27、They crossed in front of me as I was driving out of the store parking lot (停车场).I would be delayed for a whole ten seconds. However,I realized that it was an elderly couple who were briefly delaying my departure (出发).No more anger.

The man leaned on his wife who walked in front of him. He not only used her for support but it was obvious that he was blind. She was his eyes as well. The two of them worked as one—each needing the other to function in this fastchanging world.

That little example of true strength that day changed my whole personal perception of life. Suddenly I wasn't so mad about having to work a few extra hours on Saturday. I had my strength, and I was still relatively young.

That picture of those two elderly people walking with dignity and strength stayed with me the entire week. My life wasn't so bad after all. I had my health and a good job. My wife always gave me good advice whenever I needed it. I started to think—not only was I lucky to have it all,but so was that wonderful old couple, who, despite the trials and hardships of a long life, still had the love and support of each other to carry them through this world.

There are so many people out there just like that couple. My wife and I sometimes picture ourselves in our old age, walking arminarm into the sunset. That image always gives us a warm feeling of comfort. Just remember, none of us would be here if it weren't for our elders. We should spend an extra minute to listen and learn when it comes to helping our elder friends. They need it.

4】What do we know about the author?

28、Late one night this spring, Justin Snider was riding the No. 2 in Manhattan when the train stopped. After about 15 minutes — with little information about the delay and no cell service — everyone in the car was getting restless. Suddenly, an inspiration struck. “I asked neighboring passengers if they wanted to hear some Shakespeare, and no one objected,” Mr. Snider said.

He had memorized Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” speech more than 15 years earlier to pass the time on a cross-country bike trip.

“I was definitely nervous because I’d never performed publicly before,” he said. Although his tired audience neglected to clap when he finished — they did applaud when the train started to move again — Mr. Snider was pleased that he didn’t forget a line.

Since ancient times, humans have memorized and recited poetry. Before the invention of writing, the only way to process a poem was to memorize it. Yet poetry memorization has become an outdated practice that many teachers and parents — not to mention students — consider too boring, mindless and just simply difficult for the modern classroom. Besides, who needs to memorize poetry when our smartphones can instantly call up nearly any published poem in the universe?

In fact, the value of learning literature by heart — particularly poetry — has only grown. All of us struggle with reducing attention spans and a public sphere (领域) that is becoming a literary wasteland, without complex language or expressions of empathy beyond one’s own online chat bubble (聊天气泡).

Rimbaud once wrote :“The lindens smell good in the good June evenings! At times the air is so scented that we close our eyes.” “He wrote that poem when he was young, and he was talking about love. I related to him,” said Ms. Huggins, the winner of the national Poetry Out Loud contest, who recited Rimbaud’s Novel. “Reciting a poem will greatly help you express what you’re trying to say.”

It’s time for us to show we care about words again to rebuild our connection to human civilization so much broader than social media feeds.

【1】Why did Justin Snider offer to recite Shakespeare?

A.To show off his good memory.

B.To kill time on a delayed train.

C.To inspire passengers to learn poems.

D.To practice making a speech in public.

【2】What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.Reciting poems isn’t a trend any more.

B.Modern students need poetry memorization.

C.Owning a poem is to store it in our smart phones.

D.The appearance of writing promotes poetry reciting.

【3】What does Ms. Huggins think of reciting poetry?

A.It can be a highly expressive act.

B.It is a matter of hard working practice.

C.It is a way to show empathy for others.

D.It can connect you with human civilization.

【4】What is the author’s attitude to memorizing poems?

A.Objective.

B.Unclear.

C.Casual.

D.Supportive.

29、Lakes that are called seas

Aral Sea

The Aral Sea is an island lake that lies to the north of Uzbekistan and to the south of Kazakhstan. Its name literally means “the sea of islands” in the Turkic languages. Although the Aral Sea occupied a vast area of about 68,000 square km for a long period of time, it has been constantly shrinking (缩小) over the past two centuries and today, it’s believed to be less than 10% of its original size.

Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is located between Israel and Jordan in the Jordan Rift Valley. As a popular tourist destination, the Dead Sea is famous for many reasons. It is actually a salt lake and one of the world’s most saline water bodies. The elevation of the Dead Sea’s shores is the lowest on land and it also enjoys the title of being the world’s deepest hyperhaline (高盐的) lake. The hypersalinity of the Dead Sea means it does not support life, hence the name.

The Jordan River is the primary source of water for the Sea of Galilee. Underground springs also feed water to the lake.

四、短文填空(共1题,共 5分)

31、DirectionsRead the following passage and fill in the blanks to complete the summary. No more than eight words for each blank.

The school that is changing American education

Two years ago, I visited a school in Brooklyn called P-TECH, the Pathways in Technology early college high school, which seemed very much like the future of education to me. It knitted together educators and job creators, giving kids not only a high school degree, but a two-year associate degree and a job guarantee at one of the country’s top blue-chip firms, IBM.

The latest great national leap forward in secondary education was during the post W.W. period, when state governments decided that high school education, previously optional, should be compulsory in order to ensure the kind of skilled workforce needed to compete in a new, higher tech industrial era. Now, many leaders---including the President, the education Secretary, scores of blue-chip CEOs and executives, and most top educators---believe we’re once again at such a turning point. When it comes to high school, an increasing number of them buy into the idea that not only should educators and job creators b e much more closely connected, but that as Stanley Litow, the IBM executive behind the program puts it,“six should be the new four.”The push for all American kids to have a post high school future, like Tennessee governor Haslam’s recent calls for two years of free community college for every student in the state, seems to come almost daily.

The statistics support it. A Four-year high school degree these days only guarantees a $15 an hour future. According to projections by the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University, the U.S. economy will create some 47-million job openings in the decade ending 2018, but nearly two-thirds will require some post secondary education. The Center projects that only 36% of American jobs will be filled by people with only a 4-year high school degree---half of what that number was in the 1970s. What’s more, the cost of not trading up educationally could be disastrous---workers with an associate degree will earn 73% more than those with only a high school diploma.

Many leaders maintain that children should 1 and that high schools should 2. The idea is based on 3. On one hand, more jobs will require 4. On the other, an associate degree will ensure 5.
