21、   Popularly known as the “Oriental Hawaii,” Sanya in South China’s Hainan province is considered as one of the best diving resorts in the South Pacific Ocean.

The followings are the top five places for diving in the city.

Wuzhizhou Island

Regarded as the best place in Hainan province for underwater diving, it is one of the few islands in the world without rocks or pebbles.

The island covers an area of 1.48 square kilometers and is in an irregular butterfly shape. The sea around the island is clear and transparent, providing a visibility of 6 to 27 meters.

Yalong Bay

The underwater world at Yalong Bay is one of the earliest diving bases in Sanya.

It is thought as one of the best scenic spots in China to carry out undersea tourism, with the world's largest and most complete soft coral. Its beautiful blue water has a visibility of 7 to 9 meters.

Xidao Island

Xidao Island, the largest of a series of small islands in Sanya, is shaped like a turtle living in the tropical area.

Located 8 nautical miles off the coast, the island enjoys idyllic surroundings of rocky caves and an interior filled with palm trees. It also boasts crystal clear waters with a wide array of marine life and extensive coral reefs to explore.

Dadonghai Bay

Embraced by hills on three sides, it is a crescent-shaped bay located about 4 km southeast of the downtown area of Sanya.

It is also richly endowed by nature with vernal sunshine, soft breezes as well as fine sand. Though the water here is not as clear as that in Yalong Bay and Wuzhizhou Island, this diving spot is easier to get to.

Fenjiezhou Island

Nicknamed the Sleeping Beauty Island, it is a national 5A scenic area in Lingshui Li autonomous county.

The island boasts extremely clean beaches and rich marine ecological resources. It is the only site in the country that allows visitors to dive with dolphins.

22、It is an unpleasant extinction that will change the world and how people communicate: within 20 years, two thirds of all the planet’s languages will be dead.

Experts agree that nothing can stop it happening but one academic is trying her hardest to slow it down. Professor Antonella Sorace is one of a growing number who believe learning a second language has enormous untapped benefits for the human brain. This is true not only for young children but also for adults and people at risk from dementia (痴呆), where research consistently shows that learning a new language could delay the start of the disease for four to five years — a better result than with any medication to date.

It is those benefits of bilingualism (双语) that should encourage us to preserve and protect Europe’s minority languages — Gaelic, Manx, Cornish and Ulster Scots, she says.

Already her work and the project she founded three years ago in Edinburgh, Bilingualism Matters — now expanding across Europe and in the US — have convinced the Scottish government to introduce languages to primary schools. From 2023 all Scottish children will be learning a language other than English in their first year at school, with two other languages to be introduced later.

Bilingualism Matters is also working to encourage businesses to consider the benefits of their staff learning languages. “In business, people say ‘English is the language of business, why would I need to learn another language?’” said Sorace. “Maybe it would mean you could do better business.”

Just as disappearing forests take with them secrets of undiscovered medicines, disappearing languages can take the key to a longer and better quality of life. The first battle is to unpick the popular assumption that bilingualism might damage children’s brains. There were even suggestions it could encourage schizophrenia (精神分裂症).

Study after study has shown the opposite to be true, says Sorace. “These prejudices are deeply rooted, but we are perhaps halfway to persuading people that the brain can cope. Then we have to persuade people that it is actually of benefit.”

23、   The saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover, means you should not guess the worth or value of something based on how it looks. That message was clear at a recent event called the Human Library Project. The event took place at the Northern Virginia, or NoVa, Community College, outside of Washington. D. C.

The Human Library began 19 years ago in Denmark. It grew from a youth organization called “Stop the Violence”. Today, it is a worldwide movement. At the NoVa event, students got the chance to learn from a person—a “human book”—instead of a library book.

Patricia Cooper organized the event. She said that human books celebrate variety by telling their life stories in an easy-going setting. “The goal of the human library is to talk to people in your community who you may otherwise not speak to because you have your own prejudices (偏见) and hopefully to break down some of these barriers.”

This is the third year that NoVa has held such an event. The collection of human books included a civil rights activist, a scientist from the American space agency NASA, and an opera singer.

Artist Brian Dailey was a human book. He spoke about his travels to 113 countries in seven years. Dailey said that, during his travels, he asked people whom he took pictures of for a one-word answer to a series of other words—such as love, freedom and war. He discovered that people in different countries often had very different reactions to the same word.

When Dailey asked people in Africa about the word “war” they used words like justice, liberation and peace. When he asked the same question to people in Syrian refugee camps, the answer was: “tears, hunger, fear, destruction”.

24、Have you ever had such an experience? When chatting on WeChat, you sent someone a voice message where you thought your voice was clear and moving, but when you heard your own recorded voice, you couldn't help wondering: Is this really my voice? Why is it so ugly?

It's not your fault. The discomfort we have over hearing our voices in audio recordings is probably due to a mix of physiology and psychology.

For one, the sound from an audio recording is transmitted differently to your brain compared with the sound made when you speak. When listening to a recording of your voice, the sound travels through the air and into your ears—what's referred to as “air conduction”. However, while some of the sound is transmitted through air conduction, much of the sound is internally conducted directly through your head when you speak. Thus, people generally learn their voice as deeper and richer. The recorded voice, in comparison, can sound thinner and higher, which many find annoying.

Another reason why hearing a recording of your voice can be so discomforting is that it really is a new voice—one that exposes a difference between your self-perception and reality. Dr Silke Paulmann, a psychologist at the University of Essex, says, “we sound more high-pitched than what we think we should, which makes us uneasy as it doesn't meet our internal expectations; our voice plays a massive role in forming our identity and I guess no one likes to realize that you're not really who you think you are.”

So if the voice in your head criticizes the voice coming out of a recording device, it's probably your inner critic overreacting—and you're judging yourself a bit too harshly.

【1】What does the author think of the fact that people dislike their recorded voices?

A.Instructive.

C.Reasonable.

D.Confusing.

【2】What does the underlined word “transmitted” mean in paragraph 3?

B.People don't have to care about its difference.

D.It narrows the gap between self-expectation and reality.

【4】What problem does the author focus on in the text?

A.How do people chat politely on WeChat?

C.How do people change their recorded voice?
