21、A four —wheeled robot, known as Rover, has been tested by a team at Sydney University. It was used to move a herd of cows from a field to a dairy (牛奶场) .
Researchers were amazed at how easily cows accepted the presence of the robot. They were not disturbed by it and the gathering process was calm and effective. Because the robot moved in a steady manner it allowed cows to move at their own speed, which was important in reducing injuries among cattle, said Dr Kendra Kerrisk, dairy researcher and associate professor.
The robot was adapted from one that was already being used to monitor fruit and trees on farms. A team at Sydney University's Centre for Field Robotics improved the robot so that it could be put in a field with cows in order for the researchers to gather data on robot-cow interaction.
The robot needs to be operated by a human now but it's hoped that in the future a version can be developed that will be fully automated (自动化的). As well as gathering cows a new version could also collect information useful for farmers.
Using robots to get cows to the dairy will be better for their well-being. “The research is in its very early stages but robotic technologies certainly have the potential to transform dairy farming,” said Dr. Kerrisk. “When we have discussed this concept with farmers they have been extremely excited and we have had a series of calls and emails asking how they can get hold of one.” she added.
The robot could also cut down the number of accidents involving bumans on farms. Most dairy farmers in Australia use bikes to round up their cattle and they are one of the leading causes of injury. The team hopes that by using the robot to do the job instead, accident rates could fall.
【1】The robot Rover was mainly used to ________ .
A.milk the cows on the field
B.feed the cows with food
C.round up cows on dairy farms
D.take farmers around the farm
【2】Why did the cows accept the robot easily?

22、The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles as the termite mound(白蚁堆).
Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building, which has no air-conditioning and almost no heating. The building—the country’s largest commercial and shopping complex—uses less than 10% of the energy of a conventional building of its size. The Eastgate’s owners saved $3.5 million on a $36 million building because an air-conditioning equipment didn’t have to be imported.
The complex is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glass-roofed atrium(天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through baseboard vents(通风口). As it rises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through forty-eight brick chimneys.
During summer’s cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building, to circulate the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents.
This is all possible only because Harare is 1600 feet above sea level, has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature changes—days as warm as 31℃ commonly drop to 14℃ at night. “You couldn’t do this in New York, with its hot summers and cold winters,” Pearce said.
The engineering firm of Ove Arup & Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23℃ and 25℃, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is fresh—far more so than in air-conditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled.
【1】Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a conventional building?
A. It was designed in a smaller size.
B. No air conditioners were fixed in.
C. Its heating system was less advanced.
D. It used rather different building materials.
【2】What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. Hollow space.
B. Baseboard vent.
C. Fresh air from outside.
D. Heat in the building.
【3】Why would a building like Eastgate Not work efficiently in New York?
A. New York has less clear skies as Harare.
B. Its dampness affects the circulation of air.
C. New York covers a larger area than Harare.
D. Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily.
【4】The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate’s temperature control system_____.
A. works better in hot seasons
B. can recycle up to 30% of the air
C. functions well for most of the year
D. allows a wide range of temperatures
23、A time capsule buried by Apple founder Steve Jobs 30 years ago has been discovered after its location was long forgotten.
In 1983, the young tech innovator was attending a conference in Aspen when he and the group decided to bury as a trick during a design convention. The tube that was filled with an eclectic collection of goods- ranging from the then-new apple mouse to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered the time capsule- was meant to be dug up 20 years later. There was a problem with that plan, however, as everyone involved forgot where it was buried.
The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the National Geographic Channel’s reality show called Diggers. The discovery was well documented and is surely going to be featured on an upcoming episode, and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. CNET reports that in spite of their preparations and clear idea of where the 13-foot-long tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up using heavy machinery.
To anyone removed from the tech industry, the accomplishment in finding the tube appears to be the biggest accomplishment. To others, the most interesting object would likely be the Lisa Mouse placed in the tube by the hands of a then-28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice soled publicly, making it a rarity at the time.
The Aspen Historical Society is going to help the show creators make a list of the tube’s contents-but no word yet whether or not the Diggers cracked open one of the six bottles of Boddington’s Ale that was left inside for the people who found the tube.
【1】Why didn’t people dig up the tube as planned?
A. Because it was difficult to dig it up.
B. Because the tube was too heavy.
C. Because everyone involved forgot where it was buried.
D. Because Steve Jobs died.
【2】What is the meaning of the word "eclectic" in paragraph 2?
A. electronic B. original
C. various D. extreme
【3】Who discovered the time capsule?

A. A time capsule was buried by Apple founder Steve Jobs.
B. A time capsule has been discovered after its location was long forgotten.
C. the accomplishment in finding a tube.
D. the origin of Lisa Mouse.
24、Wikipedia (维基百科) is a non-profit website funded by donations, started on 15th January, 2001. “Wiki” means “quick” in the Hawaiian language. These days, most people go straight to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia (百科), to look something up. But how reliable is it?
The site attracts 78 million visitors every month, and it is available in more than 270 different languages. It’s one of the most comprehensive (综合的) resources available, and it’s got much more information than an ordinary encyclopedia. The site is updated on a daily basis by thousands of people around the world. Anyone with an Internet connection can look through and edit the contents or add a new page at any time. And you don’t need any formal training.
Of course, there are some controls. Wikipedia has a team of more than 1,500 administrators who check for false information. And main targets for horrible comments (such as politicians) are forbidden to public editing. But with more than 16 million articles to keep an eye on, it isn’t easy. So, while Wikipedia benefits from being constantly updated with information from all over the world, it’s also open to “vandals”.
Some of the damage is easy to notice. Someone drew horns and a moustache on Microsoft chairman Bill Gates’ photo. But other things are harder to spot. The most common form of vandalism involves adding tiny items of false information into the biography of a famous person. Unbelievably, some of this misinformation has appeared in newspapers, with The Daily Mail, The Guardian and The Independent all having fallen victim to the tricks. For example, in an obituary (讣告) for British comedian Sir Norman Wisdom, one newspaper claimed that he co-wrote Dame Vera Lynn’s wartime song “There’ll be Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover”. In fact, he did no such thing.
So if you’re going to use any information from Wikipedia, make sure you double-check it first.
【1】 What do we know about Wikipedia?
A. It makes profits from its users.
B. It is run by the Hawaiian government.
C. It is the most popular website worldwide.
D. It provides a huge amount of information.
【2】 The underlined word “vandals” in Paragraph 3 refers to those who _________.
A. take responsibility for something B. get benefits from others

A. some newspapers like The Guardian are irresponsible
B. Wikipedia sometimes contains false information
C. Norman Wisdom is unpopular with some people
D. Wikipedia affects people’s lives greatly
【4】 What does the author advise readers to do?
A. To look through Wikipedia frequently.
B. To update Wikipedia on a daily basis.
C. To turn to other websites for valid information.
D. To be careful when using the information from Wikipedia.
