24、WHEN a woman took the seat beside me on a plane, I felt uncomfortable. She had to lower herself slowly, squeezing (挤压) her body into the small space.

“My name is Kelly. I’m from Canada. Where are you from?” She waved a hand in front of my face. “China,” I said as I shook her hand unhappily.

Kelly kept talking to me. She was very thoughtful. When we were served drinks and meals, she made sure that I had enough room in my seat.

“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable with my elephant size!” she said sincerely. I couldn’t help but let down my guard.

As we talked, I was surprised by her wise words. She had read many books and was very smart.

I asked her if she ever thought about losing some weight.

“Aren’t you worried about the diseases that come with being overweight?”

“Not at all. I eat healthy and walk regularly,” she said. “I believe in my heart, the people who get diseases are the ones who worry. You see advertisements from exercise centers that read, ‘Free yourself from your extra baggage, so you are free to be yourself.’ You’re free only if you’re comfortable with who you are!”

25、Many people begin to use pencils from an early age. There are many kinds of pencils: some have erasers on top; some are colorful. You may have used many kinds of them for many years, but do you know the history of pencils?

Many years ago, people in Egypt used lead () to write. Now pencils are made from graphite (石墨) instead of lead. In 1564, people found that graphite could leave black marks. At first, people used it to make marks on their sheep. Later they used the graphite to write. They thought it was lead. Graphite left a blacker mark than lead, but it was not strong enough so it needed something to hold it.

In 1565, Conrad Gesner first put graphite into something to hold it. Later, in the 1600s, German people mixed graphite with some other things and used them for writing. Later, France couldn’t get pencils from both the English and the Germans, so Nicholas Jacques Conte began to make pencils. In France, there was little graphite, so he mixed graphite with clay (粘土).

In 1812, William Munroe made the first American wood pencils. Later, a man put a small eraser on top of a pencil. A new kind of pencil was born.

26、   Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry”. This sentence has become such a common that it has taken on a lot of meanings.

Sorry means to apologize (道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a mother language speaker and as a student of foreign language.

But in Britain, it take on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this situation: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man walks into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because he isn’t looking at where he is going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.

It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict (冲突). So to calm the situation soon, British people will apologize to each other.

Sometimes it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. In Britain, sorry doesn’t always mean exactly what you think. Some of my friends say it at restaurants. As they ask the waiter, “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter.

1How many meanings of “sorry” are the passage mentioned but apologize?

A.Three. B.Two. C.Only one. D.Four.

4The restaurant example shows that “sorry” can be used to ________.

A.apologize to a waiter B.explain what you’re thinking about

C.calm a situation down D.ask a waiter to bring something

5What might be a good title for this story?

A.“I’m sorry” is more than just an apology. B.Traditional British manners.

C.Finding a way out of a difficult situation. D.How to best catch others’ attention.

27、Fairy tale(童话) fiction or not?

One hot debate topic from I Can I Bibi (《奇葩说》) has become popular on Weibo: Should parents tell their children that fairy tales are fake(假的)? Some people think we shouldn’t. Fairy tales give kids hope and teach life lessons. But others think that children need the ability to distinguish (区分) real from fake, and this role is best played by their parents. What’s your opinion?

YES

Hu Enqi, 16

There is no doubt that the world of fairy tales is beautiful, but the real world is cruel (残酷的). If children are always deep in fairy tales, they might not adjust(调节) themselves to society. That’s why there are so many “giant babies” in society. It is parents’ duty to tell children that beauty and darkness are coexistent(共存的). They need to be stronger to adapt to (适应) society.

Li Ziyi, 16

It’s important to tell kids the wisdom in fairy tales, not whether or not they’re fake. If I’m a parent, I will tell my kids: “Dear, the Queen’s poisoned apple is fake, but in our daily lives, fake apples may be many other seductions (诱惑) that you need to be careful of.” Fairy tales can never solve all problems. After all, dangers are always present in both fairy tales and reality (现实).

NO

Yuan Siyi, 16

Not every fairy tale is fake — they’re from our lives. The essence (本质) of fairy tales is to teach children the most basic truths based on the real world. The content of fairy tales is not meaningless. Parents could look on them as partners to children when they grow up. Children will understand the truth step by step.

Hu Pei, 16

As a kid bathed in fairy tales, I don’t want to be told that they are fake. Fairy tales get kids to read, help shape their world outlook, encourage their imaginations and give them entertainment. Even if parents tell the kids the cruel reality, they may miss the point. Instead, they may be filled with fear of the future and the world, which is not our purpose.

【1】According to the passage, “the giant babies” are ___________.

A.those babies who can’t grow up

B.those babies who are big in shape

C.those adults who can adapt to society well

D.those adults who can’t distinguish real from fake

【2】According to Li Ziyi, ___________.

A.we shouldn’t tell children fairy tales are fake

B.some fairy tales have wisdom while others don’t

C.there are many dangers in different shapes in reality

D.“poisoned apples” needn’t be afraid of because they are fake

【3】From the passage, we can know _________.

A.in fairy tales everything is beautiful and good

B.fairy tales can give kids hope and teach life lessons

C.fairy tales have nothing to do with the real world

D.fairy tales mainly need to tell kids cruelty of reality
