26、Is There Life on Earth

There was great excitement on the planet of Venus this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.

The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan(named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof. Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20,000 light years ago). Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information as to the feasibility(可行性)of a manned flying saucer(飞碟)landing on Earth. A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.

“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week’s satellite landing,” Pro. Zog said, “that there is no life on the Earth.”

“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked.

“For on thing, Earth’s surface in the area of Manhattan is composed of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”

“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”

“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means heavier flying saucer than we originally planned.”

“Are there any other risks that you discovered in your studies?”

“Take a look at his photo. You see this dark black cloud floating over the surface of Earth?” We call this the Consolidated Edison Belt. We don’t know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”

“If what you say is true, won’t this set back the flying saucer program several years?”

“Yes, but we shall proceed as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds.”

“Pro. Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there?

“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then. We can live anywhere.”

1The Venusians were excited this week because they __________.

A. landed a satellite with Venus astronauts on Earth

B. made a first-rate flying saucer

C. got an Earth Being to Venus

D. directed a satellite into Earth

B. Because the Earth’s atmosphere is filled with deadly gases

C. Because deadly gases is far from enough on Earth

D. Because there is no air on the planet of Earth

3The “dark black cloud” in the photograph refers to _________.

A. the polluted air floating over the surface of Earth

B. the mass of tiny drops of water floating above Earth

27、Many countries follow special customs when a child’s baby teeth fall out. Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth.

For example, Koreans have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof of a house so that a magpie (喜鹊) can take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child. This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam.

Other countries, though, have tooth customs about other animals. In Mexico and Spain, for example, it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia, it is dogs that take children’s teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed to a dog, so parents in Mongolia will put their children’s fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.

In France and the USA, a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know. It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies; however, in the United States, she may leave money.

28、The email request came into Ekiben restaurant in Baltimore late on a Thursday afternoon in March: tempura broccoli (天妇罗西兰花) topped with fresh herbs and diced onion. The man who sent the email didn’t actually want the food itself. He was writing for his mother-in-law, who liked the dish. He went on to explain that she was now in the final stages of lung cancer (肺癌) at her home in Vermont and that he was hoping to get the recipe (食谱) to make it for her there.

Steve Chu, one of the restaurant’s co-owners, read the email and quickly replied with a suggestion. “Thanks for asking for help,” he wrote. “We’d like to meet you in Vermont and make it fresh for you.”

Brandon Jones, the son in-law, was stunned. “I emailed back, saying, ‘You do know that this is Vermont we’re talking about, right?’” says Brandon. “But Steve said, ‘No problem. You tell us the date, time, and location and we’ll be there.’”

For the past six years, every time Brandon’s mother in-law visited Baltimore, the first place she wanted to go was Ekiben so she could order that one dish.

Chu, with his team, drove on Saturday to the apartment where Brandon’s mother-in-law lived. After boxing everything up, they knocked on their customer’s door.

“As soon as she opened the door, she recognized the smell,” Brandon says. “It smelled amazing.” Rina Jones, Brandon’s wife, says her mother also recognized Chu and his co-workers. “My mom kept saying, ‘I don’t understand. You drove all the way up here to cook for me?’ She was so happy and touched. She couldn’t believe it.”

The Joneses invited Chu and his team to join them for dinner, but they needed to get back to Baltimore. “It was an honor to help make the family’s wishes come true,” Chu says. “This is about her, not us. There was a lot of good energy in doing this.”

29、Carl Allamby, owner of two auto-repair shops with 11 employees, had become anxious, wishing for something more. At first, he thought it must have to do with growing his business even further. Therefore, the Ohio resident decided to go for his bachelor's degree in business management.

After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told, unexpectedly, he had to take biology to get his degree. It turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. The biology class rekindled a childhood aspiration that he had put away somewhere deep within himself. “After the first day, I remembered this feeling of wanting to be a doctor back,” Allamby says.

Growing up in a poor African American neighborhood, he faced low expectations and numerous barriers to pursuing his dream. His school didn't offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a medical path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove unsafe—students who brought books back home would always be robbed. So he set aside thoughts of becoming a doctor in favor of a more realistic career path—fixing cars.

Years later, a different Carl Allamby, with the support of his wife and family, decided to skip business school in favor of the science classes he'd need for a second career as a health-care worker.

And in 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, selling his two shops and everything that was in them. Then he started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. At the age of 47, as a medical doctor, he took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.

“I heard so many that say you couldn't or shouldn't be a doctor”, he says. “Whether it's because of my age, my race, my upbringing, my past career—these are all good reasons why I shouldn't be here. And yet, here I am.”
