21、   Luke Grenfell-Shaw has developed a rare form of cancer. It started as a pain in his shoulder and the tumor(肿瘤)spread to his lungs, making it stage four. The Oxford graduate was teaching English in Siberia when he suffered shoulder pain and consulted the school nurse. It was her reaction to a lump on his back that sent him back home to Bristol. "I was 24 years old. I had done an ultra-marathon," Luke said. "48 hours later, I was back in hospital in the UK." On 19 June 2018, doctors informed Luke that he had cancer.

"I had kind of worked out that it was cancer, but what kind of blew me away was the fact that it was stage four cancer," said Luke. "That day, I felt like my life was disintegrated. My life had been comfortable and conventional. I worked hard and got rewards in terms of education, jobs, things like that. That was all taken away." On the day of his diagnosis(诊断), Luke had one clear thought in his mind that he wanted to cycle around the world. It was something he had always hoped to do, but the cancer news made him realize that he couldn't put it off.

"I realize that the future had to become now," Luke explained. He decided to cycle from Bristol to Beijing --- more than 5,000 miles --- on a tandem bike, because he wants to bring people along to share the experience with him. Luke will not only be joined by his family and friends for certain legs of his trip, but also by other young people who are living with cancer. "This trip is something I'm going to enjoy," said Luke. 22、Last summer I was lucky enough to participate in a volunteer adventure to Kenya, in association with Virgin Atlantic’s Be the Change programme and children’s charity, Free the Children. The moment I read the e-mail saying that I had been accepted into Free the Children’s Virgin Atlantic scholarship trip to Kenya, I had no idea how much it was going to change my life. I thought the trip would be a great way to learn about life in one of the most rural areas of Kenya, but I never thought about how deeply I might be affected by this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

When we entered the Masai Mara, the first thing that struck me was how unbelievably beautiful it was. As I looked closer to it, I realized there was something even more beautiful: the people. I have never been to a place where the saying “the people are what make the place” was more true.

The way they wave at you excitedly as you drive past, shouting “Jambo, Jambo!” is something that I have never experienced. They are always smiling and welcoming and it made me realize that, if everyone were to act like this, the world would be a much happier place.

The most amazing thing about the trip was that we weren’t treated like tourists for one second. We were able to experience every little detail. We built foundations, carried ten litres of water…

The one thing I will never forget is visiting Emorijoi Primary School. Let me describe it like this: As soon as you entered into the gate, you would hear someone shouting your name. Then you looked around and realized that it was the same little girl that you were playing football with the last time you visited.

There are literally no words to explain how much I miss Kenya. It feels like there is a piece of string attaching me to everyone that I met there. They will stay with me forever and always be in my heart.

23、The Loss of Innocence

Innocence is such a precious gift. It’s explained as freedom from guilt or wrong doing.Just imagine never having to worry about anything and having a guilt free mind. Some people wish to save this kind of innocence from being lost from childhood to adulthood.

What would the world be like if innocence were never lost? One way it would benefit humanity is the lack of hatred (仇恨)among the world.During youth, there may be an occasional argument, even a little physical fight, but nothing like firing a handgun at a fellow human being. And children are blind towards the racial differences of others.A kid will hang out with any other kid.It is the lack of innocence and the ignorance we learn from adults that influence children otherwise.Another benefit is the constant desire for fun and adventure. With very little if any time at all for fun,the adventurous mind is lost in time with the responsibilities placed upon adults. If innocence were kept alive, these ambitions would never depart from our lives.

However, other people actually hate the idea of innocence lasting forever. They feel that the lack of organization and mental power of those with innocence would cause extremely destructive consequences to society in general.A large number of individuals would never have the urge to learn, work, and act upon the necessary needs for humanity to survive.Without a proper education which is usually provided by those who no longer live in a world of innocence, people would not have the desire to succeed, get a good job in life,or provide income for their families, which would hurt the lives of children.

The lack of a good education and career would also harm the economy. As long as innocence is kept alive,no one would be terribly angered at the lack of effort people put out in the workplace, resulting in a strong decline in production and quality of needed goods.

Maybe it is wrong in wanting to save innocence. It sure is a nice thought, though.Perhaps innocence was meant to be lost.It was god’s will to make things the way they are,and there is a good purpose for everything. All that remains to be said about innocence is to enjoy it while it lasts.

C.more happy families would be guaranteed

D.people would realize their childhood dreams

3According to the author, people with innocence can hurt the economy with their lack of _____.

A.motivational will

B.mental ability

C.adventurous ambitions

D.needed goods

24、The Puritans (清教徒) get a bad reputation in America—especially when it comes to alcohol.

Mayflower, the first ship that came over from England to Massachusetts Bay, actually carried more beer than water. In fact the Founding Fathers of America liked a drink—Samuel Adams was a partner in his father’s brewery, and Thomas Jefferson was famous for importing European wines.

Early Americans took a healthful small drink for breakfast, whiskey was a typical lunchtime drink, ale (麦芽酒) accompanied supper and the day ended with another drink called nightcap. Most Americans in 1790 consumed an average of 5.8 gallons of pure alcohol a year.In 1830, consumption reached 7.1 gallons a year and alcoholism was starting to have a serious influence on communities.Women and children might be in physical danger if the man of the house began drinking. If he became ill or lost his job through drinking, there was no social safety net to support or protect his family.Eventually, alcoholism was being treated as a disease.

By the late 19th Century, support for Prohibition, banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol, was powerful. The first arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol was in 1897.On 16 January 1919, Prohibition was set into law. However, by the 1930s when American economy was experiencing a hard time it was widely believed that making alcohol legal again would provide badly-needed jobs and taxes. So in February of 1933, Prohibition was endeD. Still, Prohibition had a great influence on alcohol drinking in this country. In 1955, Americans drank an average of 2.3 gallons of pure alcohol a year. The Prohibition movement was still quite strong after Prohibition ended and it led to a lot of local prohibition on alcohol.

The American presidency has done a lot to rehabilitate alcohol and make it respectable again.Presidents Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama can all be seen on film drinking socially and making official toasts with international celebrities.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Zero-waste is the latest trend among eco-friendly and sustainable-living circles. Concerned individuals are taking a hard look at our wasteful habits, and finding creative and innovative ways to deal with the issue. Among them is a restaurant owner in India.

Minu Pauline owns a restaurant in Kochi, southern India. The 28-year-old restaurant owner was upset that her restaurant was throwing away a lot of food each day while many within the community were going hungry. Then she came up with an idea after watching a woman digging through the restaurant’s rubbish bags for food late one night.

“Just imagine being in the situation where you should be asleep but you feel too hungry and have to go out to find food,” she said. “It was very sad.” The experience was an eye-opener for Pauline. She realized just how much food we waste in society——including her own business, while so many people are going hungry. In response, she decided to place a refrigerator in front of her restaurant.

Once the refrigerator was in place, she encouraged customers to put whatever food they didn’t finish within. Pauline herself also put food in it. In addition, she wrote the date when the food was left in the refrigerator, so those who took it knew how long it had been there. The refrigerator was left unlocked 24 hour a day, and the food was available to anyone for free. Now the refrigerator feeds dozens of homeless people each day.

注意:

1.续写词数应为150左右;
