二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、There’s no better way to get to know someone than to travel with them. You see people at their best, and you see them at their worst. If your potential partner sounds like any of the following, maybe rethink that big trip.

The OCD Freak

They’ll have lists of places to visit and a route so full that you won’t have time to breathe. Don’t even try to mess with their timetable or you will face their burst of anger. They are sure to be angry if things don’t go exactly to plan.

The Tightwad

“Twenty bucks? Yeah, I don’t know.” You get a sinking feeling the first time you hear a sentence like that, when you realize your travel partner has short arms and long pocket. Different travelers have different budgets, sure—but there are also people out there who just seem allergic to spending money.

The Faffer

You watch them getting ready in the morning, and you estimate how long it will be before they’ll be set to go. You think they need to put their shoes on, they need to pack a few things in their bag—should be out the door in 10 minutes. And yet, half an hour later, you’re still there sitting on the bed while they wander about the room picking things up and putting them down again, remembering things they’ve forgotten, deciding to change their outfit.

The Whinger

This is the worst. Whingers seem determined to have a bad time when they travel, no matter where they go. They seem to be able to focus on the one thing that might not have gone smoothly and make a big deal out of it. A good travel experience is all about having the right attitude, and whingers definitely do not have it.

【1】If you are going to travel with an OCD freak, you will probably ________.

A.visit all the places you want

B.need to make your own plan

C.hurry from one place to another

D.lose your temper at your partner

【2】When your travel partner is a faffer, it’s possible that he will ________.

A.forget some important things

B.waste a lot of time packing things

C.have you waiting half an hour at most

D.be prepared for the trip in the morning

【3】Who might be the last companion you want to travel with?

A.The OCD Freak

B.The Tightwad

C.The Faffer

D.The Whinger

22、My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled (翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.

As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller (耕作机) ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow com, and our favorite—red tomatoes.

As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden.

But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be.

For the first few years after he died, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the comer of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.

1Why did the author like the garden when he was a child?

A. He wanted to be a garden-crazy like his father.

B. He loved being in the garden with his father.

C. The garden was full of his favorite food.

D. The garden was just freshly tilled.

2When all the kids started their own families, the author’s father   .

A. stopped his gardening

B. turned to other hobbies

C. devoted more to gardening

D. focused on planting tomatoes

3What happened to the garden when the author’s father was seriously ill?

A. There was a great harvest.

B. The garden was almost deserted.

C. No plant grew in the garden at all.

D. The author’s son took charge of the garden.

4Why did the author start his garden with tomatoes?

A. He wanted to honor his father.

B. His son liked the fields of tomatoes.

C. He only knew how to grow tomatoes.

D. He thought tomatoes were easy to manage.

23、   The Top one has to be climate change. Greenhouse gases can stay in the environment for hundreds, even thousands of years and governments have been too slow to react-- you can't reverse the effects from one day to the next. Worst case scenario(情形) As northern countries warm up, insects will migrate there bringing a chain of deadly illness such as malaria (疟疾) and plagues. The probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes will increase, with devastating consequences—not least of which will be the huge damage- repair costs, to say nothing of the loss of lives. It’s high time we took preventative action—before it’s too late!

Nick, London

People go on about climate change but for me, the worst offender is child labour. It’s unthinkable that it still persists in this day and age! Working in a sweatshop to produce a trendy pair of trainers for some westerns, or cheap clothing, is no kind of life for a young person. The statistics speak for themselves: seventy-three million ten-to fourteen year-olds form part of the workforce worldwide—in countries such as Mali that’s fifty-four percent of children in that age group, in India it’s forty-one percent of the same age group. We need more pressure groups to campaign against importing goods made by underage workers and to support organizations such as Fairtrade that promote ethical trade and fair wages for adults.

Maria, Rome

World population has already passed the seven billion mark and it’s growing increasingly fast. Currently over 925 million people—that’s almost one in seven—have an insufficiently daily diet(less than 2100 calories a day) and this figure is going up by ten million a year! The worst-hit countries are poverty-stricken ones such as those in west Africa, Haiti and Mongolia, but conflict in places such as Sudan or Iraq has also caused widespread starvation. If this is happening when the world actually produces enough food to feed everyone (as it does presently) what will happen in the near future? We need a long-term solution—and fast.

Kelvin, Sydney

1What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To raise people’s awareness of climate change.

B.To call for preventive action to be taken immediately.

C.To share personal ideas on what global problem to address.

D.To urge the public to come up with possible solutions to global concerns.

2 Fairtrade mentioned by Maria is probably a(n) ________.

A.association that advocates the rights for labourers.

B.organization that promotes equal pay for child labourers

C.pressure group to campaign against importing cheap goods

D.Sweatshop to produce trendy pairs of trainers for westerners

3What is the biggest concern of Kelvin from Sydney?

A.More conflicts will occur due to starvation

B.There is an increasing need for high calories food.

C.The growth of population will exceed food output.

D.The number of poverty-stricken countries is on the rise.
