二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Last weekend, my husband and I drove a dog to her new home. Typically, when we have a new dog in the backseat, it’s a young dog. But this passenger was a much different story. Magdalen is a 13-year old dog. Her owner gave her up temporarily when he was sick, but when he fully recovered several months later, he said he didn’t want her back. He had her since she was young but now had no place for her.

The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable to give her a forever home. When Speak St, Louis, the rescue team I work with, was contacted about the dog, they offered to take her in. She went to a vet (兽医) for a basic health check. But the vet didn’t have great news. Her mouth was swollen (肿胀的) with all sorts of problems. Two teeth fell out during cleaning and eleven more had to be pulled out.

Luckily, a good friend of mine, a dog trainer with a soft heart for seniors, had agreed to adopt Magdalen. On the trip to the trainer’s home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our backseat. I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure.

Her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick. But I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t have wanted her back. I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the past. We’re family and we stay that way forever. She’d be able to live a good life. I hoped, in her new home!

A.Training old dogs.

B.Treating sick dogs.

C.Looking for homes for dogs.

D.Looking for lost dogs’ owners.

【3】How did the author feel on her way to her friend’s home?

A.Relieved and happy.

B.Nervous and grateful.

C.Surprised and curious.

D.Hopeful and proud.

【4】What does the author think of Magdalen’s owner giving her up?

A.She didn’t understand his behaviour.

B.She believed it was painful for him.

C.She was certain he would regret.

D.She thought he made a wise decision.

22、HYDROGENPOWERED cars have had a rough ride. Back in 2003, they were sold as “one of the most encouraging, innovative technologies of our times” by US president at the time George W. Bush. Then the Tesla revolution came along and they were left in the dust by their batterydriven electric rivals.

Now, there are signs of a comeback. A recent survey of more than 900 global automotive executives by consulting firm KPMG found that 52 percent rated hydrogen() fuel cell vehicles as a leading industry trend. Japan has announced plans to put 40,000 hydrogen vehicles on the road in the next five years, and South Korea 16,000. Germany wants to have 400 refueling stations for hydrogen vehicles by 2025 and California has already opened 35.

This renewed push has its doubts. Tesla chief Elon Musk, for example, has dismissed hydrogen cars as being “extremely silly”. But Joan Ogden at the University of California, Davis, sees a future in which hydrogen and electric vehicles play complementary(互补的) roles. “There are arguments for having both,” she says.

Like electric cars, hydrogen vehicles produce zero pollutants, so they don't damage our health or the climate. The main difference is that hydrogen cars use a fuel cell instead of a battery to power an electric motor. Hydrogen is stored in a tank and fed into the fuel cell, where its chemical energy is changed into electrical energy.

Hydrogen cars are finally becoming commercially practical because fuel cells have become smaller and lighter, says Matthew Macleod at Toyota, which began selling the Mirai, one of the first massmarket hydrogen cars, in 2014 for $60,000.

We are also figuring out better ways to transport and store hydrogen, says Michael Dolan at Australia's national science organization, the CSIRO. Last month, his team showed that hydrogen gas can be changed into liquid ammonia() for transportation, then changed back. Liquid ammonia takes up less space and is less flammable than hydrogen gas, making it easier to ship to refueling stations.

The ability to rapidly refuel is one of the main advantages hydrogen vehicles have, says Macleod. Filling up a hydrogen car takes about the same time as filling a petrol one, rather than the hours it typically takes to recharge an electric car's battery. You can also go further on a full tank of hydrogen—about 500 kilometers, compared with 300 kilometers for a standard fully charged battery.

But although hydrogen reacts cleanly—the only thing coming out is water—hydrogen vehicles are more energyconsuming than electric ones if you take fuel production and transport into consideration, says Jake Whitehead at the University of Queensland, Australia.

At the moment, most hydrogen is from natural gas—a fossil fuel. “Green” hydrogen can be made by splitting water using solar or wind power, but this involves multiple steps, each using energy along the way. In contrast, a single energy step is required to directly recharge a car battery at home.

1What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?

A. Gorge W. Bush once drove a hydrogen car on a bumpy road.

B. Joan Ogden thinks hydrogen and electric cars can exist and improve together.

C. Japan will have more hydrogen cars than electric cars on the road in the next 5 years.

D. Tesla made a contribution to the popularity of hydrogen cars.

2The underlined word “flammable” in the 6th paragraph may mean that something is   .

A. heavy to carry   B. fragrant to smell   C. easy to burn   D. bitter to taste

3What can we know about the differences between hydrogen and electric cars?

A. Comparatively, for hydrogen cars, fuel production and transportation is cheaper.

B. On a fully charged battery, electric cars can cover a longer distance.

C. It takes far more time to refuel hydrogen cars than to recharge a battery.

D. Hydrogen cars use a fuel cell rather than a battery to provide power.

4What's the author's attitude towards hydrogenpowered cars?

