Having good friends can bring many of the same benefits. 【5】 Don’t panic. Research also shows that having close friends can boost your health, well-being and longevity (寿命). Make friends by signing up to groups or classes and finding people who enjoy the same things as you do.

22、“A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right", says Mollie Hunter. Born and brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly believes that there is and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market is.In Mollie’s opinion, it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which is what every writer should be doing."If you aren't telling a story, you’re a very dead writer indeed." she says. With the chief function of a writer being to entertain, Mollie is indeed an entertainer."I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language,’ she says, "This love goes back to early childhood.I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said ‘Nonsense, Mollie; dear, you’ll be a writer.’ So finally I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer."
This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical(自传体的) and gives a picture both of Mollie’s ambition and her struggle towards its achievement.Thoughts of her childhood inevitably(不可避免地) brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup(金凤花)meadows and strawberry fields—sadly now covered with modern houses."I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood.I’ll never go back, "she said."Never.When I set one of my books in Scotland” she said, “I can recall my romantic feelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at work. And that’s important because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them, as it did for us.”
【1】What does Mollie Hunter feel about the nature of a good book?
A.It should not aim at a narrow audience.
B.It should be attractive to young readers.
C.It should be based on original ideas.
D.It should not include too much conversation.
【2】In Mollie Hunter’ s opinion, which of the following is one sign of a poor writer?
A.Being poor in life experience.
B.Being short of writing skills.
C.The weakness of description.
D.The absence of a story.
【3】What do we learn about Mollie Hunter as a young child?
A.She expected to become a writer.
B.She didn’t enjoy writing stories.
C.She didn’t have any particular life aims.
D.She didn’t respect her teacher’ views.

23、We all know the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night with a pounding heart and sweaty palms. Relax, you say to yourself—it was Just a bad dream. Well, it may be that you really should relax, because nightmares might actually be good for you.
According to New York magazine, bad dreams can improve your mental health. A bad dream tends to be based on a real-life concern, for example, an approaching test or a fear of a person. To eliminate these worries the brain turns the dream into a story in the form of a bad dream.
A bad dream enables you to distance yourself from your anxieties, and tum something you're worried about now into a memory. The result is that when you wake up, you're able to move forward and face the future.
A study, featured in The Atlantic magazine, showed something similar. In a survey of more than 700 French students taking a medical school entrance exam, over 60 percent had negative dreams about the test the night before. These included not finishing on time, leaving a question blank, or being late. Those who reported dreams about the exam, even bad ones, did better on it than those who didn't, suggesting that nightmares do in fact prepare us for the failure.
"We think nightmares are so common that they have some purpose to process stressors," Anne Genuain, director of the Sleep Center at the University of Pittsburgh, said.
So, the next time you lie awake at night after a bad dream, remember that it may be the brain's way of putting your fears behind you and readying you for the future. Although a nightmare may make you afraid in the short term, it might be helping you to move on from the bad stuff you might be facing in the real world. Perhaps we should try to accept our nightmares rather than allow them to keep us awake. After all, lack of sleep causes far more problems than dreams do.

24、A dog might be man’s best friend, but my dogs are more like my kids! I think everyone should experience the unconditional love of a dog, but owning one is not for the nervousness. It’s work—especially when it comes to the job of cleaning up their waste. When you clean up after your dogs, your neighbors will love you for keeping those smelly landmines out of their yards. But there are even bigger benefits. You’ll not only be doing your part to keep bacteria out of your yard and neighborhood, you’re also keeping harmful microorganisms away from the drinking water supply.
There are more than 77 million pet dogs in the United States and their waste is found in backyards, neighborhood parks, and the green areas that frequently line small waterways. When you don’t clean up after your dog, heavy rain can carry bacteria from the waste into drains. Dog waste left in parks and other such places can be swept directly into nearby streams. This affects the quality of the water in our streams. These small channels often empty directly into our local drinking water supply or the water where we boat or fish.
Dog waste contains harmful microorganisms like roundworms that can be passed onto humans. This is why dog waste should not be used as fertilizer around your home. And it won’t fertilize your yard either if you leave it behind like other types of fertilizer. Dogs don’t eat the same kinds of natural material that cattle, horses or even elephants eat. The waste from those animals is actually beneficial for your yard and garden.
You should always pick up after your dog and throw the waste into the trash can. Some smaller cities might prefer the waste to be washed down the toilet, but in cities where there are many dogs, it’s best to send the waste to the landfill.
When you properly deal with your dog’s waste, you’ll be doing your part to keep harmful bacteria out of your yards, your neighborhoods and your drinking water.
