二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、Plastic is under attack these days for the environmental problems it causes. But sustainability-minded shoppers might not be aware that many organic farmers — like their traditional farming neighbors — also rely on plastic. It’s spread over the ground as a form of mulch (覆盖物) to control weeds, conserve water and aid plant growth.

The flat plastic prevents sunlight from hitting the ground and encouraging weed growth. In addition to weed control, plastic works well with drip irrigation (滴灌), a system that conserves water by delivering it directly to plant roots. And the plastic also control soil temperature in ways that increase harvest for farmers. Heat-loving crops — like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants — will mature weeks earlier on plastic versus bare ground.

Yet there is the disturbing problem of waste. At the end of the season, the vast majority of the plastic is lifted from the ground and then taken to landfills, meaning a major cost and labor challenge for farmers.

That’s why so many farmers want an alternative. Although natural mulches like straw (稻草) and paper that break down in the soil do exist, they are too costly or for many farmers. But if a plastic mulch could slowly degrade (降解) over the course of the season, disappearing into the field and reducing waste, it would be a dream solution.

Right now, however, no such solution exists for organic farms, because the biodegradable plastic mulches on the market all contain petroleum-based materials. According to the law, any biodegradable mulch could only be used if it was 100 percent “bio-based” — that is, made entirely from plant materials. Hopefully, a company would bring a bio-based mulch to market — one that acts like plastic but doesn’t contain any petroleum-based materials and so would be approved for use in organic farming.

【1】What can be inferred from paragraph 1?

A.Plastic causes no environmental problems.

B.Plastic bags are still used by many shoppers.

C.Plastic is spread over plants to control weeds.

D.Plastic is used in traditional and organic farming.

【2】What is a benefit of plastic used in farming?

A.It allows sunlight to hit the ground.

B.It helps some plants to mature earlier.

C.It is does harm to heat-loving crops.

D.It protects plant roots from getting damaged.

【3】Why do many farmers want an alternative mulch?

A.Because plastic mulch breaks down easily.

B.Because plastic mulch ends up as waste.

C.Because they prefer natural mulches.

D.Because they have less space for landfills.

【4】What can we learn about the biodegradable mulches on the market?

A.They are made entirely from plant materials.

B.They contain no petroleum-based materials.

C.They are not 100 hundred percent “bio-based”.

D.They would be allowed for use in organic farming soon.

27、Should we save endangered languages?

I met Ariep on an island in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu. Being the last fluent Naati speaker in the area, he sorrowfully expressed his fear that, with his death, the language would no longer exist.

Naati is just an example of endangered languages. Today, 50% to 90% of the world's languages are considered at risk of falling out of use by the end of the century.

Over the last 10 years, this crisis has attracted more public attention. While we praise previous efforts made to protect dying languages native to specific places and spoken by aboriginal(土著的)people, let's stop and ask: Why does it matter?

Should Naati's fate concern the world? Many speakers of endangered languages, including Ari-ep, communicate fluently in other languages. Is the hope of “saving” these small languages just a romantic idea of unrealistic scholars?

As a linguist, I'm on the opposite side of those answering “yes”. I understand how critical and urgent language loss is. Individual communities rely on languages to form culture and identity, and for the global community languages are an invaluable source of information about human cognition(认知).

If a language is lost, the relevant community heritage will disappear. For instance, people who speak Lulamogi in Uganda feel anxious that as people forget the terms describing methods of catching and eating while ants, they will also forget this important cultural practice. Language loss also means a loss of community identity and self-determination. Measuring their exact damage is hard, but the loss indeed harms the well-being of community members. By contrast, the ability of community members to speak their native language together enhances well-being. In British Columbia, re-search has proved that the young generations in communities where at least 50% of the people speak the native language tend to exhibit a stronger sense of well-being and more optimistic attitudes to-ward life.

When a language is disappearing, more is lost than just certain bits of information. Under-standing language is vital to understanding human cognition. Every language presents us with apiece of the puzzle for finding out how language works in our mind, without which we are prevented from seeing the full picture.

For everyone's sake, we must preserve the world's languages to ensure linguistic diversity for future generations.

【1】What does the underlined word “ it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Ariep's fear.

B.Naati's fate.

【2】What are the consequences of language loss?

①Broken dreams of scholars.

②Loss of information sources.

28、   Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t collecting memories a way of preserving the past?

When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name any place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the light of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen…

At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the boring characterizations I had set down in my diary.

Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations (经典语录) that touch me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.

I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won’t have as many exact representations of people and placesmaybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don’t live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves.

1Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ______.

A.observing her school routine B.expressing her satisfaction

C.impressing her classmates D.preserving her history

2What does the author put in her diary now?

A.Notes and beautiful pictures. B.Special thoughts and feelings.

C.Detailed accounts of daily activities. D.Descriptions of unforgettable events.

3The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is ______.

A.to experience it B.to live the present in the future

C.to make memories D.to give accurate representations of it

29、How do you make sure whether a watermelon is perfectly ripe? Well, one theory is that if you knock hard on the outside, the sound you hear will help determine if it’s ready to eat. That theory led to a huge online debate in China about what kind of people tend to engage in the art of “watermelon knocking”.

The discussion, which thousands of people contributed to on the Chinese micro-blogging site Sina Weibo, was kicked off by an unknown event thousands of miles away in Italy.

It all began when a Chinese social media user posted the picture of a sign in an Italian supermarket asking customers not to knock on the watermelons. The sign was stuck in a full box of watermelons which read, “Please stop knocking on the watermelons. They will not respond to it!”

There was no indication that the supermarket was targeting this message at customers with Chinese heritage. The sign was in Italian, not Mandarin. But somehow it was taken as an attack on a practice which some Chinese observers regarded as being unique to their national customs.

Many shared jokes aimed at the supermarket sign.

Online users are keen to show they know better, especially on the subject of watermelons.

A quick online search will reveal that Chinese social media users are not alone in their thinking. Watermelon knocking and listening for a hollow sound is indeed a nearly universal concept. It even appears in films. The popular Russian cartoon, Nu, pogodi!, includes watermelon knocking as part of an episode.

There are no absolute guarantees about what to do when it comes to choosing fruit. But at the risk of causing an international diplomatic incident we would suggest some common ground about what to look for to choose the perfect watermelon.

Feel the weight of the melon. The heavier, the better.

Press on the watermelon. It should feel firm and if it springs back, it’s ready to eat.

Look at the markings on the melon. A yellow patch on one end indicates it’s ready.

Of course if all these fail, you could always, knock and wait for a reply.

【1】What was the cause of the heated discussion?

A.Whether the watermelon is ripe.

B.The art of watermelon knocking.

C.The picture of a sign in an Italian supermarket.

D.The traditional Italian customs in the supermarket.

【2】The author writes the article in a(n) ________ way.

A.serious

B.approving

C.critical

D.humorous

【3】Which method of selecting watermelon is not suggested by the author in the text?

A.Pressing

B.Observing markings

C.Feeling the weight

D.Waiting for a response

【4】What is the purpose of this text?

A.To present a research result.

B.To give practical advice by telling a story.
