27、Will your job be done by a robot in the future? Bank of England economists predict that almost half of all UK jobs are under threat of robots. Those most at risk are physical labor, such as factory workers. But could even teachers soon have to compete against powerful electronic educators?

At fist sight, teaching might seem impossible to be replaced by robots. Teachers use a lot of soft skills. Those skills are hard to be copied by machines. They judge students’ needs and adapt materials to make them more effective. And they provide special care: looking out for students who drop behind or make trouble in class.

Anyhow, some believe the future of education will be technological. In an interview, futurist Thomas predicts that “by 2030 the largest company on the Internet is going to be an education-based company that we haven’t heard of yet.”

He thinks that online robot teachers will make education so efficient that students will be able to finish an entire undergraduate degree in six months of learning. A robot teacher learns what your “characters”, “interests” and “reference points” are, “and it knows how to teach you in a faster and faster way over time,” according to Thomas.

Over the last decade, there has been a huge increase in online learning. Many companies produce courses that allow millions to learn at home for free, at their own pace. But there are limitations. Without the face-to-face encouragement of a classroom environment, most of the students fail to complete online courses. How to encourage students to learn is one more skill that online teachers will need to master.

Indeed, Thomas admits there is some way to go and he thinks that we should hug the change, even though people will lose their jobs.

28、A couple has completed a tiring 4,500-mile bike ride around Europe in the shape of an enormous bicycle, in a creative attempt to promote sustainable travel.

Accompanied by their dog Zola, David Smith, 35, and Arianna Saraghi, 40, rode through seven countries to create the striking image, motivated by their desire to raise awareness about climate change. After completing their 7237-kilometer journey earlier this week, the pair said they had narrowly beaten the Guinness World Record for the largest GPS drawing made by any mode of transport.

They are also, unsurprisingly, confident that they have traced the biggest ever GPS bicycle, estimating that theirs is roughly 600 miles wide. “Being able to see it on^ the map is mainly a relief,” Ms Saraghi said after recounting the problems they had along the way.

They initially set off in the summer of 2019, armed with a computer-designed route which they had followed to avoid cycling through Paris’Charles de Gaulle Airport. However, they were forced to stop after Ms Saraghi sustained a knee injury.

The Anglo-Italian couple tried again that winter, before giving up because it was too cold to camp. The Covid-19 pandemic then delayed the trip’s completion by another two years. “We had so many obstacles. When we started this time we were thinking—what can go wrong this time? We felt we had let people down by not completing it, and our life felt kind of stuck. So we’re very happy,” Ms Saraghi said.

The pair said they want people who see the GPS image to consider cycling shorter journeys rather than choosing to drive. “Cycling is cheaper, it’s healthy, it’s fun, and it’s often pretty fast. Please give it a second and consider if there is an alternative to the car- there may not be, but often there is,” Mr Smith told The Independent. The 35-year-old added that they also hope politicians, who come across their GPS bicycle are motivated to improve cycling infrastructure (基础设施) to encourage the public to travel sustainably where possible.

【1】What was the purpose of the couple’s bike ride?

A.To enjoy a journey with their dog.

B.To encourage green travel on bikes.

C.To give warnings on climate change.

D.To create a striking means of transport.

【2】What does the couple think of their journey?

A.Long and comfortable.

B.Creative and inspiring.

C.Relaxing and relieving.

D.Challenging and profitable.

【3】Why do the couple feel happy?

A.They successfully improved public facilities.

B.They let people down due to many obstacles.

C.They realized the dream of changing their life.

D.They finally meet the expectation of the public.

【4】Which of the following would the couple agree with?

A.In many cases cycling can be an alternative to driving.

B.The GPS bicycle can inspire people to give up driving.

C.Better urban infrastructure prevents sustainable travel.

D.Cycling is cheaper, funnier and faster than driving a car.

29、

More than 215 pilot whales died after beaching themselves on the Chatham Islands over the weekend. The pilot whales started to become stranded (搁浅的) on the remote islands’ northwest last Friday, according to the Department of Conservation (DoC).

Because of the isolation of the Chatham Islands and an active shark population, it is considered too dangerous to actively refloat stranded whales. Unless they are naturally refloated by the tides, all of them will die.

“We do not actively refloat whales on the Chatham Islands due to the risk of shark attack to both humans and the whales themselves,” DoC said in a statement.

“All the stranded pilot whales are now dead and their bodies will be left to decompose naturally on site.”

A department team was being organized in response to the latest stranding. They will probably be tasked with euthanising (使安乐死) whales that remain stranded.

The Chatham Islands, 840km east of mainland New Zealand, and a resident population of less than 800 people, are “a stranding hotspot, among the top three places for strandings in New Zealand”, according to the conservation department. The islands are the site of the biggest recorded stranding in New Zealand history – an estimated 1,000 pilot whales in 1918.

Pilot whales — which can grow to more than six metres (20 feet) long — are also highly sociable, so they may follow podmates (同伴) who fall into danger.

In New Zealand, about 300 animals beach themselves annually, according to official figures, and it is not unusual for groups of between 20 and 50 pilot whales to run aground.

Why these strandings occurred – and also why they sometimes met with similar strandings in southern Australia – remained a largely unanswered question.

【1】Which of the following blocks the refloating work?

A.The shark attack.

B.The department team.

C.The climate there.

D.The power of the tides.

【2】What does the underlined word “decompose” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

B.It is the biggest stranding of all time.

【4】What is the text?

A.A rescue story.
