From November 1st to December 10th in 2020, China started its seventh national population census (普查). 7 million census takers have asked each family about their name, gender (性别), age, education, job and so on. This census is different from the ones in the past. For the first time, citizens were encouraged to use smart phones to record their information.

China has a national population census every 10 years. The first one was done in 1953. At that time, there were about 600 million people in China. But China’s population has increased. It was about 1.37 billion in 2010.

For the 2020’s national population census, all residents (居民) of China were included in the census. But Chinese citizens (公民) who had settled (定居) abroad and foreign citizens who were staying in China on either business or tourist visas (签证) were not counted.

“The census is very important for every citizen, said Ning Jizhe, director of the NBS.” It will help improve infrastructure (基础建设) and public services. For example, if census results show that there are many children living in acertain area, the government will know that it should build more schools there. Scientists can also learn more about population growth from the census. In some years, the population grows faster than in others. Wang Qi, 14

I love taking online courses. They give me a lot more choices and freedom. We can choose to learn whatever we want. Also, online classes enable us to study whenever and wherever we want, which is very convenient.

Wu Jun, 13

I don’t think taking online classes is a good way to study. There are many temptations (诱惑) on the internet. Students can be distracted (使分心) from their courses easily. The whole learning process is not as organized as it is in the classroom.

Online classrooms are beneficial (有益的). We might feel more focused on (集中于) learning when we are alone in front of a computer with no one to distract us. In addition, taking courses online also means we can have more time to use a computer, which is a good way to practice our computer skills.

Li Chunjie, 14

27、There is a saying that “earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.” It seems sadly true. Thousands of people died under bricks (砖块) of the damaged (毁坏的) buildings during the recent earthquakes. Is there a way to build earthquake-proof (抗震) buildings? Engineers have some life-saving ideas.

“Lift” the house up

To prevent earthquake waves from going through the building, one way is to “lift” the building’s foundation above the ground. The building can be built on top of pads (垫状物), which are usually made up of steel and rubber. During earthquakes, only the pads move and the building stays steady (平稳的). This can reduce the strength of earthquake waves by 13 to 15 percent, according to the website Bethinking the Future.

Right materials

Earthquake-proof materials must be easy to bend (弯曲) without breaking. Some of these materials include steel, wood and bamboo. In Japan, most traditional houses are built with wood. During earthquakes, wooden buildings bend to avoid building up stress. Steel is one of the main materials of modern tall buildings because it can increase their ductility (延展性).

Dome house

A Japanese company has made dome-shaped houses with styrofoam. Styrofoam is a very light material. The whole house weighs only 80 kilograms. So when earthquakes happen, the house will not hurt people.

Besides, there are many other good ideas on building earthquake-proof buildings. For example, a company in America is developing magnetic field (磁场) technology that can raise houses above ground when earthquakes happen. We hope these ideas can be put in action and more people’s lives can be saved.

A.They can sound a warning when earthquakes happen.

【3】Why can the pads help buildings stay steady in an earthquake?

A.Because they can stop the ground movement.

B.Because they can lift up buildings far from the ground.

C.Because they can reduce the strength of earthquake waves.

D.Because they can make the buildings’foundations hold onto the ground.

【4】What do we know about Japan’s traditional houses?
