21、We know that cigarette smoking kills. So, producers made electronic cigarettes as a safer smoking choice ---- safer than tobacco. Although e-cigarettes contain the drug nicotine like cigarettes, they do not use tobacco and you do not light them. They are powered by battery.
However, if e-cigarettes are so safe, why has the United States Center for Disease Control(CDC)seen an increase in telephone calls about e-cigarette poisonings?
The answer is children. Most of the calls are from people worried about children who have played with the devices. In the period of one month this year, the Center said 215 people called the Center with e-cigarette concerns. More than half of these calls were for children aged five and younger. The devices had made them sick.
Tim McAfee is director of the Center's Office on Smoking and Health. He says the problem is regulation, meaning, the U. S. federal government does not control e-cigarettes even though they contain liquid nicotine. Mr. McAfee adds that liquid nicotine is a well-known danger. Mr. McAfee explains that nicotine poisoning happens when it gets into the skin, gets into the eyes or is swallowed. It can cause stomach pain or a sense of unbalance. And too much nicotine can kill.
Tim McAfee says e-cigarettes do not create the level of risk to people that tobacco products do. He notes that almost 500,000 Americans die each year from cigarettes. "So, cigarettes are the winner in that contest." E-cigarettes do not contain hundreds of harmful chemicals that are found in real cigarettes. So, the U. S. Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak has suggested that e-cigarettes may be a useful tool for adults trying to end their tobacco use.
But McAfee worries that teenagers may think electronic cigarettes are harmless. They could become addicted to the nicotine and then start smoking real cigarettes. In other words, he fears that for young people fake e-cigarettes could be a "gateway" to the real thing.
【1】What do the producers think of e-cigarettes?
A. Dangerous. B. Expensive.
C. Safer. D. Cheaper.

23、In the morning when we arrived on foot at Dunmont the d'Urville, the French scientific base on the Adelie coast of east Antarctica, we had to break up a thin layer of ice that had formed over the hole we had drilled the day before. The hole went right through the ten-foot-thick iceberg. It was just wide enough for a man and below it lay the sea. We had never tried to dive through such a small opening. I went first. Pushing and pulling with hands, knees, heels and tips on my swim fins, I moved through the hole.
The bottom surface of the sea ice is a thick mixture of floating ice blocks and my fall had set them in motion. They were meeting on the holes as if it had been an upside-down drain(排水管). By the time I pushed one arm into the icy blocks, it was three feet thick.Grabbing the safety rope, I was scared and pulled myself up inch by inch, but my shoulders got stuck. Suddenly I was astonished by a sharp blow on the head: Cedril Gentil, one of my dive companions was trying to dig me out and his spade had struck my skull(头盖骨). Finally, a hand grabbed mine and dragged me into the air. Today's dive was over—— but it was only one of 32.
I have come here with another photographer, Vincent Munier at the invitation of film maker Luc Jacquet, who's working on a sequel (续集) to his 2005 accomplishment,March of the Penguins. While Jacquet films emperor penguins and Munier photographs them, my team will document life under the sea ice.
I've worked for decades as the deep diving photographer at first in the Mediterranean Sea, where I learned to dive thirty years ago. Later, a passion for new mysteries took me elsewhere. I have dived to 400 feet of South Africa to photograph rare coelacanths( a large fish) and for 24 straight hours off Fakarava, in French Polynesia, to witness the pairing of 17,000 groupers. But this exploration to Antarctica is unlike any other. Here we will be diving deeper than anyone has dived before under Antarctic ice —— and the conditions will be beyond harsh.
【1】Why was the layer of ice the author chose thin?
A.Because it was formed more recently.
B.Because it was near their research base.
C.Because the water there was shallower.
D.Because the temperature there was higher.
【2】What frightened the author when he wanted to return to the surface?
A.The safety rope was missing.
B.Floating ice blocks were about to fill the hole.
C.An unknown creature attacked him.
D.His workmate hit his head by tool to save him.
【3】Why did the author dive into the Antarctic?
A.To record his trouble in the sea.
B.To conduct a research under the sea.
C.To photograph the pairing of penguins.
D.To shoot the sea-born life for Jacquet.
【4】What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.Introduce his achievements.
B.Show his special interest in diving.
C.Stress that the exploration to Antarctica was unique.
D.Add some scientific background Information.
24、The full moon climbs over the eastern horizon (地平线) and hangs like a huge orange globe in the sky. A few hours later, the moon is overhead but seems to have changed. The huge orange globe has become a small silver disk. What has happened? Why has the orange color disappeared? Why does the moon seem so much smaller and farther away now that it is overhead?
The moon appears orange on the horizon because we view it through the dust of the atmosphere. The overhead moon does not really shrink as it moves away from the horizon. Our eyes inform us that the overhead moon is farther away. But in this position the moon is actually closer to our eyes than when it is near the horizon.
The change in size is a trick our eyes and minds play on us. When the moon is low in the sky, we can compare its size with familiar objects. It is easy to see that the moon is much larger than trees or buildings, for example. When the moon is high in the sky, however, it is hard to compare it with objects on earth. Compared to the vastness of the sky, the moon seems small.
There is another reason why the moon seems to shrink. We are used to staring at objects straight ahead of us. When an object is difficult to see, our eyes have to try to focus on it. When we move our heads back to look up, we will try hard again. Looking at something from an unaccustomed position can fool you into believing an object is smaller or farther away than it is. However, scientists do not yet understand completely why the moon seems to shrink as it rises in the sky.
【1】What makes us puzzled when the moon is high in the sky?
A. It looks different. B. It becomes large.
C. Its color disappears. D. Its shape changes.
【2】What really happens when the moon floats farther away from the horizon?
A. It turns orange. B. It comes nearer.
C. It goes farther. D. It gets through dust.
【3】What does the author intend to suggest by mentioning trees and buildings in Para. 3?
A. They are low on earth. B. They are large objects.
C. They can affect our judgment. D. They can attract our attention.
【4】What can we infer from the text?
A. The size of the moon often changes.
B. We do not see the moon as it really is.
C. The moon is beginning to shrink much.
D. The moon is in fact a huge orange globe.

26、His father said, “All set, boy?” and Jeremy nodded, picking up his gun with awkward gloved hands. His father pushed open the door and they went out into the freezing dawn together. Ordinarily Jeremy would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Jeremy would go duck hunting for the first time.
However, he hated it, and had hated the whole idea since his father bought him a gun. But he was determined to go through with it. He loved his father, and wanted his approval more than anything in the world.
They came to a narrow and hidden place facing the bay. Jeremy sat down nervously and waited. To reduce fear, he took a picture of his father against the clean water. Then he put the camera hurriedly on the grass and picked up his gun.
Jeremy got his gun ready. “I'll let you shoot first,” his father said, loading his own gun. “You know, I've been waiting for a long time for this day. Just the two of us..."He broke off, bending forward, eyes narrowed. “There's a small flight heading this way now. Keep your head down. I'll give you the word.”
The sun came out. Jeremy could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager; the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, “Don't let them come, please!”
But they kept coming. "Four black,” his father said. “One mallard.” High above, Jeremy heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the flight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, closer... “Get set,” his father whispered.
“Now!” cried Jeremy's father. “Take them!”
Jeremy felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. “Shoot!” said something sharply in Jeremy's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly he caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.
