21、   As I enjoyed the soft sunshine in the pool, my 8-year-old daughter swam up behind me.

"Guess who, Mommy?" she said.

"No idea. Who is this mystery (神秘的) person?" I joked.

The pair of us talked and laughed together for the rest of the afternoon.

"Remember this," I told myself. "You are happy, right here, right now."

Fast forward a few months, and my thoughts sounded different.

"Just keep going," I would think, or, "How many sleeps until the weekend?"

I didn't like what I was likesomeone sleepwalking (梦游) through the week, running on coffee and too tired at night to do anything but watch TV. I thought the Christmas break would recognize (使再次充满活力) me, making me ready to take on another year of early starts. But I had to listen to my heart.

My patient husband and friends had listened to me going over the decision for six months, but the time for talking was over. It was time to make my choice: My daughter needed me and I needed her.

Life is never simply a choice between job and family. Ask anyone, and family always comes first.

Besides, I'm not disappearing there are plenty of projects to keep me fulfilled.

22、In 2007, Barrington Irving became the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He was just 23 years old—and he built the plane himself. How did he achieve this?

Irving’s interest in flying started when he was 15. He was working in his parents’ bookstore in Miami, Florida. One of the customers was a pilot. Gary Robinson. One day, Robinson asked Irving if he was interested in flying. Irving didn’t think he was smart enough. But the next day, Robinson took Irving to an airport. He showed Irving inside the cockpit(驾驶舱)of a Boeing 777. That experience changed Irving’s life.

Irving really wanted to fly, but flight school was expensive. To achieve his dream, he worked different jobs. He washed airplanes and cleaned swimming pools. At home he practiced flying on a video game. In the end, he got enough money for flight school.

At flight school, Irving achieved his dream of learning how to fly. But he wasn’t finished. Next, he planned to build his own plane and fly alone around the world.

Building the plane was difficult. Irving asked more than 50 companies for airplane parts. Most said no, but he persisted(顽强地坚持)in asking. Three years later, he had parts worth $300,000. Columbia, an airplane company, agreed to build a plane using the parts. Soon, his airplane was ready to fly.

On March 23, 2007, Irving began his round-the-world trip. After 97 days-with 145 hours in the air-he landed back in Miami. A crowd of cheering people were there to welcome him.

Irving saw many young people in the crowd, and this had a powerful effect(影响)on him. He wanted to use his experience to help other young people achieve their own dreams.

“Everyone told me what I couldn’t do.” says Irving. “They said I was too young, that I didn’t have enough money. But even if no one believes in your dream,” he says, “you have to pursue(追求)it.”

24、Shirley, an elephant, has something to say. She opens her mouth and speaks. The nearby elephants understand the sound, but it is just noise to me.

What is Shirley exactly saying? Scientists are not sure, but they are trying to find out how elephants communicate. I visited Shirley at the Elephant Sanctuary (避难所) in Hohenwald, Tennessee. The sanctuary is home of Shirley and five other elephants —Bunny, Jenny, Sissy, Tarra and Winkie. All six animals were once in zoos or circuses (马戏团). Now they walk freely in the forests.

A noisy group

Not all the elephants speak like Shirley. Tarra speaks like a sea lion when she is happy. Bunny squeaks (吱吱叫) often. I soon get used to hearing the different voices of the elephants. When one gray giant comes close to me, I know which elephant it is.

Elephants also communicate in a way that people can’t hear. Scientists believe that elephant’s sound can travel for miles. Elephants in a group use it to keep in touch when they are alone.

       Old friends

The elephants speak to one another for the same reasons people talk. Sometimes they even shout with excitement. When Shirley first came to the sanctuary, Jenny looked at her and began to shout. Shirley shouted back. At first, the animal keepers had no idea what it was about. Later, they discovered that Shirley and Jenny had stayed together for 20 years earlier in a circus. They still knew each other.
