21、Microsoft has announced the general availability of its Azure AI Content Safety, a new service that helps users detect and filter harmful AI-generated and user-generated content across applications and services.

The service, designed to reduce negative information in community environments, includes text and image detection and identifies content that Microsoft terms “offensive, risky, or undesirable”, including hate, bias, adult content, violence and self-harm.

“By focusing on content safety, we can create a safer digital environment that promotes responsible use of AI and safeguards the well-being of individuals and society as a whole,” wrote Louise Han, product manager for Azure Anomaly Detector, in a blog post announcing the launch.

Azure AI Content Safety has the ability to handle various content categories, languages, and threats to moderate both text and visual content. It also offers image features that use AI algorithms to scan, analyze, and moderate visual content, ensuring what Microsoft terms 360- degree comprehensive safety measures. The service is also equipped to moderate content across multiple languages and it can rate the severity of specific content on a scale ranging from 0 to 7. Then it instructs human detectors to take action.

“When it comes to online safety, it is crucial to consider more than just human-generated content, especially as AI-generated content becomes prevalent,” Han wrote. “To make sure that AI-generated outputs are accurate, reliable, or appropriate materials is essential. Content safety not only protects users from misinformation and potential harm but also upholds (支持) moral standards and builds trust in AI technologies.”

Azure AI Content Safety has a better understanding of textual content and cultural context and are more precise in processing data and content than other products in their category.

Azure AI Content Safety is mainly priced on a pay-as-you-go basis. Interested users can check out pricing options on the Azure AI Content Safety pricing page.

22、Nearly gone are the days when humans covered themselves with blankets to keep warm, and it’s now the age of covering glaciers (冰川) with blankets to keep them cool because at the rate climate is changing, this seems like a very workable idea to keep them from melting (融化).

At a ski resort (度假胜地) in the Swiss Alps, the Swiss use blankets to protect the glacier from the warm climate. Gian Darms, who handles snow conditions at the ski resort, introduced this unique procedure. The blankets are being used to cover the top of the 10,623-foot Mount Titlis whose glacier has already melted in the last few decades and it is expected to disappear completely in the next 50 years due to global warming.

Facing the great effect of climate change, resort employees have taken it upon themselves to protect the glacier from the heat and for this process, they spend about five to six weeks every summer covering parts of the glacier with specially protective wool. This helps to reflect the Sun’s energy back into the atmosphere and prevent the glacier from melting, while also preserving the already fallen snow on the glacier in the previous winter season. After the season passes, the employees remove the coating and fill in the gaps in the glacier’s surface with the snow — now that is some commitment to Mother Nature!

This practice has been going on for a while now and the area of the glacier has increased to almost 100,000 square meters now. “We’ve been covering more and more in the last few years. Almost 30,000 square meters more is covered this year alone,” said Darms.

The ski resort’s actions show how severe the effect of climate change is on glaciers which have been melting at rapid rates in the past few years. Many different resorts have also started following suit to try to prevent them from melting. Saving an entire glacier is a completely different story. It is actually costly and potentially unfavorable to surrounding ecosystems. As a result, such blankets have only been applied mostly in an effort to preserve profitable ski runs.

23、In 1880, fourteen-year-old Matthew Henson loved to hear sailors tell tales of their exciting lives at sea. The travel, the adventure, the danger, and the steady pay were all attracting young Henson. One day, he found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. With the help of the ship’s captain and other members of the crew, Henson learned mathematics, navigation, history, geography, and many other subjects. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was well educated and had become an excellent seaman.

Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to accompany him. The shop owner knew about his young employee’s skills and experience on ocean journeys, so he introduced Peary to Henson.

Using his map-reading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to be a worthy and smart seaman. Peary soon made Henson his assistant(助理), and they became close friends. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true. Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole either time. The cold, wind, and ice were worse than either of them had ever imagined.

