Hong Kong China

April 10th 2019

ABC Travel

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to complain(抱怨) about the 5-day trip to London organized by your company last month.

On the first day, March 15, the tour guide should have brought us to London bridge and Buckingham Palace(白金汉宫) but he didn't. He said we couldn't visit those places, because it was raining. But in fact it was just cloudy! We stayed at the hotel all day! The next day, we only visited one place, not the four places on the schedule(计划表). The tour guide told us to go shopping by ourselves most of the time during the next 3 days.

The food was terrible during the trip. We wanted to try traditional British food but we ended up eating rice every meal.

I want your company to refund(退还) my money. If you don't reply, I will tell a TV station my story. Please reply by the end of this month.

An angry customer,

22、The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning young people all over the world that they are also at risk from COVID-19. The WHO said young people are not exempt (豁免) from catching the coronavirus (冠状病毒). Many young people mistakenly believe they will not catch the virus. They think it is a disease that only older people catch. The WHO said the truth is that young people are catching the coronavirus and becoming ill or dying from it. It added that young people are also spreading the disease to their parents, grandparents and other people. The White House also urged (力劝) young adults to follow advice and to avoid gathering in large groups to help prevent the spread of the virus.

The Director-General of the WHO said, "Today, I have a message for young people: You are not invincible (无障碍的,不可战胜的)." He added, "This coronavirus could put you in hospital for weeks, or even kill you. Even if you don't get sick, the choices you make about where you go could be the difference between life and death for someone else." The WHO said, "A part of patients treated in hospital for COVID-19 around the world are aged under 50." New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said many young people are not following the state's social-distancing rules. He told young people that, "This is a public health issue (议题) and you cannot be endangering other peoples' health."

23、Manners at table

The customs(习惯)in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host(主人), he will put more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts(使不安)me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to, because it is considered(认为)bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have also noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he often refuses the offer of food or drink though he’s in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again until he accepts your offer.

Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is served with beer(啤酒)by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some juice(果汁)if you have.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States to deal with us, you’d better remember the famous saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

【1】From this passage we can see that the writer is ________.

A.a Chinese

B.a Roman

C.an American

D.a European

【2】When a Chinese host kept putting more food onto the writer’s plate, the writer felt ________.

D.uneasy

【3】In America, people consider it bad manners ________.

A.to refuse an offer

A.not eating up all the food offered

D.asking for things directly if he wants them

【5】“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” means “________.”

A.the Romans are people of good manners

B.Americans always do the same things as the Romans do

C.you should do things like Romans do

D.you should get used to the local customs where you go