A. Opposed.   B. Approved.   C. Skeptical.   D. Objective.

23、When visiting a laboratory or museum and admire an eyeball or a tiny dead creature floating in a glass bottle, you see the preservation power of alcohol. Scientists have been relying on it since the 1600s to preserve their curious specimens (标本). And, if done correctly, it can sustain a sample for hundreds of years. But, how does it work?

“The long and the short of it is that it’s poisonous to certain kinds of microorganisms that would cause decay (腐烂),” said professor Bill Carroll or Indiana University Bloomington. He used wine as an example. It’s made as yeast (酵母) eats sugar from grapes and then releases alcohol. But the yeast releases so much alcohol that the concentration becomes poisonous and kills the yeast. And that alcohol content-around 14%-helps delay the growth of microorganisms for years.

“Preserving other organic materials-Such as DNA, tissues or even entire animals- requires a higher alcohol concentration,” said Katherine Maslenikov, the fish collections manager at the Burke Museum in Seattle. For example, Maslenikov might take a fish specimen. After some initial preparations, she puts the fish specimen in a bottle of 70% alcohol and 30% of water. “For long term storage, 70% alcohol seems to be that magic number,” Maslenikov said. “There’s enough water to help the specimen hold its shape, and enough alcohol to prevent the growth of microorganisms.”

Alcohol at even higher concentrations, for instance 95% ethanol (乙醇), works ns a dehydrant (脱水剂), meaning it removes and replaces the water in the cell, tissue or whole-body specimen with alcohol. This technique is a common way of preserving DNA.

It can be tricky to decide what percentage of alcohol to use. Using too much or too little can affect the sample’s shape and flexibility, or even lower its ability to preserve the sample. High concentrations of alcohol used to dehydrate a specimen will preserve it. But Maslenikov said this process can also cause a specimen to change in size (from the loss of water) and become easily broken (form the hardened proteins). Sometimes that’s OK; it all depends on what you are trying to preserve.

【1】Why is alcohol mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To show the special function of alcohol for storage.

B.To present the achievements that scientists have made.

C.To remind people not to touch the glass bottles in museums.

D.To introduce the exhibits displayed with alcohol in them.

【2】What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A.The common way used to preserve DNA.

B.The process of removing the water in the cell.

C.The role of alcohol with higher concentrations.

D.The aim to develop the technique of preserving DNA.

【3】According to the text, to make a fish specimen, what percentage of alcohol and water is needed?

A.95% ethanol and 30 % water

B.70% alcohol and 30% water

C.14% alcohol and 70% water

D.30% alcohol and 70% water

【4】What is the attitude of Maslenikov to using alcohol for preservation?

A.Supportive

B.Cautious

C.opposed

D.Enthusiastic

24、Dubai(迪拜)is one of the economically richest places in the world. With its numerous malls, hotels, and beautiful beaches, Dubai has always been a popular holiday destination. This city was visited by around 5 million tourists each year. The government wanted to increase this number to 15 million. However, Dubai has only 45 miles of coastline, which is nowhere enough for so many people. To solve this problem, an island that looked like a palm tree was built in 2006, and named the Palm Jumeirah.

The plan for the island was extraordinary. It was to host several hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and homes. Although the initial plan was to build the island from concrete(水泥), a decision was taken to create it from sand and gravel(砾石), so as to give it a natural look.

To make sure that this project was a success, the best engineers from across the world were employed. Engineers from Holland formed the majority in this group. To begin with, the engineers calculated the strength of storms at sea, and also the expected amount of rise in water levels due to global warming. And then they found that, the proposed location for the island was neither very wide nor deep.

One of the difficulties the engineers came across was to put sand on the sea bed to create the breakwater(防浪堤).Finding the right sand for the project was also a daunting task, as the sand from Dubai’s deserts was too fine. Instead, sand from the sea was used, as it was coarser(粗糙). Once the breakwater was built, construction of the island began.

The Palm Island are really impressive in terms of engineering. However, these projects are so large that they may have changed the ecology of the region. Also, an immense amount of money and resources go into maintaining the islands, which is a major concern at the moment. Only time will tell if building the Palm Islands was actually a good decision.

1What does Paragraph 1 mainly show us?

A. Beautiful attractions of Dubai.

B. The geographical features of Dubai.

C. The purposes of building the Palm Jumeirah,

D. The difficulty in developing the tourism industry.

2Why were some changes made to the initial plan for the project?

A. To reduce the building cost.   B. To get the islands completed sooner.

C. To get the building materials more easily.   D. To make the island look more natural,

3What does the underlined word"daunting" in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. meaningless   B. difficult   C. Impossible   D. necessary

4According to the last paragraph, how is the construction of the Palm Islands?

A. Profitable.   B. Surprising.   C. Worrying.   D. Unbelievable.
