26、 Selena Gomez and I were scheduled to meet at a low-key coffee shop in Encino. Not wanting to keep the superstar waiting, I arrived at nine, 20 minutes early. As I was catching up on e-mails, Selena quietly scooted into the seat next to me. No bodyguard. Not even a drop of makeup. She was ten minutes early and so inconspicuous that no one else in the restaurant looked up so much. Selena was wearing Bebe shorts. She had a baby face and ordered a hot chocolate.
After making small talk about what she wore for the shoot, she dived into the subject of her career. Selena declared 2012 the year of movies. She filmed three: Spring Breakers, a drama; The Getaway, an action flick; and Hotel Transylvania, a comedy. Each is a marked move away from the teen style that made her a household name.
Now that her Disney days are behind her, Selena is at that unstable point in a child star's career where she is trying to grow up-both as a person (she turned 20 in July) and as an artist. “Being part of the Disney Channel was a blessing, and I'm super happy with what my show accomplished, but acting is something I would like to take on more seriously.” She continued, “I don't necessarily feel accomplished. I want to create a whole different persona when it comes to acting.”
Selena has been working full time since she was seven years old and scored a role on Barney & Friends. In 2007, when she was offered the lead in Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena, her mother, and her stepfather uprooted from Grand Prairie, Texas, to LA, where they are settling now.

27、 I want to share with you a story from 28 years ago. My dad was a used car salesman. Every Thursday night, he would head off to Shreveport, LA for an auction (拍卖会). Most of the time, I drove a car over there for him so he could sell it at the auction.
One day I was riding with my dad when he noticed a hitch-hiker(搭便车的人) with a backpack. Without hesitation, he pulled the car over and offered him a ride. Dad asked him his name, and proceeded to talk to him about all sorts of things. Dad asked him where he was going. The hitch-hiker told him that he was heading for the west. I can’t recall why but he told Dad a lot of things that had occurred to him and that persuaded him to make that decision. He talked about the tragic events that occurred to him several years before. He was in low spirits, but I could see that the hitch-hiker’s attitude was changing as someone was really listening to him.
We drove 45 minutes before the hitch-hiker got off. We pulled over and Dad told him to keep his head up and things would start looking up for him soon. He reached into his pocket and handed the hitch-hiker a twenty-dollar bill. The guy smiled. He nearly lit up right there on the cold, dark highway.
We drove on and my dad did not say a single thing. I was still completely amazed by what I had just witnessed. I was always told by everyone never to pick up a hitch -hiker and yet my dad did it every single time he saw one. While reflecting upon that story I came to understand that just one single kind act could change someone’s life, and I am sure that my father’s deed made that poor man’s day.

28、 Many parents have the experience of watching their children put off important schoolwork or studying until it is a stressful situation. In fact, procrastination (拖延症) isn’t just unpleasant.
【1】 Here is some bad influence of procrastination:
Everything takes longer than it needs to.
The most obvious problem with procrastination is that it wastes time. 【2】 Dinner that can be finished within half an hour takes one hour. Often, children who procrastinate do everything school-related at the last minute-or worse-they run out of hours in the day and waste away all their time.
Children keep themselves from being a better person.
What children don’t realize when they repeatedly procrastinate is that they are not reaching their potential (潜力). The time they waste instead of spending doing what they need to do is the time when they could improve themselves. 【3】.
Procrastination puts children in the bad situation of having something to do and not enough time to do it. 【4】 In the end, this can cause children to feel disappointed (失望的) in themselves.
【5】
If a child keeps waiting until the last minute to study and do homework, how can he or she earn a good grade? In the long run, children simply cannot reach goals they set for themselves.
A.It can be very harmful.

29、Dear Leilei,
The big eyes. . . the pointed ears. . . the soft hair. Cats are adorable, and I can understand why you want one.
If you are struggling to be persuasive, this is what you should do. Try to convince them that getting a cat will benefit them. Don’t constantly shout at them demanding a cat, but walk softly, be quiet and clever, like a cat in the night. Explain to them how much happier they will be with a cat, and how after a long day of work a little kitten would be the perfect friend to greet them.
Besides, it’s not enough to say that you want a cat because you like them. You must be more imaginative in convincing them how it will benefit you. A line I would use would be “If I get a cat, my grades will be better.”
Maybe a cat can help provide you with support when you are in your room alone for long periods of time doing your homework or revising, or that experience with a real animal will help you understand the animal kingdom for biology.
If they don’t give in to you and you still have a fondness for cats, then why not visit a friend who has one? It’s true that a cat doesn’t need a daily walk like a dog, but having any pet is a lot of responsibility, involving endless cleaning and feeding for your furry friend. Also, the number of cat cafes nowadays means that there are lots of opportunities to play with them and you do not have the messy task of cleaning up after them.
Sophie
