二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Before the print was brought to England in 1476, everything was written by hand. The few people who knew how to write were trained in schools set up by the church. Those who made a living by writing for other people were called scribes (抄写员).

The work of scribes was not easy. Much of it had to be done fast in order to meet the needs of the King. the church and traders. Most of the writing was in Latin (拉丁), but some of it was in the English of the day. And no one was quite sure how some English words should be spelled.

One problem was that several letters were written with short vertical strok (竖笔) that all looked like each other. Among them were the letters , i, u, v, m and n. Thus, five straight lines in a row might stand for uni nui uvi or mii.

As a result, reading was sometimes difficult, especially when the writing was done in a hurry.

The scribes solved (解决) the problem in part, by changing the letter u to o when it came before m, n or v. This is how sum and cum came to be written as some and come.

At some point, too, the scribes seemed to have decided that no English word should be ended by u or v. Thus, in time an e was added to such words as live, have, due and true. It was added, but not pronounced.

22、It was Ensley who made me a poet.

When I was one, my family moved into a tiny apartment off 20th Street in Birmingham. I wrote my first poem, surrounded by toys. I was 7 or 8 and the poem was for my best friend who had moved away. I was angry with him for being willing to leave me, and I got mean. I figured his leaving would be easier to face if I pushed him away first. But as soon as the moving track pulled away, I realized how foolish I'd been.

So I wrote him a poem to apologize. The poem was terrible, of course, but with it, a lifelong love affair began—not with the boy who moved away, but with the written word.

I left Birmingham after I grew up to learn how to tell true stories in prose. After college in Alabama and graduate school in Berkeley, California, I moved to Kentucky to be a newspaper reporter. My skill at writing personal essays helped me land my own column and the chance to be included in a collection of essays published by Seal Press. For so many years, I had never quit the exploration of literature.

Then I came home.

In her book Writing Down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg writes, "It is very important to go home if you want your work to be whole...You must claim where you come from and look deep into it. Come to honor and hug it, or at least, accept it."

Now in Birmingham, I get to share my story in local magazines and on my blog. And I build my story through every friendship formed in this city of steel, sweat, and sweet tea.

23、In her book, Exploring the Dangerous Trades (1943), Alice Hamilton (1869-1970) described two of her most unforgettable moments. One was her meeting with a Hungarian woman. Her husband had been badly injured in a plant and was being held at a hospital. The other memorable moment happened when she met a manager of a big white-lead ( 白铅) plant. She described him as a well-mannered gentleman. But he was shaking with anger after hearing her suggestion. She suggested that he should be responsible for his workers who experienced lead poisoning.

In 1910, she accepted the position of medical researcher for the Illinois Commission on Occupational Diseases. This new post gave Hamilton nine months to draw a direct line between disease and work. With her team members, she looked into the dangers of lead poisoning. They tracked down hospital records, and met with doctors as well as labor leaders. They visited over 300 plants.

The Illinois survey recorded 578 cases of lead poisoning. Soon Illinois passed a law requiring employers to protect their workers from being harmed by lead and other heavy metals. In 1911, the government asked her to start a nationwide study. She helped set American national safety standards.

By 1919, Hamilton, then a recognized expert in the field of industrial medicine, was invited by Harvard Medical School Dean David L. Edsall. The school officials were shocked at Edsall's decision since they had never employed a woman. Hamilton agreed to the conditions of not attending graduation or football games. Nor could she enter the teachers' club, which was open to men only.

Joe Brain was chair of the Archives Committee at the Harvard School of Public Health. He viewed Hamilton as a pioneering figure in public health, saying, “She always felt it was important to get data and do good science, but then the work wasn't really finished unless something happened ... unless you could use that knowledge to improve labor   standards and other things that were necessary.”

【1】What can we conclude from Hamilton's two memorable moments?

24、When your home becomes a tourist attraction

Have you ever looked at a beautiful little news house in London and thought “It must be so amazing to live there?”【1】 But for the people who actually do live in those homes, social media photography has changed what it means to live in a picturesque place.

Alice Johnston is a longtime resident of Notting Hill, the London neighborhood famous for pastel-painted row houses and for being the setting of the movie of the same name. Johnston, a journalist, has complicated feelings about her Instagram-beloved neighborhood. She lives on Portobello Road, one of the capital’s most famous streets. 【2】

Once, she and a friend were walking his French bulldog when a tourist asked if they could “borrow” the pup for a quick photo. The friend and the dog agreed, the Instagrammer posed with the Frenchie in front of a bright blue door and then handed over five pounds as a thank you. In that story, everybody had a good time. 【3】“I was once woken up at 6 a.m. on Easter Sunday by French teenagers taking pictures outside,” Johnston says.

【4】 Johnston tries to be sympathetic to travelers coming to her hometown, recalling how she loved taking pictures of historic neighborhoods like the Marais in Paris and Alfama in Lisbon. In fact, she recently found photos of herself as a teenager hanging out at the Notting Hill Carnival, years before she moved to the capital herself. “I love to travel, so I have to be pretty understanding when people travel to where I live, and I feel lucky that it’s cool enough that people want to come where I live.”

A.And she has witnessed all kinds of crazy behavior committed in the pursuit of the perfect snapshot.

B.But there can be a darker side to living inside what some people think is a movie set.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had been in Cancun, Mexico for a week when I lost my bag in a shopping centre. My friend and I were occupied with taking photos in front of a mural (壁画) and forgot that one of my bags was dropped in a corner. When I realized, we had walked away for at least 10 minutes. We quickly retraced our steps to the place where it had been left. By then, it was nowhere to be found. “It can’t be gone. ” I told myself. We called the phone. It didn’t get through. We started asking people around the plaza, including the security guard. After hearing my story, they only shook their heads and looked at me with pity. “Oh no, no. This is Mexico. It’s already taken and you won't get it back. I’m sorry for you,” a man who spoke English said to me. My friend Marcela helped me turn on “Find My iPhone” from her phone. My hope was once again dashed when the results returned “this device is offline”. We sent a message to the phone and left a contact number, begging the person to give back my things. Nothing. At this point, we concluded that the person must have switched off my device. They did not have good intentions. Everything was truly gone.

We walked back to our hotel and the rest of the day passed gloomily. I felt guilty, sad and a mess. That bag contained not only my phone, but also new camera gear I had bought and most of my cash. I had two weeks left in Cancun as I was on a volunteering trip. Thankfully, I had a place to stay with the rest of my volunteer family who are the sweetest people. They comforted me and helped me look on the bright side. By then I had totally given up the idea of being able to get back my things.
