Focus on mental health

At some point in life, many people suffer a mental disturbance. While most people get over it, for others it doesn’t go away easily.

Oct 10 was World Mental Health Day. This year, the theme was “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World”.

The World Health Organization says that about 20 percent of children and teenagers worldwide suffer from mental illness. It’s thought that the number of children and teenagers with mental illness around the world will increase by half by 2020. It will become one of the main causes of diseases, disabilities and even death.

In China, the picture isn’t bright, either. About 30 million Chinese children and teenagers under the age of 17, or 10 percent of children and teenagers in China, have a mental health challenge, reported China Daily.

The reason for mental problems among young people may be the increasing pressure in life.

The world is changing fast. Study and relationships have always caused stress, but today the stress is much higher than before, the WHO said.

The Young Foundation, a UK-based non-profit think tank, says that young people today have huge stresses at school. For instance, they experience bullying and body image issues. In a 2017 report, the foundation noted that the internet was a special source of stress. Online, young people often see “messages about perfection” and this causes the young “great uncertainty about their adult futures”, says the foundation.

Also, according to China Daily, Chinese people don’t seek help with their mental problems. They fear that others will think less of them if they admit that they are in trouble. Elaine Peng, a US mental health educator, makes a similar point. She thinks that many Chinese people are ashamed of their mental problems. Peng told Xinhua that mental illness “is taboo in many Chinese families”.

In the UK, over three-quarters of young people believe their mental health problems have a social stigma. YouGov, a UK-based data company, reported in 2017 that a quarter of young UK people wouldn’t ask for help if they developed a mental problem.

Young people who don’t seek help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future. Jagannath Lamichhane, a mental health expert in Nepal, warned that, “If we hide our mental health, it may remain a problem forever.”

“My message for young people is, if you feel something is wrong within you—seek help,” he told NPR.

23、   Once a little boy wanted to meet Love. He knew it was a long trip to where Love lived, so he got his things ready with some pizzas and drinks and started off. When he passed three streets, he saw an old woman sitting in the park and watching some birds. She looked very hungry. The boy gave her a pizza. She took it and smiled at him. The smile was so beautiful that he wanted to see it again, so he gave her a Coke. She smiled once again. The boy was very happy.

They sat there all the afternoon, eating and smiling, but they said nothing. When it grew dark, the boy decided to leave. But before he had gone more than a few steps(), he turned around, ran back to the old woman and gave her a hug(拥抱). The woman gave him her biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door of his house, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face and asked what had made him so happy. “I had lunch with Love. She has got the most beautiful smile in the world.” At the same time, the old woman’s son was also surprised at his mother’s pleasure and asked why. “I ate a pizza in the park with Love,” she said, “and he is much younger than I expected.”

24、The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of (短缺) water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can’t drink or use for watering plants directly (直接地). Man can only drink and use the 3% — the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can’t even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted (污染).

Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid (避免) a serious water shortage later on? First, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making studies in the field. Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again. Even if (即使) every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What could people turn to next?

The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it’s already used in many parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we’ll be in no danger of drying up.

【1】The world is thirsty because ________.

A.3/4 of the earth is covered with water

B.we have enough sea water to use directly

C.we haven’t used all the water in rivers and lakes

D.about 97% of water on the earth can’t be drunk or used for watering plants directly

【2】Which of the following is true ?

A.3% of water on the earth is in rivers and lakes.

B.75% of water on the earth is the sea.

C.97% of the earth is covered with water.

D.3% of water on the earth is sea water.

【3】From the passage we learn _________.

A.if every city reuses its water, we’ll be in no danger of drying up

B.man can only drink and use about 25% of water on the earth

C.today in most large cities water is used only once

D.water can be used only once

【4】To avoid the serious water shortage, which of the following is the most important?

A.Save water and try to make good use of the water in rivers and lakes.

B.Don’t pollute water and keep all rivers and lakes clean.

C.Make dirty water clean and then reuse it.

D.Try to find a cheaper way to get the salt out of the sea water.

【5】The name of the passage would be ________.

A.The Sea Water
