二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、Two of the hardest things to accomplish in this world are to acquire wealth by honest effort and, having gained it, to learn how to use it properly. Recently I walked into the locker room of a rather well-known golf club after finishing a round. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a half-dozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more than was good for them. These same men can be found there day after day, and, strangely enough, each one of these men had been a man of affairs and wealth, successful in business and respected in the community. If material prosperity were the chief necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy. Yet, it seemed to me, something very important was missing, else-there would not have been the constant effort to escape the realities of life through scotch and soda. They knew, each one of them, that their productivity had ceased (停止). When a fruit tree ceases to bear its fruit, it is dying. And it is even so with man.

What is the answer to a long and happy existence in this world of ours? I think I found it long ago in a passage from the book of Genesis which caught my eye while I was looking through my Bible. The words were few, but they became memorably impressed on my mind. “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread.

To me, that has been a challenge from my earliest recollections (memories). In fact, the battle of life, of existence, is a challenge to everyone. The immortal words of St. Paul, too, have been and always will be a great inspiration to me. At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.

1Which of the following is indicated in the first paragraph?

A. Wealth results from honest effort.

B. The men seated at tables in the locker room are lost in the significance of life.

C. For some people, no way can be found to escape the realities of life other than scotch and soda.

D. The men acquire wealth by planting fruit trees.

2The underlined sentence “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread” means ________.

A. Bread tastes delicious when sweat pours off your face

B. No pains, no gains

C. Failure is the mother of success

D. Bread comes from the sweat on your face

3We learn from the passage that the author ________.

A. was a wealthy person in the community

B. held a positive attitude towards an active life

C. was fond of associating with celebrities (名人)

D. kept a secret of the reason why he was so impressed

4What is implied in the passage by the writer?

A. To use wealth properly, cat, drink and be merry.

B. Where there is a will, there is a way.

C. As life is but like a dream, a man is like a fruit tree.

D. If you cease to struggle, you cease to live.

27、To date, 12 astronauts have walked on the lunar surface. While nobody has set foot on its surface since 1972, plans are in place to return people to the Moon soon. In order to increase our knowledge of the Moon and carry out experiments on its surface, people and machinery first need to be delivered there by lunar landers. One of these currently under development is the Blue Moon lander, created by privately funded aerospace producer Blue Origin. The company, which also focuses on space tourism, is owned by Jeff Bezos. Blue Moon wasn’t selected for NASA’s Artemis Moon missions, but Blue Origin hopes to use the lunar lander in future missions to achieve a sustained human presence in space.

The Blue Moon lander, which entered development in 2016, uses autonomous technology to land with high precision. Equipped with LIDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors, Blue Origin claims that its craft is guaranteed to land within 23 metres of the preplanned landing site. It scans the Moon by firing laser beams (激光束) at the surface to create a computerised image of the terrain (地形), which can prevent the lander from falling into danger and allows the flattest nearby surface to be chosen.

When in lunar orbit, the lander can release microsatellites into space. Once on the Moon, the lander will release other devices, such as rovers, from its top deck. The equipment that’s attached to the lander can be changed based on specific mission requirements. For Blue Moon landers with a human crew — and those returning equipment and lunar samples to Earth — a mounting capsule can be added. This launches from the Moon to travel back to Earth.

【1】What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?

A.12 astronauts have been sent to the lunar surface.

B.Blue Origin focuses on no more than space tourism.

C.Blue Moon has delivered equipment to the moon.

D.People will probably return to the moon in the near future.

【2】What can we know about the Blue Moon lander?

A.It was selected for NASA’s Artemis Moon missions.

B.It will release microsatellites into space once on the moon.

C.It can be changed according to specific mission requirements.

D.Its application of advanced technology guarantees precise landings.

【3】What could be the best title for the text?

A.Hope of People to Return to the Moon.

B.The Blue Moon Lander — Ladder to Go back to the Moon.

C.Blue Origin, Ambition of NASA’s Artemis Moon Missions.

D.High-Tech Machinery Fuels the Development of Space.

【4】Where would you most probably find the text above?

A.In a book review.

B.In a news story.

C.In a science magazine.

D.In a travel brochure.

28、Fancy a holiday to the moon? Sounds crazy? Not really. A Japanese company has been working on how to organize holidays to the moon for several years now.【1】

Trying to make the holiday possible will not be an easy task, and the Japanese company plans to make it in stages.【2】A transport system, like the space shuttle ( 航天飞机) used by NASA at the moment is likely to be developed for this purpose.

The next stage is to build a big hotel orbiting 500 km above the earth. The hotel will orbit the earth once every four or five hours, which will offer visitors some fascinating views of the earth. 【3】While this may not seem very exciting at first, think about new sports that can be designed for people to play in zero gravity.

