companies are moving into private offices

D. Open offices will soon be replaced by traditional ones

4What will happen when we work in an open office according to the text?

A. We will retain more information   B. We will become more productive

C. We will obtain more brilliant ideas   D. We will have trouble concentrating
