21、“Homestay” is a form of study abroad program. It allows the visitor to rent a room from a local (当地的) family to better understand the local lifestyle. It also helps to improve the visitor’s language ability, ” said a teacher during a school meeting last term. “Students who wish to learn more about foreign cultures or to get foreign experience should join this kind of holiday. I am sure you won’t be disappointed (失望的). ”
After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, I had a chance at last to go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to London, a place where I had wanted to go since years ago.
As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked after us. After we got to London, we went to stay with different families. I was lucky that my host family (寄宿家庭) was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.
The holiday was filled with activities every day. After breakfast, a local teacher would come to take us in his car. Then we would have classes or go on a sight-seeing trip to different places of interest like the Big Ben, the London Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace. We would go back to our own homes after the activities.
The holiday was a valuable experience for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yet, time really flew fast. Three weeks later, we had to leave “home” for Hong Kong.

Our polite, little phrases
Many of us share these kinds of verbal habits: pausing at certain moments, filling in sentences with extra words or qualifying statements to make them sound more honest.
For example, have you ever been told by your friend: “I am only telling you this because I care about you—you really need to lose weight”? Or, by your classmate: “No offense, but to be perfectly honest, you’ve done a terrible job”?
These speech acts are called “verbal tee-ups”, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article. They are like cushions meant to soften bad or unpleasant news. Other verbal tee-ups include: “Don’t take this the wrong way, but…”, or “Don’t get mad, but…”.
For speakers, verbal tee-ups make it easier to say difficult things. They sound formal and polite. But aren’t they dishonest?
According to James W. Pennebaker, Psychology Department chair at the University of Texas at Austin, US, these phrases “are to formalize social relations so you don’t have to reveal your true self”, he told The Wall Street Journal.
However, Anne Curzan, professor of English at the University of Michigan, US, says that verbal tee-ups are a bit like traffic signals. “If we know that we’re about to say something potentially damaging, it can be nice to give the listener a moment to prepare for the message,” she wrote in the article Verbal Tee-ups: A More Positive Spin, published in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Curzan gives an example. Suppose she needs an extension from an editor because she can’t get her article done on time. She might start her request with “I’m sorry to have to ask…”, or “I understand if this isn’t possible…”.
She could just say: “I need an extension”. But that doesn’t “feel very polite”, Curzan noted. Instead, it’s “sudden” and doesn’t “give the editor any choice”.
【1】What’s the purpose of pausing at certain moments and fill in sentences with extra words?

23、Many kids do housework such as doing the dishes, making the bed, and folding the clothes. In exchange, they get some money or other computer time.
Paying kids for housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think since adults are paid to do their jobs, we should pay kids for everyday housework.
But some people don't think kids should get rewards(报酬)for doing housework. Susie Walton, an expert, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of housework is a team effort,” Walton said. "A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities(责任)in the house, and families decide how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like what they want."
Other people believe that getting a reward encourages kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps that gives kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑现)either online or in the real world. “Our goal is to give kids lawful power so they can get rewards,” says Chris Bergman. “And kids need rewards to help encourage them.”

24、The cost of medical care in the United States is very high. The time and money that doctors spend on their medical education is probably one reason for this problem.
A visit to a doctor’s office costs from 15 to 50 dollars. It’s so expensive. Many people in the United States think that doctors are overpaid. However, most doctors disagree. They say that they were asked to study medicine for a long time. Tuition for many years of medical education costs a lot of money. Doctors say that it is necessary for most medical students to borrow money from the bank to pay their tuition. Because their money must be repaid to the bank, young doctors need to receive a lot of money for their work. So they charge(收费)people high prices for medical care.
