24、The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was going to hand out the final exam papers. "I know how hard you have all worked to prepare for this test," he said. "And because I know you are all able to understand these questions, I am ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test."
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the rest students and said, "Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance." Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life's lessons, whether from school education or from events is in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now, and you realize that you have some limits (局限). However, there is nothing you can't do. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰) said, "We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves."

A. Because they knew the teacher didn't like them to take the test.
B. Because they were allowed to take another easier exam later on.
C. Because they were happy with the mark the teacher would give them.
D. Because they thought the exam was too easy to be worth a try.
【2】Why did the teacher give the rest students an A?
A. Because they answered all the questions in the exam correctly.
B. Because they had been promised an A by the teacher before.
C. Because they had been working hard for each exam.
D. Because they were confident in what they had learned.
【3】What does the underlined word "conquer" mean in the passage?
A. 发现 B. 控制 C. 探索 D. 征服
【4】What is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A. He wants us to know what our limits are.
B. He wants us to learn to believe in ourselves.
C. He wants us to receive formal education.
D. He wants us to learn from B students.

27、It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War 3. She’ll talk about my not very bright future because I don't plan to be a doctor, and much to her disappointment, I don't want to do any job related to science, either. In fact when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s(同事) son?” she bemoans all the time. Her co-worker's son received a four-year scholarship(奖学金) and is now making 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don't know what to answer except that I just can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker's son. I can't be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of honor or money.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her little money and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am. And usually comes home around 5 pm. or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that if I become a doctor, it doesn't mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.