The final stage in the plan is the construction of a hotel on the surface of the moon itself. As solar energy would be used to provide power, it would be important to build the hotel near one of the poles of the moon in order to gather as much solar energy as possible.【4】It is also important to find a part of the moon which is flat, as a long runway will need to be built for the space shuttle to land on. Meanwhile, the company has already developed ways to make cement (水泥) on the moon. 【5】The company plans to produce water from oxygen elements, which can be found in moon rocks and hydrogen, which will have to be imported from earth.

So perhaps in a few years you might be enjoying yourselves on the moon.

A.Next, the hotel will have a wide range of sporting activities.

B.Tourists who want to travel into space can stay at a big hotel.

C.The first thing to do is to organize trips around the earth for a few hours.

D.There would probably be holidays to a moon hotel within the next ten years.

E.There is plenty of sand, but the big problem will come with producing water.

F.This part of the development plan does not seem to be too difficult to carry out.

G.This is because a lunar day, which is 14 earth days long, is followed by 14 days of darkness.

29、As my plane landed in Pamplona, Spain, I couldn’t help thinking., “I’m crazy about going abroad and taking classes in Spanish.” My biggest fear was whether I would be able to communicate with Spanish speakers, and how I would be able to adapt to a culture that is different in so many ways from American culture.

I had attended classes in Spanish and talked with native students for over a month but now it got better. When I first started, it was easy to get frustrated when I didn’t understand parts of what my professor was saying, or to feel embarrassed when I had to ask someone to repeat themselves many times. However, people often politely corrected me when I made a mistake, and also offered support and words of encouragement. Noticing my own progress through my increased ability to have a conversation has made the frustration dissolve. And it helped me reach my biggest piece of advice to anyone facing the same fear: to force yourself to speak as much as possible.

Another challenge I faced was culture shock when I arrived in Spain. As someone used to stores always being open in Seattle, I’ve had to get used to most stores being closed during afternoon hours and on Sundays. Plans are made much more slowly, and usually at the last minute, which for someone who values organization and certainty as much as I do, was difficult to get used to. The best way I found to deal with the culture shock was to change my views. I’ve grown to appreciate the Spanish attitude that there is more to life than work. Family and friends are important as well, and having so much time off allows life outside work to be enjoyed.

Living abroad is always frightening, especially when the language and culture are completely foreign. There will always be challenges, frustrations, and problems. However, learning to deal with them and appreciate the journey has been one of the most valuable things I’ve learned while abroad.

【1】What can be learned about the author before she began her life in Spain?

A.She was well-prepared.

B.She was concerned about her life there.

C.She really looked forward to the new culture.

D.She had worked very hard at learning Spanish.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “dissolve” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Build up.

B.Grow again.

C.Disappear slowly.

D.Displayed clearly.

【3】What did the author do to deal with the culture shock?

A.She tried hard to make friends.

B.She lived the way the locals did.

C.She made plans in advance carefully.

D.She turned her attention to her study.

【4】What does the author’s story show?

A.Culture shock can be too hard to go through.

B.Living abroad isn’t as good as people think.

C.Living abroad can be challenging but it is worth doing.

D.Today’s people should learn to accept different cultures.

Common Characteristics of Folktales

Most of us know some very old folktales. People shared these stories orally for years before writing them down. Since people told stories instead of writing them, the stories changed in between places and with each storyteller. Each new storyteller made changes to the stories based on his own traditions and culture. For example, many cultures have stories like the raven tale about how people got light. In these tales, though, the main character is another type of animal.

Next, the characters in folktales are similar. They are usually ordinary characters who do extraordinary things. They usually have only one or two strong characteristics. For instance, the chief in the Raven story is selfish and not very smart. But Raven is very generous― e wants to help people. And he’s very clever as he finds a way to get the light. In addition, often the characters in folktales are not people but animals with human qualities. They talk, make plans, and have strong emotions. Small animals such as the popular spider and turtle play this role in West African stories. In summary, the characters of folktales are simple but often clever in achieving their goals.

Finally, the plot, or what happens in the folktale, is usually exciting. Most folktales begin with an expression like “a long time ago” and then move very quickly into the story, which starts with a problem. For instance, a strong, bad character often gives a weaker character a task and promises something if he completes the task. The weaker character often uses clever tricks, special skills, or magic to complete the task. In the end of a folktale, the good characters usually win and the bad characters lose. In conclusion, the plot of a folktale is interesting.

So, in summary, we know that the tradition of folktales is very old. They are told all over the world, but they share several of the same features, as said above.