In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship in the arctic cold had made them suffer a lot. This would be their last chance. With four Inuit(因纽特)guides, they made a mad rush straight across the ice toward the pole. Peary’s feet were injured and he had to be pulled on a dogsled. In April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in the snow.

In later years, Robert Peary and Henson were greatly honored for their achievements. Today, the two friends and fellow explorers lie in heroes’ graves not far apart in the Arlington National Cemetery.

24、Nowadays, more and more teenagers use smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices more than ever before. And the amount of time they spend on these devices is only likely to increase in the future. But are all these changes good?

We sometimes call children who are able to use mobile devices and technology easily digital natives. They can text, email, get Wi-Fi, and download. Some experts say that long periods of time spent chatting to friends online, playing video games and listening to mp3s, for example, may possibly change how their brains work.

Then there is the question of privacy. All this online activity creates a digital footprint. Every time we share a photo or a post on social media, and every time we search for something on the Internet, information about our activity is stored somewhere.

Our inability to control what happens to our children's digital footprint and their personal privacy has big possibilities. It might become normal for companies to ask their employees for their social media qualifications. We are also becoming more aware that companies and governments may be able to 'listen in' on our communications. So it is important to make our children aware of the possible results of over sharing.

Another area where the digital world may have a big effect is in education. One worry is that kids who spend a lot of time online at home are sometimes unable to socialize properly with other children when they are at school. Other experts point out that, when it comes to children and technology, the children are the experts, not the teachers. They say that we should stop seeing online as 'bad' and offline as 'good' and there is evidence of innovative work in some schools.

So, do we really need to rescue our children from the dangers of the digital world?

【1】 Which of the following can summarize the main idea of the text?

A. Do we need to rescue our kids from the digital world?

B. Should children learn to use digital technology?

C. Are there changes in children’s school life?

D. Should teachers accept changes in our life?

【2】According to the second paragraph, what is the possible effect of digital childhood?

A. Children can grow up quickly.

B. Children can read texts fluently.

C. Children’s way of thinking may be changed.

D. Children may become mentally disabled.

【3】All the following may happen to our digital footprints EXCEPT________

A. When surfing the Internet, our digital footprints are saved.

B. Some business societies may take advantage of the information.

C. Government may look into our communication through the Internet.

D. Digital pictures may be printed by our computer automatically.

【4】Why are many teachers doubtful about digital technology?

A. Because some students can not do well in studies.

B. Because some teachers haven’t changed for years.

C. Because some students addicted to digital technology can not socialize well.

D. Because some teachers addicted to tradition technology cannot teach well.

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

He was there every morning, sitting motionless on the front stops of his house. His bright blue eyes seemed so distant and sad. Every morning, I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten. We were new to the neighbourhood, so I didn’t know many of my neighbours. On one beautiful morning, as we passed his house, my daughter piped up and called out to him, “Hi, Mr. Man!”She was an outgoing girl, and I wasn't surprised at her cheerfulness, but her enthusiasm soon faded when the man didn’t look at her or say ‘Hi’ back.

As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Stumbling for words, because I didn’t have the answer, I said simply, “Maybe he is having a bad day.”

Once back home, I tackled the breakfast dishes, and I thought about Mr. Man.What was his story? Why did he seem so sad?1 wanted to do something to cheer him up. I thought of a few ways to make his day a bit brighter, but nothing seemed special cnough.

The next morning, after dropping my daughter off at school, I saw one of my other neighbours tending her front garden. After I introduced myself, she invited me in for a chat.   She was a long-time resident of the neighbourhood, who knew everyone and everything. She was a bubbly personality, but when I asked her about the man who lived nearby, she grew serious. Bob recently lost his wife in a car accident. He hasn’t been the same since.

The following week seemed to fly by. I had talked to my daughter about what we could do to make Mr. Man smile.

Paragraph 1: With every suggestion l made, she simply said “No, not that.”

Parsgraph 2: Inside, in perfect calligraphy, it simply read, “Thank you, from Mr, Man.”
