 (2014杭州)

How quickly can you count from one to ten?Do you use ten different words to do it?Can you do it in English,or do you have to use your first?language?Do you count on your fingers? Many

people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true.

People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people begin counting with their first finger, which they extend or stick out. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb(拇指)to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten.In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way,a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.

Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers.A group of scientists studied aboriginal(土著的)people in Australia. There people dont have hand movements to stand for numbers. They dont even have words for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers.

In a similar study, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered that people of the Piraha tribe(部落)in northwestern Brazil dont have words for numbers such as“one”or“three”.They are not able to say“five trees”or“ten trees”but can say“some trees”.more trees”.or“many trees”.Professor Edward Gibson said that most people believe that everyone knows how to count,“but here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but its not useful in their culture,so theyve never picked it up.”

Although all humans are able to understand quantities(数量),not all languages have numbers and not all people use counting.Number words in a certain language are a result of people needing numbers in their daily lives. Now we know that people have different ideas about numbers and math, too.

【1】The writer begins with the four questions in order to________.

A.make a survey

It was 9:15 as Marie hurried into the office building; her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day. Once inside the lobby (大厅), she had to stand in the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked “King Enterprises”, she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks ago when she had the interview with Mr King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees(雇员)were just standing around chatting and smoking. At the end of the room, somebody must have just told a funny joke, she thought, because there was a loud of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Then Marie realized that the day’s work in the office began just before Mr King arrived. 27、“My dear Mr Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let (出租) at last?”

Mr Bennet replied that he had not.

“But it is,” returned she, “for Mrs Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”

Mr Bennet made no answer.

“Do not you want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently

“You want to tell me, and I have no objection (反对) to hearing it.”

This was invitation enough.

“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune (财富) from the north of England; that he came down on Monday to see the place, and was so satisfied with it that he agreed immediately with Mr Morris, the owner of Netherfield, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”

“What is his name?”

“Bingley.”

“Is he married or single?”

“Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; 4 or 5,000 a year. What a fine thing for our girls! It is probable that he may fall in love with one of them, and so you must visit him as soon as he comes.”

“I see no chance for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which

perhaps will be still better; for, as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr Bingley might like you the best of all.”

“But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood.”

“It is more than I can be sure, I assure (向……保证) you.”

“But consider your daughters. Sir William and Lady Lucas have decided to go, for in general, you know they visit no new comers. Indeed you must go, for it will be impossible for us to visit him, if you do not.”
