The Dead Sea, a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west, is shrinking at an alarming rate - about 3. 3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group Eco Peace Middle East. And human actions are largely to blame.
"It's not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea: it's more like the whole area,” said photographer Moritz Kustner, who visited the area in February to work on his series "The Dying Dead Sea”.
The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it, such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s, some of the water sources it relied upon were diverted. Israel, for instance, built a pipeline during that time so it could supply water throughout the country.
Mineral extraction industries are another main reason the water levels are falling, experts say. The Dead Sea's minerals have been used as medicine and can often be found in cosmetics and other consumer products.
And then, of course, there's the Middle East's hot, dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to replenish itself. Last year, Israel and Jordan signed a $900 million deal in an effort to keep the Dead Sea's water levels stable. It includes building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea which would be able to not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump water into the Dead Sea.
But for now, Kustner shows us that the Dead Sea remains very much a place of interest, with people from all over the world going there to swim in its salty waters
The Dead Sea, known as the Salt Sea in the language of Hebrew, is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. And because of what has been happening over the years, the salt is only getting saltier.

22、Flextime is a flexible hours schedule in which employees choose their own working hours, usually working within approximate limits set by the employer or by the government. 【1】
For employees, flextime has a clear advantage. 【2】 For example, people can use flextime to create schedules which will allow them to go to school, handle childcare, assist relatives, and perform other tasks. Employees may also use their flextime to create a schedule which optimizes creativity, as in the case of someone who would prefer to work earlier in the day to get more accomplished.
【3】First, it tends to increase employees' satisfaction. This makes the company a better and more productive place to work. In addition, flextime can allow companies to serve clients for a greater portion of the day, as employees will be around at varying hours to answer phones, attend meetings, and so forth.
Most flextime schedules include core time. 【4】 Employees are also usually given an hourly, daily or weekly limit to ensure that they do not violate laws about working hours. Or the company is only willing to pay wages for so many hours of work each week.
A classic example of a flexible time schedule is that someone who works four 10-hour shifts a week can take three days off. Flextime can also be combined with flexplace, in which the environment is better than that of the office. 【5】 Employers may also allow people to work in untraditional settings such as coffee houses.
A.For example, home offices are increasingly popular among many companies.
B.It allows them to make changes to their work schedule which will suit their lives.
C.Many employers all over the world offer this method to their employees.
D.However, flextime may not be applicable to all fields.
E.It is a period of the day in which everyone is expected to be at work.
F.Employers benefit from flextime a lot.
G.It’s also seen as a family-friendly policy.

24、What would you like to do first, when a storm is coming? Perhaps, leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety! But there are a few people who will get into cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.
“Storm chasing(追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.
Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm seasons.
Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”
However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.”
【1】For storm chasing, storm chasers should first ________.
A.stay patiently for the storm to develop
B.collect information for a coming storm
C.drive straight to the center of the storm
D.find shelters to hide themselves at once
【2】Beginners of storm chasing are advised ________.
A.to do it in an organized way
B.to stay far away from a storm
C.to spend much more time on it
D.not to run along in a heavy rain
【3】“it is all worth it” in the last paragraph really means ________.
A.a lot of money is spent in chasing storm
B.a storm gifts the greatest show on Earth
C.storm chasing is worth hours of waiting
D.the best view deserves your being brave
【4】What can we learn from the text?
A.Storm chasing is just a game fit for young people.
B.Some storm chasers were killed during the storms.
C.Sometimes storm chasers just feel a bit disappointed.
D.Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world.
